Transport systems, the vital arteries of modern societies and economies, shape our world and are shaped by it. The subject of this volume is the dynamic interactions between transport and the physical, economic, and human geographies it weaves through. Transport plays a central role in economic development and growth. It profoundly affects the socio-economic characteristics and spatial form of urban centres and rural areas alike. A new transport link can bring increases in population, in employment, in industrial activity, in wealth. In turn, these changes can lead to demands for further transport improvements. All these factors are explored in the section on Transport and Spatial Form. Sections on Land-use/Transportation Modelling and Data then discuss how to obtain appropriate data and model these transport-geographic phenomena. The past decade has seen substantial research efforts devoted to improving transport modelling techniques, and the state of the art is described here. GIS and GPS are powerful technologies with a wide range of potential applications in this field, in which great advances have been made in recent years.Each therefore has a whole section devoted to it, both to established applications and to those yet to be fully exploited. While all these and the section on Network Analysis may be regarded as core areas, topics on the frontiers are also covered in this comprehensive volume, with sections on Spatial Cognition, GeoSimulation, and Time Use. Each chapter was specially commissioned from an acknowledged world expert on its topic. Each offers an overview and useful insights to those familiar with the area as well as those new to it. Systematic and thorough in its creation, current and accessible in its content, and authoritative and international in its authorship, the "Handbook of Transport Geography and Spatial Systems" will be the definitive reference work on this important subject.

Peculiarities of life, military, the diplomatic activity of Doctor of Sciences in Geography, O. I. Stepaniv, as well as her scientific achievements as a Ukrainian geographer and geologist, are revealed. Olena Stepanov was the first woman in Ukraine and the world – a military officer in the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen (Ukrainski Sichovi Striltsi, USS) and the Ukrainian Galician Army (Ukrainska Halytska Armiia, UHA) during the First World War and the Ukrainian Liberation War of 1917–1921, a diplomatic official of the Western Ukrainian People's Republic and the Ukrainian People's Republic. Having a doctorate in geography and history, she made a significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian geographical science, including economic and social geography, as well as transport geography and modern understanding of geologistics. The last two areas of geographical science are most fully disclosed in her work "Modern Lviv", which provides a comprehensive description of the transport infrastructure of Lviv and Lviv region and its importance in the transport system of Ukraine, in particular, emphasizes the central position of Lviv as a transport and logistics hub on the trans-European way connecting the Baltic and Black Seas; identified the main transport routes of Lviv region, important on a national scale; in addition to the main roads, regional and local ones were identified and characterized. The characteristics of transport routes were combined with the indication of the most significant industrial enterprises of Lviv region; tourist and recreational areas and centres which were located on the ways of transport routes were indicated, as well as the tourist specialization of these centres (in textbooks on the geography of transport of the Soviet era, it was not mentioned at all); such transport and logistics indicators as road congestion, traffic intensity on them were used, as well as their historical names were given and their significance in the past was revealed. Der weltweite Luftverkehr ist derzeit deutlichen Nachfrageschwankungen unterworfen. Die bodenseitige Infrastruktur erlebt jedoch einen enormen Boom - gerade in Deutschland. Es zeichnet sich ab, dass sich die Zahl der für den Betrieb von Großflugzeugen geeigneten und genutzten deutschen Flughäfen verdoppeln wird. "Neue" Flughäfen hat es in den letzten Jahrzehnten immer wieder gegeben. Meist fand ein Ausbau bestehender kleinerer Flugplätze statt, die sich dann zu einem kleineren nationalen oder sogar internationalen Verkehrsflughafen mit Linien- und Charterverkehr entwickelten. Seit etwa 1990 hat sich eine ungekannte Dynamik bei Planung, Ausbau, Neubau oder Konversion von Flughäfen gezeigt. Die atemberaubende Geschwindigkeit der Prozesse wirft aus geographischer Sicht viele Fragen auf. Die breite regionale Streuung würde bei erfolgreicher Durchführung der Projekte zu einer nie geahnten Dichte von Flughäfen in Deutschland führen. Dies lässt schon heute das allgemeine politische und planerische Ziel der Nachhaltigkeit in weite Ferne rücken. Das Resultat nicht nur die bekannten ökologischen und sozialen Probleme des Luftverkehrs. In der Summe zeichnet sich auch eine ökonomische Schieflage ab. Diese ist wegen der in der Regel hohen öffentlichen Subventionen besonders brisant. Durch die parallele Entwicklung der neuen Standorte wird den einzelnen Projektträgern, Flughafengesellschaften, Investoren oder den Gebietskörperschaften diese Gefahr kaum bewusst. Mit viel Zweckoptimismus wird an den Erfolg des eigenen Projekts geglaubt und an den positivsten Prognosen festgehalten. Dass es vielfach zu einer starken Überschneidung der Einzugsbereiche kommen wird, ist kaum bedacht worden. Die zahlreicher werdenden Flugbewegungen von Low-Cost-Airlines spiegeln an kleinen, aufstrebenden Standorten vermeintlich ökonomische Erfolge wider. Sie täuschen aber über die langfristigen ökonomischen Chancen der großen Zahl von Nachahmern hinweg. Das sichtbare Resultat sind massiv subventionierte, aber ungenutzte Flughäfen.

