Pollux is Blogging

We are very happy to announce our own section "Pollux. For Political Science" on the DVPW blog (in German only). Here we regularly report on new offers and developments from the FID Political Science on topics from the fields of literature research, open access, research data management, scholarly communication, and more. We thank the DVPW for this great cooperation!

New at Pollux: Research Blogs

In addition to the classic forms of publication, 350 German and English-language political science blogs can now be found via the Pollux literature search.

Pollux now covers all important forms of scientific publications (cf. Stykow) and our users can thus research well-founded articles on current political and political science topics. The advantage of quickness, however, can also be a disadvantage, since blog publications are generally subject to less careful (or no) review processes. Overall, research blogs are becoming increasingly important in science communication.

The blog selection will be continuously supplemented and adapted. Suggestions for further political science blogs in German and English can be submitted via https://pollux-fid.de/contact or by mail to kontakt@pollux-fid.de.

News from the Scientific Advisory Board

Dr. Simone Burkhart

As a new member of the scientific advisory board we welcome Dr. Simone Burkhart, Deputy Director at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP). Her focus there is science management. A warm welcome! We look forward to working together.

Dr. Burkhart succeeds Prof. Dr. Günther Maihold not only in the SWP, but also in the Pollux Advisory Board.

Günther Maihold was a founding member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Pollux and accompanied the establishment and further development of the FID from the beginning. We have always benefited from his constructive contributions, critical inquiries and his vast experience as a scientist and "science manager" of the SWP. We owe him a lot.

Open Access

SOCIOS Project Launched

The University and City Library of Cologne is developing a digital publishing platform for collaborative writing and open peer review in the social sciences as part of the DFG project SOCIOS

SOCIOS focuses on collaboration and transparency to make the academic publication process more efficient and to establish an open culture of peer feedback. The project will be realized in cooperation with Pollux (FID Political Science) and three other social science subject information services (FID) - FID Criminology, FID Sociology (SocioHub), FID Social and Cultural Anthropology (EVIFA). SOCIOS is expected to go online in the second quarter of 2024. Updates on the project launch will be available via the SOCIOS newsletter - socios-info@uni-koeln.de.

Qualitative Research Data

Since the beginning of the year 2023, we offer a service for archiving and secondary use of qualitative data via Qualiservice. Thus, political scientists can get in touch with Qualiservice even before submitting a project proposal and receive support throughout the entire research cycle. In addition, discipline-specific workshops make research data management issues accessible to a broader audience, such as when dealing with informed consent, anonymization, or making research data visible. Spotlight

E-Books for Pollux PLUS Users. Follow-up

In our last newsletter, we took a close look at the Oxford Research Encyclopedias. This time, we would like to follow up on that by pointing you to our numerous e-books from Routledge. These e-books are available with just one click for Pollux PLUS users via our website.

The spectrum of contents is very broad. Two recent handbooks in the field of security policy might serve as examples: Routledge handbook of maritime security, ed. by Ruxandra-Laura Boşilcă et al. (2022); Routledge Handbook of Arctic Security, ed. by Gunhild Hoogensen Gjørv et al. (2020).

In the field of (feminist) peace and conflict research, the Routledge Handbook of Peacebuilding and Ethnic Conflict edited by Jessica Senehi et al. (2022) or the Routledge Handbook of Feminist Peace Research edited by Tarja Väyrynen et al. (2021) are available, for example.

Also on the topics of (global) environmental and energy politics & sustainable development you will find numerous current e-books from Routledge in Pollux such as: Paul G. Who are the people behind Pollux? In each newsletter, we introduce one person from the Pollux team so that you can get to know us a little better.

Nina Smirnova

I am Nina Smirnova and I am a PhD student at the GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences. I joined Pollux in April 2022. My task area in Pollux mainly includes the expansion of the data collection to different sources and data formats, such as blogs, political science corpora and others. We use different machine learning and NLP techniques to filter data relevant to the Pollux from various huge data collections.

Nina Smirnova

I have a Master of Arts degree in Applied Linguistics from the University of Bonn. My PhD topic mainly concerns unsupervised methods of information extraction from unstructured texts. This means that patterns are searched for in unlabeled and uncategorized data without human intervention. You can find further background information about my career and research interests on my official GESIS website.

I live in Cologne since December 2022. In my free time, I like snowboarding, hiking and driving a boat. At the same time, I also enjoy non-physical activities, such as reading, theatre, music and cinema.
