Industrial relations : conflict or bargaining ?
In spite of institutionalized bargaining systems, strikes have not vanished. This raises the problem of how to understand the meaning of strike in relation to négociation. Here, the author shows how smaller firms enter into a bargaining process — under workers pressure — more rapidly than larger ones. Also how this pressure must he higher (length of the strike and proportion of workers involved in the conflict) in larger firms if conflict should lead to négociation and agreement. The study is based on quantitative data about conflict in french industry registered by the Ministry of Labour. These results are rather surprising as the larger firms are generally known for their highly developped bargaining system. Thus, the author is supporting the thesis of prevailing conflict over bargaining.