O.I. Stepaniv's scientific works on transport geography are of direct importance to the most modern EU project in the field of transport and logistics – the Three Seas Initiative (TSI). The recent TSI Summit in Tallinn (October 19–20, 2020) highlighted the impact of the TSI on the entire Baltic-Adriatic Black Sea region. TSI is open to countries – strategic partners of the EU, including Ukraine. Although the latter is not a member of the EU, it was invited to the first TSI summit in 2016 andis currently an active participant in many projects under this Initiative, without having formal membership in the TSI. Ukraine should continue to cooperate with TSI, especially with Poland, in such important infrastructure projects as the Gdansk-Odesa highway, the railway Viking project, the development of gas infrastructure within the North-South corridor (involving Ukrainian underground storage facilities of "blue fuel"), etc. ; Розкрито особливості життя, військової, дипломатичної діяльності доктора географії О. Олена Степанів була першою в Україні та світі жінкою – військовим офіцером в Українському січовому стрілецтві та Українській галицькій армії під час Першої світової війни й Українських визвольних змагань 1917–1921 рр., дипломатичним працівником ЗУНР та УНР. Наукові праці О. І. Степанів зберігають свою актуальність і нині. Це стосується не тільки проблем географії транспортної комунікації сучасного Львова, а й актуальних питань міжнародної логістики, зокрема участі України в системі Балто-Чорноморської транспортно-логістичної інтеграції. Науковий доробок О. І. Степанів з географії транспорту має безпосереднє значення і для сучасного проєкту ЄС у транспортно-логістичній сфері – «Ініціативи Тримор'я» (ІТМ). Нещодавній саміт ІТМ у Таллінні (19–20 жовтня 2020 р.) підкреслив вплив ІТМ на весь балтійсько-адріатично-чорноморський регіон. ІТМ відкрита для країн – стратегічних партнерів ЄС, у т. ч. для України. Хоча остання не є членом ЄС, але вона булла запрошена на перший саміт ІТМ у 2016 р., і нині, не маючи офіційного членства в Тримор'ї, є активним учасником багатьох проєктів, що реалізуються в межах цієї ініціативи. Україні варто і надалі співпрацювати з ІТМ, передусім із Польщею, у таких важливих інфраструктурних проєктах, як автомагістраль Гданськ–Одеса, залізничне сполучення в межах проєкту «Вікінг», розвиток газової інфраструктури в межах коридору «Північ–Південь» (із залученням українських підземних сховищ блакитного палива) тощо.

The goal of this special issue is to argue for decolonial perspectives on urban transport and to begin exploring them empirically. The point of departure for this endeavour is our observation that northern thinking continues to underpin transport geography, limiting the development of the academic field as well as opportunities for locally-derived innovation in diverse localities across the global south and north.
