Vor über einhundertdreißig Jahren (am 17. November 1881) wurde mit dem Verlesen der Kaiserlichen Botschaft zur Eröffnung der fünften Sitzungsperiode des Reichstages die Ära der staatlichen Sozialpolitik eingeleitet. Als erstes Land Europas ergriff das Deutsche Reich damit die Initiative zur Errichtung obligatorischer staatlicher Sozialversicherungen Zwei Jahre später wurde das erste Sozialversicherungsgesetz im Reichstag verabschiedet, 1884 trat die obligatorische Krankenversicherung in Kraft. Noch im gleichen Jahrzehnt folgten auch die Unfall- und die Rentenversicherung. Seither haben auch alle anderen Länder Westeuropas staatliche Versicherungen gegen Arbeitsunfälle, Krankheit, Alter und Arbeitslosigkeit geschaffen, die auch gegenwärtig den institutionellen Schwerpunkt des Wohlfahrtsstaates darstellen. Die vorliegende Studie zur historischen Entwicklung der Sozialversicherung in Westeuropa ist im Rahmen des HIWED-Projektes (Historische Indikatoren der Westeuropäischen Demokratien, Projektleiter: Wolfgang Zapf und Peter Flora) entstanden. Dieses Projekt wurde von 1973 bis 1979 von der Stiftung Volkswagenwerk finanziert. Sein wesentliches Produkt ist ein umfassendes Datenhandbuch über politische, gesellschaftliche und wirtschaftliche Entwicklungen in Westeuropa im Zeitraum von 1815 bis 1975. Die Studie von Jens Alber mit komparativen Statistiken zur historischen Entwicklung der Sozialversicherung in westeuropäischen Ländern in historischer Perspektive bildet das neunte Kapitel in dem ersten Band des Datenhandbuchs. Untersucht werden alle Länder Westeuropas außer Griechenland, Portugal und Spanien. Im Vordergrund stehen die quantitative Beschreibung des Wachstums der Sozialausgaben und der Bevölkerungsanteile, die von den sozialen Programmen und Leistungen erfasst werden. Die Datensammlung umfasst Einnahme- und Ausgabendaten der Unfall-, Kranken-, Renten- und Arbeitslosenversicherung für 13 westeuropäische Länder, soweit sie in den nationalen statistischen Jahrbüchern seit Einführung der Programme verfügbar waren. Die Finanzdaten sind nach Ausgabenarten und Einnahmekategorien gegliedert. Als ein Maß für die sozialpolitischen Anstrengungen eines Landes wird in dieser Studie – wie allgemein üblich - die Sozialleistungsquote verwendet. Dabei werden die Sozialausgaben ins Verhältnis zum Sozialprodukt (Bruttoinlandsprodukt) gesetzt ("expenditure ratios"). Schließlich bildet die Darstellung der Entwicklung von Mitgliederdaten (der jeweils erfasste Personenkreis der vier Sozialversicherungen) einen weiteren Datenschwerpunkt.
Neben der Datensammlung publizierte Jens Alber eine makrosoziologische Untersuchung mit Analysen zur Entwicklung der Sozialversicherung in Westeuropa. "Die Beschreibung der zusammengestellten komparativen Daten soll die grundlegenden Gemeinsamkeiten und Variationen der Sozialversicherungsentwicklung in Westeuropa deutlich machen. Die Analysen sollen dann einige der Bedingungsfaktoren der Entstehung und Entwicklung der sozialen Sicherungssysteme aufzeigen, um erklärungskräftige von weniger fruchtbaren sozialwissenschaftlichen Hypothesen zu trennen und zu einer kumulativ fortschreitenden Theoriebildung über den Wohlfahrtsstaat beizutragen. Das erste Kapitel schildert zunächst die Ursprünge der staatlichen Sozialversicherungspolitik und stellt die Entstehung der Sicherungssysteme in den Kontext des gesellschaftlichen Strukturwandels Europas im 19. Jahrhundert. Das zweite Kapitel untersucht, welche sozialwissenschaftlichen Erklärungen der Entstehung und Entwicklung der Systeme bislang verfügbar sind. Ziel dieses Kapitels ist eine Bestandaufnahme der bisherigen sozialwissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse über den Wohlfahrtsstaat, die auf bislang offene Fragen verweist, welche in den Analysen des dritten Kapitels aufgegriffen werden. Die erste Analyse untersucht die zeitlichen Variationen der Einführung der Sozialversicherung. Im Vordergrund steht die Frage, ob die Sozialversicherung primär ein Erfordernis der sozio-ökonomischen Entwicklung darstellte, oder ob sie besser als Produkt politischer Auseinandersetzungen verstanden wird. Die zweite Analyse untersucht die Ausdehnung der westeuropäischen Sozialversicherungssysteme anhand der quantitativen Daten über ihren Mitgliederkreis. Die dritte Analyse hat die institutionelle Entwicklung der Systeme am Beispiel der Arbeitslosenversicherung zum Gegenstand. Das neunte Kapitel des Datenhandbuchs (Jens Alber: Income Maintenance) "… presents data on the development of the major public social programmes. 'Social security' is defined following the practice of the International Labour Office. It embraces the four social insurance schemes (occupational injuries, health, pension, and unemployment insurance), public health, family allowances, social assistance, benefits to war victims, and the special transfers to civil servants. Data on the coverage of the four social insurance schemes are presented for the period from the introduction of a given type of insurance programme to 1975. Data on the expenditure and receipts of social security programmes are reported for the period from 1949 to 1974.
