Abstract

This paper is about the contemporary Islamic debate on the issue of martyrdom. There is little disagreement about the existence of this concept in Islam; both Quranic and Prophetic evidence is in abundance. However, the debate is mostly centred around the question: which noble cause is worthy of self-sacrifice? To some degree the debate has been politicised and different opinions tend to reflect the political trends that exist in the world of Islam in modern days. Mainstream Islamic scholars seem to agree on distinguishing some causes from others; there is little disagreement for instance that self-sacrifice in Palestine is legitimate whereas it is not so elsewhere. At the end of the day it is not ideology that underpins the debate but the socio-political crisis in much of the Muslim world. (Maghreb-Machrek/GIGA)
