Three years into the protracted Eurocrisis "all choices are ugly," as former British prime minister Tony Blair comments. Indeed, the high cost of bad options is prompting some to question whether Europe is worth saving the euro.Along with Tony Blair, the former Italian prime minister Romano Prodi as well as two of the best financial minds around—Nouriel Roubini and Mohamed el‐Erian—warn of the dire consequences of a euro breakup. One of France's most prominent philosophers, André Glucksmann, wonders whether the idea of a united Europe—a reaction to the horrors of World War II—can hold everyone together in the future when peace is the norm.

The implosion of 2006-2010 causes a singular debate that tends to exclude every philosophical and historical perspective; it calls for experts and experts only, rendering the discussion purely operational and pragmatic. In a philosophical essay the author states that the temptations of new style nihilism that is post-modern and based on performance (nothing is bad, try everything) haunt the emerging countries as well as the 'old' powers, overshadowing their financial adventuring as well as their socio-political wandering. (ICF2)

Andre Glucksmann views Vladimir Putin's "reign" as the continuation of a Russian tradition that dates back to Peter the Great. This tradition consists in drawing inspiration from the West when it comes to technology, but without importing its social democratic model. For nearly 300 years, successive Russian regimes have all been marked by an authoritarian attitude that disdains the basic rights of citizens, coupled with real military & economic power. Although Russia is not today a true economic power, it nevertheless harbors tremendous natural resources & has a terrifying nuclear arsenal, including weapons that it readily offers to the highest bidder. In other words, Russia's ability to cause harm is significant enough to encourage Western leaders to bow before the master of the Kremlin. This being the case, why should he hesitate to massacre Chechens & move his pawns forward throughout the former Soviet empire? Adapted from the source document.