Data are mainly presented country by country, in the form of tables and graphs. The chapter begins, however, with six comparative tables with selected ratios for all 13 countries. The first three of these comparative tables give ratios of various expenditure categories as percentages of gross domestic product (social security expenditure and social insurance and public health expenditure, both including administrative costs; benefit expenditure, excluding these costs for pensions, health, unemployment, and family allowances). The fourth table shows the part taken by public authorities and employers in the financing of social security and the last two of the comparative tables give coverage ratios, i.e. the members of insurance schemes (pension, medical benefit, occupational injuries and unemployment insurance) as a percentage of the labour force.
The comparative part is followed by a series of tables and graphs with the national data on social security expenditure, its financing, and coverage of insurance schemes for each country. The first table gives the aggregate amounts of social security and social insurance expenditure, as well as its breakdown according to major programmes (public assistance, family allowances, public health, and the fur insurance schemes for health, pensions, occupational injuries and unemployment). All figures pertain to net expenditure, excluding transfers among single schemes. They refer either to calendar years or – in the case of Denmark, Ireland and the United Kingdom - to financial years ending in the stated calendar year. Expenditures for the single programmes do not add up to the reported total social security expenditure, because the outlays for a war victims and public employees are not included in the tables. Information on the percentage of total social security benefit expenditure spent for public employees, however, is contained in one of the graphs. Total social insurance expenditure corresponds to the sum of the four reported insurance schemes. The tables on the financing of social security report the receipts for total social security and total social insurance for the period from 1949 to 1974, as well as the receipts for the four major social insurance programmes in selected years. In addition to the aggregate figures, the percentage distribution of receipts by source of contribution is given. The three major sources are: insured persons, employers, and public authorities (summing up contributions by central government, receipts from local government bodies and special taxes allocated to social security). The last category, "other", includes income from capital and contributions classified by the International Labour Office as "other receipts".

SUMMARY:
This is a Russian translation of a few chapters from the book by Jürgen Osterhammel, Transformation of the World: History of the Nineteenth Century (Munich, 2009). He starts with an affirmation of the historical and cultural conditionality of periodizations and of a linear calendar. The author then proceeds with an explication of his understanding of the "nineteenth century": at its core is not a linear chain of developments from A to Z, but ruptures and transformations that are defined by their specific temporal structures yet are nevertheless interconnected. The nineteenth century is thus understood as the simultaneous continuation of transformations of the preceding epoch and the prehistory of "modernity" Therefore, the narrative in Osterhammel's book is structured by a twofold logic: that of a calendar century (1801–1900) and that of a "long nineteenth century," defined as a matrix of interdependences and correlations (approximately 1770 to the early 1920s). Osterhammel comments on the constructed nature of historical "epochs" such as "Hellenism," "the Late Medieval age," or "Early Modern history," yet points to the fact that the nineteenth century escaped this kind of classification. Historically, the year from 1880 to 1881 was experienced as the border of the new century only in Christian regions of the world. "The West" is thus identical to the territories whose population cared about the border of epochs. Osterhammel discusses the Gregorian calendar as the most successful cultural export of Europe of the Modern epoch, and presents a picture of the calendar pluralism that used to characterize the world. He broadens this discussion to include perceptions of historical and social time in different regions of the world. Then he switches to the issue of ruptures as manifested by multiple layers and modes of human existence (economics, politics, private life, intellectual process, etc.) and by different scales of generalization (a national history based on the consensus of major turning points versus European history versus world history). From this perspective, the rupture of the French Revolution cannot serve as a political beginning of the nineteenth century because it would be relevant only for France, Germany, and Haiti. The whole nineteenth century was defined by the failure of Ancient Regimes. In Japan political modernity began only in 1868. Then Osterhammel tests the periodization based on popular and cultural developments and ruptures connected with the concept of "early modern times" (the end of these times is the beginning of the nineteenth century). He admits the Eurocentric nature of the concept of "early modern times," yet points to the historiographic consensus regarding 1450–1600 as the years of "big changes" for most of Eurasia and America (the rise of trade, the introduction of new technologies, the centralization of state and religious disturbances that were not directly connected to European expansion). However, the end of these more or less universal "early modern times" is far from obvious. To deal with this complexity, Osterhammel borrows from Reinhart Koselleck the concept of Sattelzeit , as a long transition from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century (approximately 1770–1830) and divides the nineteenth century into Sattelzeit – Victorian decades – Fin de Siècle . He offers a detailed discussion of the meaning as well as global applicability and limitations of these sub-epochs. He then balances this analysis by turning to microprocesses, insofar as epochal thresholds are created not by some "objective" meanings but by the overlapping of multiple thin time nets. In other words, they are condensations of similar and repetitive changes. To reveal this overlapping, besides a linear concept of time, one also has to allow a nonlinear time (thus resisting a Eurocentric homogenization of historical narratives). A separate chapter in Osterhammel's book deals with different experiences of time characteristic of the nineteenth century and with its unification. He explicates the complex dynamics of the parallel unification and nationalization of time. He positively resolves the question of acceleration as a universal human experience in the nineteenth century, but is more reluctant to recognize the universal nature of the acceleration of historical time (as opposed to personal experiences of speed, movement, etc.).

