The aim of this article is to investigate services sectors' concentration in the European Union based on employment data and to disentangle the sector-specific developments and influential factors over time. We find that only the financial intermediation, retail trade and water transport sectors are subject to an increasing level of concentration over time. Moreover, we can detect a strong specialization tendency in the sectors of tourism and public administration for the Greek economy. Implementing a two-way fixed effects model, we find that knowledge spillovers as well as externalities arising from technological similarities appear to be highly significant in explaining services' concentration patterns for the European Union. Technological differences as a reason for services' concentration only appear to have been important in the period prior to the Single European Market Enactment. Further evidence is found for the relevance of factor intensity in explaining concentration of non-market services.

This paper examines the effects of the transformations and the changing notions of the national and international security, especially by the European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP) in Greek policies. In this frame, it discusses the debate over "new wars", as one that incorporates the rhetoric of globalization, the increasing role of information technologies, as well as the "preemptive wars" as response to "new threats". Furthermore, this paper discusses the development of the ESDP and categorizes different sets of arguments that focus on the relationship between ESPD and the nation state. These sets of arguments refer to the EU as an emerging global superpower, as an agent of governmentality in agendas of "good governance" and "humanitarian intervention", as a response to the decline of nation states in the frame of globalization and also, as a coalition where the nation state remains predominant and operates as a reference level for the EU. As far as Greece is concerned, this paper summarizes its basic foreign policy features, the problem of its high defence expenditure, its participation to several ESDP-institutions, police missions and peace- keeping operations, as well as problems that concern both the EU and Greece as a border and transition country, such as the migration from belligerent countries. ; peer-reviewed

Doing Business was the first global indicator created to measure aspects of regulation that enable or hinder the owners of small and medium-size businesses in starting, operating or expanding their companies. In its annual publication, each economy is represented by its largest business city and compared globally with another one hundred and eighty-seven economies. Doing Business in the European Union 2020 Greece benchmark twenty-four additional cities, capturing regional differences in regulations and their enforcement. This report highlights the divergence in regulatory performance among six Greek cities and suggests ways to bridge the implementation gap and converge toward best regulatory practices in the five areas benchmarked.

Griechenlands neugewählte Regierung unter Kostas Simitis setzt auf Europa. Nur zu gut kann man sich der Zeiten erinnern, da Athen die EU-Partner mit seiner Mazedonienpolitik strapaziert hat. Aus der Sicht des kürzlich verstorbenen Andreas Papandreou empfand sich Griechenland damals als "Fremder unter Partnern". Autorka w artykule poddaje analizie trzy lata rządów lewicowej SYRIZY w Grecji. Omawia podłoże historycznego zwycięstwa partii pod wodzą Aleksisa Tsiprasa w wyborach parlamentarnych w 2015 r. Ponadto analizuje przebieg negocjacji z greckimi wierzycielami dotyczącymi III programu pomocowego. Zwraca też uwagę na konieczność stopniowego odchodzenia od sprzeciwu wobec polityki oszczędności oraz reakcje społeczne na wprowadzane reformy. W końcowej części, autorka pracy wskazuje na bieżące wyzwania rządu greckiego.

This paper attempts to estimate the supply response for wheat production in Greek agriculture. In our analysis we use the rigorous cointegration and the error correction method, as it is superior to the generally used Nerlovian partial-adjustment model. Since wheat is one of the most important commodities in the Greek agriculture, comprising 26 percent of the total cultivated land, the estimation of its price responsiveness is vitally important in supporting agricultural policy decisions. The results of our analysis reveal that there is a long-term stable relationship between the supplied quantity of wheat and real gross revenue of wheat producers, suggesting that in order to raise wheat yield and farmer incomes, considering the European Union agricultural policy, productivity increases play a vital role. The government's policy should therefore be channelled through measures that will encourage productivity increases. ; peer-reviewed

This paper explores the Greek economy since 1974, before and after joining the Economic and Monetary Union and some of the problems that the current global and European debt crises have created to Greek and to all European citizens. A social loss function and a partial equilibrium model are used to determine interdependence and social cost (or benefits) for the country. The most severe problems of Greece are the social chaos, which is increasing every day, due to the current financial crisis and the worst recession since the great depression of 1940s, the economic and political corruption, which are underrated by the officials, and the tremendous uncertainty that the Union has generated to its weak member-nations and their citizens. Europe has a seven thousand years old history, which comes from ancient Greek civilization and is complemented by Christianity. Greece experienced many difficulties, conflicts, and invasions by barbarians and other neighbouring countries, which had and continue to have tremendous negative effects on her economy. But at the same time, many good periods with tremendous contribution to the global scene are recorded. After World War II the nation and citizens enjoyed a huge growth, a stable development, a multiple improvement, and a preservation of their traditional social values. Lately, the European integration, the debt crisis, and the €110 billion loan from the Troika have destroyed the sovereignty of Greece and it is ruling undemocratically an entire continent and Greece, as a member of the EU and EMU. European Union's economic and social policies cannot satisfy the welfare functions for the Europeans, like justice, fairness, allocation, equity, stability, distribution, efficiency, full employment, homogeneity, security, sovereignty, independence, self-sufficiency, certainty, and democracy. Unfortunately, Greece has lost her public and trade policies, which have increased instability and reduced growth and sustainability inside the country. ; peer-reviewed
