Markets abound in media - but a media theory of markets is still emerging. Anthropology offers media archaeologies of markets, and the sociology of markets and finance unravels how contemporary financial markets have witnessed a media technological arms race. Building on such work, this volume brings together key thinkers of economic studies with German media theory, describes the central role of the media specificity of markets in new detail and inflects them in three distinct ways. Nik-Khah and Mirowski show how the denigration of human cognition and the concomitant faith in computation prevalent in contemporary market-design practices rely on neoliberal conceptions of information in markets. Schröter confronts the asymmetries and abstractions that characterize money as a medium and explores the absence of money in media. Beverungen situates these inflections and gathers further elements for a politically and historically attuned media theory of markets concerned with contemporary phenomena such as high-frequency trading and cryptocurrencies.

Since the presidential elections in 2014, Turkish voters abroad have cast their votes in three parliamentary elections, one presidential election, and one referendum. The relatively higher vote share that the Justice and Devel­op­ment Party (AKP) and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan garnered in Ger­many and other European states with large Turkish immigration levels, such as the Netherlands, Belgium, and Austria, has remained a cause for concern to politicians and the public in these countries. Especially in Germany, the dominant premise in the public debate has been that voting in favor of the AKP and Erdoğan is a sign of "loyalty to Turkey" and an absence of a com­mit­ment to democratic values and norms. The broad appeal that the AKP and Erdoğan have among migrants from Turkey and their children has both a material and an emotional basis. Socio-economic changes and perceived improvements in the quality of state insti­tutions, both within Turkey and Germany, seem to have created a positive image of the party. In addition, a strong sense of pride arising out of the perception of a "strong Turkey" under the leadership of President Erdoğan seems to drive electoral support. Finally, a fear of losing social and political gains also facilitates electoral support for the AKP. Given that the interest of the Turkish government in the migrant population is driven by its foreign- and domestic-policy ambitions, it is likely to continue in the future with a strong identitarian focus. Moreover, Turkey's deepening economic crisis is also likely to accentuate the need for economic remittances. It is vitally important to differentiate between the Turkish gov­ernment's systematic efforts to instrumentalize migrants and their foreign-born children toward its domestic- and foreign-policy ends and the demands of migrants for political representation and equal recognition. Es gibt vielfältige Muster von industrieller Einfacharbeit, die auch durch das Geschlechterverhältnis bestimmt sind. In einigen Betrieben werden Frauen in Prozessen der Digitalisierung von Arbeit eher als 'Flexibilitätspotenzial' angesehen. Gleichzeitig gibt es auch positive Entwicklungen, die mit einer Aufwertung der Arbeit von Frauen verbunden sind

Die Prozesse kultureller Transformation in den gegenwärtigen Demokratien lassen sich mit den traditionellen Ansätzen der politischen Kulturforschung, bei denen vor allem politische Präferenzen untersucht werden, nicht mehr adäquat erfassen. Um die Wirksamkeit kultureller Dispositionen der Wahrnehmung und Beurteilung des Politischen sowie politischen Entscheidens und Handelns heute verstehen und analysieren zu können, bedarf es neuer Konzepte. Dieser Band versammelt Beiträge mit Befunden aktueller Forschung zu den politischen Dimensionen von Kultur und den kulturellen Dimensionen von Politik sowie mit innovativen theoretischen, programmatischen und methodischen Ansätzen.

Drei nordrhein-westfälische Kommunen erweiterten im Rahmen eines Projektes des Landschaftsverbandes Rheinland (LVR) ihre Kenntnisse in den Bereichen der wirkungsorientierten Projektplanung und Datenerhebung, mit dem Ziel, diese Kenntnisse im Rahmen der kommunalen Präventionsketten gegen Kinderarmut in ihrer Arbeit umzusetzen. Die vorliegende Studie beschreibt die Implementation in den Kommunen. Ziel ist jedoch nicht die Bewertung oder Beurteilung der jeweiligen Umsetzung, sondern das Verfassen einer aus den Beobachtungen abgeleiteten Einschätzung zu allgemeinen Gelingensprämissen und Herausforderungen von wirkungsorientierter Projektarbeit im Kontext kommunaler, präventiver Jugend- und Familienarbeit. Neben zu erwartenden Gelingensfaktoren, wie etwa ausreichend Personal, fachlicher Qualifikation, Mitwirken der Akteur_innen im Feld und einer guten Einbettung in den behördlichen und kommunalen Gesamtkontext, wurde deutlich, dass vor allem die deskriptive Eingrenzung von Formaten eine wichtige Rolle bei der erfolgreichen Umsetzung wirkungsorientierter Maßnahmen spielt. Hierzu empfiehlt sich das Erstellen einer Wirkungslogik, wobei zu beachten ist, dass die Planung von Wirkungszielen im Kontext Prävention sowie das Erheben von entsprechenden Daten überaus herausfordernd sein können. Darüber hinaus deutete sich an, dass die Wirkungsorientierung als Haltung, aber auch als Methode zur Verbesserung der zielgruppenbedarfsgerechten Maßnahmenplanung und -bewertung den Bereich der Jugendhilfe im kommunalen Kontext noch nicht durchdrungen hat, sodass die Resonanz im System gemessen am Aufwand bisweilen gering ausfällt.

The ousting of Robert Mugabe as Zimbabwe's president took the world by surprise. Over the last twenty-five years, garbage infrastructure in Dakar, Senegal, has taken center stage in the struggles over government, the value of labor, and the dignity of the working poor. Through strikes and public dumping, Dakar's streets have been periodically inundated with household garbage as the city's trash collectors and ordinary residents protest urban austerity. Often drawing on discourses of Islamic piety, garbage activists have provided a powerful language to critique a neoliberal mode of governing-through-disposability and assert rights to fair labor. In Garbage Citizenship Rosalind Fredericks traces Dakar's volatile trash politics to recalibrate how we understand urban infrastructure by emphasizing its material, social, and affective elements. She shows how labor is a key component of infrastructural systems and how Dakar's residents use infrastructures as a vital tool for forging collective identities and mobilizing political action. Fleshing out the materiality of trash and degraded labor, Fredericks illuminates the myriad ways waste can be a potent tool of urban control and rebellion.