The second part of the published extract from the book deals with the problem of space and its correlation with time. In spacial terms, the nineteenth century is represented in Osterhammel's chapters through the center–periphery model. The nineteenth century is also discussed as a time of dominance of European geographical knowledge. However, the nineteenth century represented not only the first phase of creation of a scientific geography but also the last phase of the epoch of great discoveries. Osterhammel considers individual and group expeditions of the nineteenth century and the new territories they discovered. He stresses that in the nineteenth century large geographic territories still had rather flexible affiliations, their names and borders were not stable and universally accepted. The metamorphoses of the European semantics of space are illustrated in detail in a special paragraph dedicated to the region that today is known as Eastern Asia or the Far East. The tension between the tendency toward a metageographical simplification and geographical (terminological) sophistication is illustrated by the works of Carl Ritter, Friedrich Ratzel, and Elisée Reclus.

The next level of discussing space is connected with mental geography. Here the major categories under discussion are the "West" as it emerged in the 1890s from the expansion of the transatlantic civilization model, and "Europe" (its center, its civilization borders and open frontiers, etc.). Next Osterhammel discusses the spacial Chinese mentality of the same period. Later in the text he turns to another dimension of space – space as a contact arena, a zone of interactions. Among such zones he treats the Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean; the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans; and continental spaces. Osterhammel also raises the issue of power and space and focuses on states' efforts to rationalize and order spaces. He claims that this is usually, but not necessarily, the prerogative of modern states. This thesis is tested by three cases: that of China, the United States, and Russia.

Finally, Osterhammel discusses issues of territoriality, diaspora, and borders. These issues are also connected with the role of the state in the nineteenth century. The imagined ideal state territory was large and contiguous. This contradicted the actual discontinuity of the social space – the fullest expression of which Osterhammel finds in diasporas. He concludes that the collecting of national spaces under one power and the formation of emotional attachment to one territory was accompanied by the emergence of transnational spaces that were marked by less intensive yet still quite visible territoriality. Borders are included in this picture as enabling multiple understandings of territoriality. Osterhammel shows that linear borders (instead of frontier zones) were not invented in the nineteenth century and that linear state borders were not an invention of European imperialism introduced to the non-European world. Yet the spread of semiotically marked, fortified linear borders became the main tendency of territoriality of power in the nineteenth century, when control over a country became more important than control over people.

