In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), caterpillars provide up to 40% of all animal protein consumed and contributes to addressing the problems of food insecurity and poverty in the country. A great proportion of western part population of the DRC consumes caterpillars on a daily basis in their feeding habits. In this region of the country, the edible caterpillar called Mikombidila is also consumed by the inhabitants and are highly appreciated for its excellent taste. Nevertheless, this species is only available in small quantities. This species naturally feeds on a semi-recumbent annual grassy plant with ascending or erect stems up to 60 cm high, called Boerhavia diffusa L., belonging to the Nyctaginaceae family. Research on this caterpillar species is almost non-existent. Very few authors have described its life cycle. After rearing them under laboratory conditions, an identification of the adults has been carried out. This identification indicates that individuals belong to the Noctuidae family and Agaristinae subfamily and represents potentially the Aegocera rectilinea Boisduval 1836 species. The preliminary data on the biology of this species obtained at the end of the observation phase are as follows: it is a multivoltine species with a developmental cycle of ≈30 days (egg incubation ≈ 3 days, larval development ≈ 15 days, pupation ≈ 12 days) and an adult life span of≈ 6 days. Therefore, furthers studies are currently under process to characterize precisely its life cycle parameters and feeding preferences in order to set up a efficient and inexpensive breeding system for a rural and sustainable exploitation of the Mikombidila caterpillar in DRC. ; Peer reviewed
Bruchus rufimanus Boheman 1833 (Coleoptera : Chrysomelidae) is a serious pest of Vicia faba L. (Fabaceae) preventing the valuation of crop products due to its post-embryonic development taking place inside forming seeds. However, the European Union, concerned about the sustainable development of its agriculture, promotes V. faba crops for its multiple services provided to cropping systems, and restricts at the same time the use of effective pesticides against B. rufimanus. This suggests the finding of alternative control methods, such as the use of semiochemicals. To date, some volatile organic compounds (VOCs) involved in the field colonization, feeding, mating and oviposition of B. rufimanus, taking place on different parts of V. faba and following its phenological stage, have already been identified. Further studies would, however, provide insight into other pheromonal means of communication that could be implemented in the semiochemical-based management of this pest, such as the assessment of oviposition or aggregation pheromones. Concerning the semiochemical-based control methods, only one study has been trying to implement a mass-trapping method; and no studies investigated other methods, such as the push-pull or attract-and-kill methods, in IPM strategy including new insight into pheromone identification, entomopathogenic agents or specific parasitoids. In this context, preliminary experimentations of entomopathogenic tests and odor samplings for the identification of new pheromones (aggregation or oviposition deterring pheromone) were carried out within the "FEVERPRO project", and could suggest the implementation of innovative control methods of this specific pest in alternative to the use of pesticides. ; Peer reviewed
The geographical distribution, the phenology and the prosperity's level of six Macrophya species living in Belgium and Grand Duchy of Luxembourg are described and discussed. The available data support the hypothesis that M. militaris (KLUG) and M. rufipes (LINNE) are less prosperous actually than before 1950.
