Der Autor, ein in Gambia seit 1996 lebender und als Lehrer arbeitender Nigerianer, macht sich Gedanken, wie die wirtschaftliche Malaise überwunden werden könnte. Mit der Vision von Präsident Jammeh über die Entwicklung des Landes hätten einige Gambier Probleme, nicht zuletzt, weil Mittel zur Entwicklungsfinanzierung praktisch nicht verfügbar seien. Schuldenaufnahme sei allerdings kein Ausweg, schon gar nicht von IWF oder Weltbank. Wirtschaftskriminalität, lamentiert der Autor, sei ein Problem. Die Diskriminierungen gegenüber Ausländern, namentlich Westafrikanern, seien vielfältig und sollten abgebaut werden. Dies könne dem Land einen wirtschaftlichen Schub bringen. Auch eine gemeinsame Währung, wie sie die ECOWAS beabsichtigt, könnte helfen. How does one think about the form of the State in its management of conflicting ethnic groups in positive light in Africa in the present and in the future? Ethnic reality in Africa continues to be the principal determining factor of individual and collective existence, constituting an obstacle to the normal operation of its States, which often fail or collapse. In the global era, the re-organisation of power and of thought in plural societies leads to socio-political and geopolitical stabilisation. The author here argues for the implementation of 'deliberative democracy' or 'governance under the tree' as a synthesis of liberal and republican democracy based on the 'win-win' principle, different from majoritarian democracy where the 'winner takes all'. The theory of the multinational state thus proposes a constitutional, political and conceptual innovation in the plural societies of the 21st century: it entails restructuring the imagination to allow a global shift in African political thought, its needs, desires, quests, expectations and hopes.

"West African Soldiers in Britain's Colonial Army, 1860-1960 explores the history of Britain's West African colonial army based in Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone and the Gambia placing it within a broader social context and emphasizing, as far as possible, the experience of the ordinary soldier. The aim is not to describe the many battles and campaigns fought by this force but to look at the development of the West African colonial army as an institution over the course of about a century. In pursuing this goal, it is sometimes useful to employ the lens of military culture defined differently by scholars but essentially meaning a set of shared ideas and behaviors that inform daily life in the military. While other locally recruited colonial militaries in Africa have attracted considerable attention from historians as they served as an essential pillar supporting European rule, this book represents the first comprehensive scholarly study of Britain's West African army which was the largest such British-led force south of the Sahara. The study is based on extensive archival research conducted in nine archives located in five countries"--