Wie gezeigt werden konnte, wurden die westlichen Maltechniken in der ersten Phase der wirtschaftlichen Kontaktaufnahmen für die Vorbereitung der Kolonisation eingesetzt. Die Portugiesen hatten auf der Suche nach neuen Gebieten, durch deren Kolonisation und Ausbeutung sie versuchten, ihre im Zusammenbruch befindliche Vormachtstellung in Europa zu retten, im Jahr 1543 Japan entdeckt, das sich in der Endphase eines hundertjährigen Krieges (sengoku jidai) befand und ausgezehrt war. Mittels Akkomodation, profitablen Handelsangeboten, Waffenlieferungen und freundschaftlichen Kontaktangeboten verschafften sich die Eroberer schnell Zutritt zum Gebiet um Nagasaki, dessen Bevölkerung, die Europa nicht kannte, sie für chinesische Händler und Mönche hielt, die willkommene Angebote und Hilfestellungen boten. Die Ähnlichkeit der europäischen christlichen Bilder (seiga) mit einheimischen Themen bewirkte eine schnelle Akzeptanz der Fremden und ihrer Religion im ausgebluteten Land, zumal sie sich anschickten, das Land beim Aufbau zu unterstützen. Da sie ausSüdasien gekommen waren und bärtigen Randvölkern ähnlich sahen, nannte man sie "Südbarbaren" (nanbanjin). Die Absichten der Eroberer blieben unerkannt, und während das Land sich unter Toyotomi Hideyoshi, der die Landesvereinigung durchführte und von den Handelskontakten (nanbanbôeki) profitierte, allmählich erholte, versuchten die Eroberer es gezielt durch den Aufbau von Kirchen, Krankenhäusern und Unterrichtsstätten unter Kontrolle zu bekommen. An den Schulen wurden neben Religions- und Sprachunterricht auch Kulturtechniken gelehrt: Einheimische Maler der Kanô-Schule hielten auf Stellschirmen die Begegnungen mit den Eroberern fest, die sich als potente Handelspartner und Religionsstifter gaben, in Wirklichkeit jedoch den in Indien bereits etablierten kolonialen Lebensstil auch in Japan, das als Teilgebiet der "Ordensprovinz Indien und Japan" eingestuft wurde, aufbauten. An den Kollegien lehrte man die Ölmalerei; mittels Vorlagen, die abzumalen waren, vermittelten die Eroberer ihre Heimat gezielt als reich, paradiesisch und militärisch machtvoll, doch wurde von den Malern auch die um 1590 erreichte begüterte Situation der Fremden vor Ort festgehalten: Denn nach rund 40 Jahren war das avisierte portugiesische Handelsmonopol etabliert; die Europäisierung, religiöse und kulturelle Überfrachtung während des Nanbanbooms befand sich auf ihrem Höhepunkt; damit stand man kurz vor dem erhofften Übergriff. In dieser Phase stand die Dynastie der Aviz und damit das Monopol in Übersee kurz vor dem Zusammenbruch; dieser wurde 1596 durch den Vertrag von Greenwich besiegelt. Mit zunehmender Erkenntnis der Gefahr, die von den vermeintlichen Händlern und Religionsstiftern ausging, wurden 164 Extegrationsmaßnahmen ergriffen, die im vollständigen Landesabschluß (sakoku seisaku) des Jahres 1639 gipfelten. In der zweiten Phase der wirtschaftlichen Kontaktaufnahmen wurden die westlichen Malund Zeichentechniken in Japan für den Erwerb naturwissenschaftlicher praktischer Fertigkeiten benötigt. In Europa rissen nach der Zerstörung des portugiesischen Monopols die schnell zum Firmengiganten VOC zusammengeschlossenen niederländischen Kaufleute den Überseehandel monopolistisch an sich und traten die Nachfolge der Kolonialherren an. Die japanische Niederlassung der VOC wurde im Zuge der Landesabschlußmaßnahmen auf eine Insel vor Nagasaki ausgelagert. Die Tokugawa- Regierung, die nach dem Tod des Landesvereinigers Toyotomi Hideyoshi die Macht an sich gerissen hatte, bemühte sich neben profitablen Handelsmanövern von Anfang an um den Erwerb medizinischer Kenntnisse, die man durch gezielte Kontaktaufnahmen mit den Betriebsärzten der Niederländer ab 1649 gewann; früheste Lehraufzeichnungen entstanden bereits 1661, im Umkreis des Aufenthaltes Engelbert Kaempfers wurden um 1700 auch Lehrsituationen bildlich dokumentiert. Ein nach Japan verbrachtes chirurgisches Lehrbuch des Ambroise Paré wurde 1706 übersetzt, es stellt die erste theoretische Grundlage der japanischen Medizin in westlicher Manier lange vor der Herstellung des ersten Anatomiebuches Japans. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt lehnte man das definitiv empirische und praktische Vorgehen noch aus religiösen und kulturellen Gründen ab, dies bezog sich auch auf den Einsatz realistischer Maltechniken für die Herstellung von medizinischem Abbildungsmaterial. Als sich ernsthafte Versorgungsschwierigkeiten im autarken Staatsgebiet einstellten und die Gefahr erneuter Konfrontationen mit Fremden wuchs, wurde im Zuge großflächiger Reformen ab 1716 (Kyôhô-kaikaku) auch die Forschergruppe der "Niederlandforscher" (Rangakusha) aufgebaut, die sich mit der Erarbeitung europäischer Naturwissenschaftstechniken befaßte, obgleich diese die heimische Ethik und das kulturelle Selbstverständnis verletzten. Der gezieltere Erwerb der realistischen Maltechniken zu Dokumentationszwecken wurde nun unumgänglich. Durch die Aufhebung des Bücherimportverbots 1720 kamen immer wieder europäische naturwissenschaftliche Lehrwerke, darunter unterschiedliche Anatomiebücher, ins Land. Ein Lehrbuch der Malerei von De Lairesse und weiterhin Zeichnungen von Dürer vermittelten Grundlagen realistischer Darstellungsweisen, die benötigt wurden, um neben der Herstellung perfekter Kopien europäischer Vorlagen auch eigene praktische Forschungen in den Gebieten Kartographie, Astronomie, katasteramtliche Dokumentation, Biologie, Zoologie, Pharmazie und insbesondere Medizin zu dokumentieren.Nebenbei 165 wurden authentische Darstellungen der Lebensrealität der Niederländer auf der Insel hergestellt. Nachdem trotz größter ethischer Barrieren der unumgängliche praktische Schritt in die empirische medizinische Tätigkeit durch eine Obduktion 1771 getätigt war, wurden die daraus gewonnenen Erkenntnisse im 1774 erschienenen ersten Anatomiebuch Japans (kaitai shinsho) veröffentlicht. Dieses 5-bändige Werk enthielt neben perfekten Kopien europäischer Bildvorlagen auch erstmalig eigene Zeichnungen vom Präparat, die der Maler Odano Naotake anfertigte. Er ging damit noch in der japanischen Edo-Zeit und lange vor der gezielten Verwestlichung Japans, die auch die Integration der praktischen europäischen Medizin vorsah, einen Schritt, den in ähnlicher Weise Leonardo da Vinci gegangen war. Kawahara Keiga fertigte die erste topographische Karte Japans. In der dritten Phase der Kontaktaufnahmen wurde die westliche realistische Mal- und Zeichentechnik beim Aufbau eines westkompatiblen Industrie- und Rüstungsstaates eingesetzt. Die erzwungene Öffnung Japans 1853 für die westlichen Staaten, die den ungeschützten neuen Markt an sich reißen wollten, führte zu sofortigen Maßnahmen: 1855 wurden Schußwaffenfabriken gebaut und ein Amt für Westforschungen eingerichtet. Um diese Zeit und während der Hafenöffnungen (kaikoku) 1854/58 hielten Künstler der Utagawa-Schule die militärische Macht, die technischen Möglichkeiten der amerikanischen Kriegsschiffe und das selbstgefällige Verhalten der Fremden auf Drucken fest. Ab 1856 übernahm der "Pionier der Westmalerei der Moderne"(Harada Minoru), Kawakami Tôgai, im Westforschungsinstitut den Bereich Zeichnung. Ab 1861 bemühte er sich im "Amt für Malereiforschung" (gagakukyoku) um die realistische Öltechnik: Beide Techniken wurden für kartographische Zwecke und den Bau militärischer Einrichtungen benötigt. Kawakami unterrichtete und koordinierte die Nachfolgergenerationen. Die Meiji-Restauration (meiji-isshin) 1868 beendete das Tokugawa-Regime, Kaiser Meiji proklamierte das Ziel des modernen Staates: Das Land sollte vollständig umstrukturiert werden; Ziel war der Aufbau eines reichen Rüstungs- und Industriestaates (fukokukyôhei), der den Konkurrenzkampf mit den westlichen Staaten aufnehmen und die Unabhängigkeit des Landes erhalten sollte. Daraufhin wurde die Industrialisierung nach europäischem Vorbild, ab 1876 die kulturelle Umerziehung, d.h. die Europäisierung der Bevölkerung (ôkaseisaku) eingeleitet. In dieser Zeit wurden europäische Frauen und die Landwirtschaft mittels der Öltechnik positiv