Using the non-Western society of South Korea, the author sets out to assess two major theories of social movements - economic strain and political process theories. His findings of time series analyses show the superior explanatory power of political process theory over economic strain perspectives. The author stresses that the overall changing political milieu has stronger explanatory power than the workers' perception of economic hardships. (DÜI-Sen)
