Decoding the Disciplines is a process aiming at making accessible to students disciplinary ways of thinking and acting and by that fostering their success in learning. Decoding recognizes that such ways of thinking and acting are often implicit and due to that might function as bottlenecks to students' learning. One focus of the decoding process and quite often of particular interest to people involved is the actual decoding of disciplinary expertise. This contribution describes how the process subsequently can influence teaching and learning in direct and indirect ways.