vermittelt. Zwei Ministerien koordinierten den Aufbau der Infrastrukturen, der industriellen Grundlagen und der zukünftigen Exportindustriezweige Seide und Baumwolle, die Finanzierung des Aufbaus und die Maßnahmen zur 166 Produktionssteigerung (shokusankôgyô). Die Masse der Bauern wurde mittels einer Landsteuerreform (chisokaisei) als finanzielle Grundlage des Staates festgelegt und durch im voraus fixierte Steuereinnahmen vollständig ausgenutzt. Die Bauerntöchter arbeiteten bereits ab 1872 zu Dumpinglöhnen in den schnell hochgezogenen staatlichen Fabriken. Sofort entbrannte ein Bürgerkrieg, der das Land in eine prowestliche und in eine traditionalistische Fraktion spaltete. Ab 1876 kam es zu wiederholten Bauernaufständen, die durch unterschiedliche Maßnahmen, die in das Parasitäre Gutsherrentum (kisei jinushisei) mündeten, unterbunden wurden. Propagandistische Malerei wurde den Entwicklungen im Land entsprechend hergestellt: Der äußerst prowestlich eingestellte Maler Goseda unterstützte den Kaiser im Bürgerkrieg durch Propagandamalereien. Das Leben der gezielt ausgenutzten Bauernschicht wurde von kaisertreuen Malern bis zum Zeitpunkt wirtschaftlicher Kompatibilität idyllisch propagiert. Nur ein Westmaler wagte um 1870 Bilder mit antiwestlichem Inhalt. Der englische Journalist und Zeichenlehrer Charles Wirgman deutete die Situation der Bauern an. An der 1876 eingerichteten "Kunstschule für das Ingenieurwesen" unterrichtete der italienische Professor für Landschaftsmalerei, Antonio Fontanesi. Dort erhielten viele Westmaler ihre Ausbildung, die westliche Zeichentechnik wurde für die Infrastrukturierung, insbesondere den Eisenbahnbau in Zusammenarbeit mit Ingenieuren benötigt. Das Tôkaidô-Hauptnetz war 1889 gelegt. Der Nachfolger des Beamten Kawakami am Amt für Malereiforschung (gagakukyoku), Koyama Shotarô, arbeitete ebenfalls an militärischen Einrichtungen. Dort unterrichtete er die Herstellung von Skizzen. Ab 1880 und in der Zeit der finanziellen Schwächung der Regierung durch Bürgerkrieg und Bauernrevolten, setzte man die Öltechnik für die Verherrlichung der ersten Ingenieursleistungen ein: Der "Erste Ölmaler Japans" (Harada Hikaru), Takahashi Yuichi, ebenfalls Schüler des Beamten Kawakami Tôgai, glorifizierte unterschiedliche Ingenieursbauten und weiterhin die Ergebnisse des Mishima-Straßenbauprojekts, das deutlich die Übernahme europäischer urbaner Strukturen zeigt. Dabei stellte er die japanische Bautradition nur noch als schmückendes Beiwerk dar. Dennoch wurde seine persönliche Begeisterung und Bestrebung, die Westmalerei als kulturelles Gut zu etablieren (Kunstausstellungen, Museen), von der Regierung, welche die Aufgaben der Öltechnik eindeutig festlegte, abgelehnt. Alle Bereiche, auch kulturelle, dienten einzig der Industrialisierung; dies betraf nicht nur die Nutzung der realistischen Westtechniken für Aufbau- und Propagandazwecke, sondern auch die Förderung des Traditionskunsthandwerks für den Verkauf auf Weltausstellungen. Zeitgleich wurde Europa propagandistisch positiv vermittelt, dies unterstützte den Verwestlichungskurs auf 167 wirtschaftlicher und sozialer Ebene. In einem Punkt jedoch setzte Yamamoto nach 10 Jahren eine erste Grenze: Er vermittelte die moralische Einstellung der Europäerin und kritisierte damit die Verwestlichung in Bezug auf die Rolle der Japanerin, ein Punkt, der den Rüstungskurs nicht gefährdete. Mit Schritt in die wirtschaftliche Kompatibilität änderte sich die Propaganda: Harada Naojirô vermittelte nun, im Jahr 1886, die männliche Bevölkerung des wirtschaftlichen Konkurrenzgebietes Europa als geschwächt und krank. Zugleich griffen er und andere prowestliche Maler innere Gegner an, die den Rüstungskurs, dem auch die kulturelle Umerziehung diente, blockierten: 1890 griff die prowestliche Regierung auf einer Industriemesse mit einem Bild Harada Naojirôs die Traditionalisten durch religiöse Tabuverletzungen an und bekundete damit ihre Macht. Ein ähnliches Ziel verfolgten auch die Mitglieder des Meiji-Kunstvereins, die in der Tradition der Malerei als