Abstract
Life Story Work (LSW) is an intervention primarily used with care-experienced young people to help them produce a coherent, co-produced life narrative. The intervention has been in circulation since the 1960s, yet it has still been vastly under-researched. This article examines two models of LSW in circulation in the UK today and concludes that each model has its advantages and limitations. However, more research into the outcomes of LSW is needed. The article offers an autoethnographic case study of the author's own experience of LSW and its potential outcomes to help inspire more researchers examine this vital intervention for a young person's development.

Data collection methods for qualitative research are varied and have a rich history. The Life Story Board (LSB) is a game board-like tool that is used to construct a visual representation of a person's narrative and his/her related context. In our study, we comparatively assessed the LSB as a data elicitation tool for social science research. We reviewed eight Canadian research projects that have used the LSB as data elicitation tool for qualitative research and assessed the LSB on the feasibility of its use, on its effectiveness to elicit information, on aspects that facilitate and/or hinder its use, and how it compares with conventional interview approaches. Our findings suggest that the LSB can be used with study participants of different gender, age, ethnicity, and life circumstances; that it is effective as a data elicitation tool, and that it facilitates engagement with interviewees, without presenting any major hindrances.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore what conversation analysis has to offer when analysing a series of life story interviews aiming to capture how reading and texts are used in a rural working-class man's identity construction.
Design/methodology/approach
The conversation analysis methodology with its explicit focus on embodied social action, activity and conduct in interaction is integrated with a life story approach when analysing and describing the identity constructing processes that take place in life story interview settings.
Findings
Through a close and detailed analysis of the interaction between interviewer and interviewee, and by focusing and highlighting the phenomena and identities that are oriented to in the face-to-face interaction here and now (and in relation to there and then), descriptions of the complex and dynamic identity constructing processes that are set into play in the life story interview are possible.
Research limitations/implications
It is argued that the approach has a lot to offer when approaching life story data, and thus is a method that can increase the transparency in life story interview research.
Originality/value
The paper explores the intersection of what is often seen as diametrically opposed forms of analysis: conversation analysis and narrative inquiry.

Die Studie MainLife – Entwicklung der Lebensgeschichte (quantitativer Teil) wurde von der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main durchgeführt. Im Erhebungszeitraum November 2002 bis Mai 2020 wurden in insgesamt fünf Wellen (I-V) Personen in verschiedenen Alterskohorten in persönlichen Interviews zu ihrer Lebensgeschichte, ihren Motiven und zum Wohlbefinden befragt. Die erste Welle diente der Untersuchung der Entwicklung der Fähigkeit, kohärente Lebensgeschichten zu konstruieren und zu erzählen. In Welle II wurden die neue Alterskohorten hinzugefügt. Welle III diente der Untersuchung der Längsschnittentwicklung der Lebensgeschichte, Welle IV der Untersuchung von Lebensgeschichte und Motiven und Welle V der Untersuchung von Lebensgeschichte und Wohlbefinden.
Der bei GESIS hinterlegte Datensatz enthält quantitative Daten auf der Grundlage von Fragebögen und, in einer späteren Folgeveröffentlichung, auch Codierungen und Bewertungen auf der Grundlage der Erzählungen. Er umfasst fast alle Teilnehmer. Der bei Qualiservice hinterlegte Datensatz (qualitative Daten) enthält die sieben wichtigsten Erinnerungen mit Datumsangaben, Lebenserzählungen, Dauer und Wortanzahl der Lebenserzählungen, zusätzliche Erzählungen aus Welle IV, Alter, Geschlecht, Migrationshintergrund (selbst oder ein Elternteil) und Höhe des höchsten erreichten Bildungsabschlusses.