; Peer reviewed
Eating edible insects in Republic Democratic of Congo is a tradition for centuries but a lack of knowledge remains about an actualized inventory of species consumed in the country. Moreover, a rigorous taxonomic matching of the used vernacular name of edible insects and a precise characterization of the sector of entomophagy are still needed. According to our studies focused on the city of Kinshasa, 14 edible species were inventoried as regularly consumed. They belong respectively and by degree of importance to the Lepidoptera (46.7%), Isoptera (18.6%), Orthoptera (17.6%), Coleoptera (9.7%) and Hymenoptera (3.7%) orders. Generally 80.0% of the Kinshasa population consumes at least one species of insects 5 days per month. The key peoples in the edible insect sector are mostly women. The incomes generated by this activity contribute to the well being of households, to reduce poverty and food insecurity in the capital Kinshasa. Future studies should focus on sustainable ways of harvesting wild populations, the use of improved conservation practices, the enhancement of cottage industries for farming insects and the development of economically feasible ways of mass-rearing edible species. ; Peer reviewed
The European Food Safety Authority concluded in February 2018 that "most uses of neonicotinoid insecticides represent a risk to wild bees and honeybees". In 2016, the French government passed a law banning the use of the five neonicotinoids previously authorized: clothianidin, imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, acetamiprid and thiacloprid. In the framework of an expert assessment conducted by the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety to identify possible derogations, we performed a thorough assessment of the available alternatives to the five banned neonicotinoids. For each pest targeted by neonicotinoids use, we identified the main alternative pest management methods, which we then ranked for (i) efficacy for controlling the target pest, (ii) applicability (whether directly useable by farmers or in need of further research and development), (iii) durability (risk of resistance in targeted pests), and (iv) practicability (ease of implementation by farmers). We identified 152 authorized uses of neonicotinoids in France, encompassing 120 crops and 279 pest insect species (or genera). An effective alternative to neonicotinoids use was available in 96% of the 2968 case studies analyzed from the literature (single combinations of one alternative pest control method or product×one target crop plant×one target pest insect). The most common alternative to neonicotinoids (89% of cases) was the use of another chemical insecticide (mostly pyrethroids). However, in 78% of cases, at least one non-chemical alternative method could replace neonicotinoids (e.g. microorganisms, semiochemicals or surface coating). The relevance of non-chemical alternatives to neonicotinoids depends on pest feeding habits. Leaf and flower feeders are easier to control with non-chemical methods, whereas wood and root feeders are more difficult to manage by such methods. We also found that further field studies were required for many promising non-chemical methods before their introduction into routine use by farmers. Our findings, transmitted to policymakers, indicate that non-chemical alternatives to neonicotinoids do exist. Furthermore, they highlight the need to promote these methods through regulation and funding, with a view to reducing pesticide use in agricultur ; Peer reviewed
The consumption of Imbrasia obscura (Butler, 1878) has been quoted in a dozen books and papers in five different countries, namely Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola. This study presents, for the first time, information concerning two unknown subjects, the chemical composition and the nutritional value of the species. The chemical composition shows that it is a good source of proteins and lipids with the presence of five essential amino-acids (threonine, tyrosine + phenylalanine, histidine and tryptophan) and important amounts of essential fatty acids. The mineral elements such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and potassium are also present in good amounts. There is little sodium for which human consumption is frequently excessive. The very high proportion of alpha-linoleic acid contributes very significantly to the low ω-6/ω-3 ratio. Consequently, this caterpillar is a food that may be recommended for human consumption. Farming this species could be encouraged because of its high nutritional value and its good commercial potential especially in areas where malnutrition is common. ; Peer reviewed
; Peer reviewed
Agri-environmental measures developed in the south part of Belgium illustrate the willingness of the rural society actors, farmers and political representatives, to manage the crop production in different ways than the conventional methods. More than the reduction of fertilisers and pesticides, the environment management allows to increase the pest biological control naturally occurring in crop fields. In 2002, the effect of an herbaceous flowered strip of 10 meters alongside the field edge was assessed in winter wheat and sugar beet plots. The evolution of Syrphidae populations was determined using water yellow traps placed in a triangle in the herbaceous strips and in the fields at 20 and 50 meters far from the strip. Syrphid density and diversity were discussed in relation to the agronomical interest of the Syrphidae insect family, focusing on the aphidophagous predator taxa. ; Peer reviewed
In order to gain a better understanding of non-agricultural pesticide use and to prepare the legislative and technical dossiers required under the Water Framework Directive, between October 2006 and March 2007, two surveys were conducted of 97 Walloon communes and 65 districts of the Walloon Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MET) (General Directorates for Motorways and Roads and for Waterway Infrastructure). The questionnaire (26 questions on six topics) was sent by e-mail or fax, with a response rate of 60 out of 97 communes and 33 out of 65 districts. This article describes the environmental aspects of the surveys (health-related aspects are the subject of separate article). The surveys have brought to light a number of good practices (including zero pesticides) and a growing awareness of environmental issues among non-agricultural users. However, bad habits, legislation infringements and a failure to follow good plant protection practice are still a problem and pose major environmental risks (in the form of water pollution from pesticides). Information, awareness-raising and training therefore remain a priority for nonagricultural users. ; Peer reviewed