Fotografieersatz standen: Sie griffen das Traditionsmonopol der Ablehnung der realistischen Malweisen an; unter dem Label einer "didaktischen Westmalerei" wurden traditionelle Themen mittels realistischer Darstellungsweisen korrumpiert. Damit drang der Verwestlichungskurs zum Zeitpunkt erster Erfolge als westkompatibler, d.h. kolonisationsfähiger Industriestaat bis in die kulturellen Tiefen des Landes vor. In dieser ersten Hälfte der Industriellen Revolution (ab 1890), die in Japan für die Zeit der bereits aufgebauten Fundamente und frühe Kolonisationen steht, transferierte Kuroda Seiki, der "Vater der modernen japanischen Westmalerei" (Harada Minoru, Miwa Hideo ), den Malstil des französischen Lehrers Raphaël Collin als repräsentativ für Europa nach Japan. Sein Abschlußwerk, das im Salon geehrt wurde, eine Aktmalerei, diskreditierte, im Taiwanjahr 1895 auf einer Industriemesse gezeigt, die Europäerin moralisch. Zugleich demonstrierte man damit die Macht der Industrie über innere Gegner, die versuchten, die als anstößig empfundene Aktmalerei in Japan zu verbieten. Auch auf privater Ebene trieb Kuroda die Verwestlichung voran: 1896 gründete er den Schimmelverein (hakubakai), in dem freiheitliche Prinzipien des französischen Realismus auf Japan übertragen wurden. Zugleich wurde auch auf die Forderungen des Takahashi Yuichi reagiert, der die Westmalerei als Möglichkeit betrachtete, weltweit über die Entwicklungen in Japan zu informieren. In diesem Verein thematisierten Westmaler die Realität der ausgebeuteten Bauern, erste Ergebnisse der Industrialisierung und den Nationalstolz, Themen, die direkt Bezug auf die Fakten nahmen. Mit Erreichen des technischen Rüstungsstandards der westlichen Länder im Jahr 1900, internationaler Konkurrenzfähigkeit im Jahr 1903 und im Vorfeld weiterer Kriege und Kolonisierungen wurde 1903 der Pazifik-Kunstverein gegründet. Gründer Mitsutani, Schüler des Koyama, arbeitete in dessen Tradition und malte kriegspropagandistische Bilder. Zugleich diskreditierte Gründer Nakamura 1903 168 nicht nur den Westen durch eine exakte Aktmalerei, sondern deutete auch die durch die Verwestlichung möglicherweise schon zerstörte moralische Einstellung der Japanerin an. Japan verdrängte zwischen 1905 und 1908 die internationalen Marktführer des Seidenhandels. In dieser Phase, als die zu Beginn festgelegten Ziele eines reichen, militärisch starken Staates (fukokukyôhei und shokusankôgyô) erreicht waren, wurde die Westtechnik, die am Aufbau des Staates beteiligt gewesen war, im Jahr 1907 als gleichberechtigte Kulturtechnik neben die einheimische Kulturtechnik Nihonga gestellt. Damit avancierte sie zum kulturellen Symbol der erfolgreichen japanischen Industrialisierung nach westlichem Vorbild, die als Selbstschutzmaßnahme nach der Demütigung des Jahres 1853 eingeleitet worden war. Zum Zeitpunkt des Schritts in den japanischen Imperialismus, der keine inneren Streitigkeiten mehr tolerierte, bekundeten die Westmaler der einstigen ausschließlich prowestlichen Fraktion, daß sie auf der Seite der Traditionalisten standen: Die traditionelle Rolle der Japanerin sollte erhalten bleiben. Mit dieser Botschaft und durch die Nebeneinanderstellung beider Kulturtechniken schlugen sie gezielt den Weg der Harmonisierung ein, um das Land für die vordringlichen politischen, außenpolitischen und wirtschaftlichen Ziele zu vereinen. Auf den ab 1907 abgehaltenen kultusministeriellen Ausstellungen (Bunten) wurden, in der Endphase der Industriellen Revolution und auf dem Weg in den japanischen Imperialismus, Bilder prämiert, welche die Arbeit allgemein und die Arbeit in der Rüstungsindustrie thematisierten. Die durch den Eisenbahnboom erwerbslos gewordene Masse der Rikschafahrer, von Kriegspropagandist und Pazifik- Kunstvereinsgründer Mitsutani in ihrer aktuellen Armut drastisch dargestellt, war prädestiniert für den Einsatz in der Rüstungsindustrie. Auch damit knüpfte man an die von dem ersten Ölmaler Japans, Takahashi Yuichi, geäußerte Aussage an, die Malerei müsse Staat und Regierung dienen.

A Spontaneous Healing Process of Corti's Organ Following Noise Exposure Tae Yong Moon Department of Medical Science The Graduate School, yonsei University (Directed by Professor In Yong Park, M.D.) Noise-induced hearing loss was recognized as an occupational hazard for military service-men, hunters, factory employees and others exposed to loud noises, as early as the 1880s by Gottstein and Kaiser(1881) and Holt(1883). In the Past several decades, many researchers have focused attention on this problem in view of the increase of noise in the environment and its possible deleterious effects on the hearing organ. Therefore, tremendous studies have been done in many ways, including morphological, audiological, and biochemical approaches. However, several Questions still remain to be answered, including those related to: (1) mechanism(s) involved in the damage to the hearing organ caused by various noises, (2)the healing process of the hearing organ after noise trauma, (3) more accurate damage risk criteria, (4) discrepancies between histopathological changes and deteriorations of function, and (5) treatment of noise-induced hearing loss. The purposes of this study are to describe the timed sequence of morphological change occuring in the organ of Corti following exposure to one particular stimulus, and to identify the source of the cells which form the epithelial scar in the organ of Corti and the manner in which this scarring occurs. Materials and Methods As experimental animals, thirty-two adults cats, showing a positive preyer reflex and weighing 2�댘3 kg, were used. Twenty-eight of the cats were divided into 7 groups of 4 each, according to the timed sequences following the exposure to a specific loud noise and 4 cats were used as controls. Animals were exposed to the narrow-band noisy of 1KHz at the level of 110 dB SPL for 5 hours continuously. One group each of the cats was sacrificed 1 hour, 3 hours, 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 14 days, and 30 days following the exposure to the noise. The temporal bones were removed, and the cochleas were processed for light and electron microscopic(scanning and transmission) examinatons as follows : 1. Intracardial perfusion with 2.5% glutaraldehyde fixative was performed under the general anesthesia and transtrmpanic fixation was also done through the round window. 2. Temporal boners used for light and transmission electron microscopic examinations were decalcified with 4.5% EDTA and 2.5% glutaraldehyde solution. 3. Temporal boners used for electron microscopic study were refined with 1.33% osmium tetroxide solution. 4. The cochleas were dissected in 70% ethanol and further processed for the scanning and transmission electron microscopic studies. Reaults and Conclusions 1. The outer hair cells were the first targets of damage following the exposure to the noire and showed the most severe morphological changes. 2. A few cochleas showed the holes in the reticular lamina of the outer hair cells 1�댘3 hours after exposure to the noise. 3. Various changes in the OHC-stereocilia were noticed 1�댘3 hours after the exposure to the noise including the followings : (1) loss of rigidity(floppiness), (2) fracture of their neck portions, (3) fusion of cilia, (4) partial loss of cilia, (5) belb formation of their apical ends, and (6) partial defeats of their plasma membranes and disarray of the actin-filament arrangement. 4. Conglomerations of lysosomes and degenerative changes of mitochondria were observed in the subcuticular regions of the OHCs. 5. One to three hours after the exposure to the noise, the OHCs showed a partial loss of their plasma membranes and some cell membranes appeared to have stretched. However, neural synapses appeared to be normal. 6. One to three days after the exposure to the noise, the extent of OHCs lesions was greater. However, the holes which had appeared in the reticular lamina of the OHCs were found to be sealed. 7. Changes similar to those which were observed in the OHCs 1�댘3 hours after the exposure to the noise were noticed in the IHCs 1 to 3 days after the exposure to the noise and the supporting cells also showed signs of damage at this time. 8. The degeneration and the healing process, in the OHCs, the IHCs, and the supporting cel1s(in that order) of the organ of Corti, were nearly completed 7�댘14 days after the exposure to the noise. 9. The healing or the organ of Corti became complete 30 days after the exposure to the noise. Nevertheless, a few stereocilia remained damaged(fusion, giant cilia, and partial loss)at this time. 10. The sites of cell-lose lesions were sealed by the hypertrophr and the migration of the supporting cello which remained, surrounding them. The results of the above investigation suggest that there are several mechanisms causing injury to the organ of Corti, depending on the Bites damaged and the timed sequence after the exposure to the noise such as mechanical injury, vascular disturbances, ionic changes, metabolic exhaustion. In addition, the mechanism involved in the further degeneration of Corti's organ 1�댘3 days after the exposure to the noisy was probably the ionic contamination of the cortilymph through the reticular lamina of the OHCs and the effects of lysosomal enzymes produced by the hair-cells degeneration. The present results also suggest that if drugs to promote the hypertrophy of the supporting cells could be developed, they would quite possibly be helpful in healing the injured organ of Corti. ; restriction

Es soll der räumliche und zeitliche Ablauf der tiefgreifenden Umgestaltung von Holzkohlen- zu den Steinkohlentechniken in Belgien, Frankreich und Deutschland beschrieben und erklärt sowie die außenwirtschaftlichen Verflechtungen dargelegt werden.
Hierfür werden die Außenhandelsstatistiken herangezogen.
Der Autor analysiert lange Reihen zur Eisenproduktion, zu Eisenexporten und -importen und den Preis- und Kostenniveaus verschiedener Länder und Regionen. Auf internationaler Ebene zeigen die Außenhandelsströme einen wichtigen Kanal zur Verbreitung der neuen Eisentechniken auf. Darüber hinaus wird durch die Analyse der politischen Entscheidungen einzelner Länder deutlich, wie staatliches Handeln (Zoll- und Eisenbahnpolitik) Bedingungen setzte, die den Entwicklungsablauf der Eisenindustrie beeinflussten.

Die Studie von Rainer Fremdling gliedert sich nach einzelnen Ländern, und hier wiederum mit einer durchgehenden Zweiteilung in die Zeit vor und nach dem Eisenbahnbau etwa um 1835 – der Eisenbahnbau in Europa bildet die Zäsur zwischen der Anbahnung und Durchsetzung der modernen Eisentechniken.

He read it exactly the way I wrote it for him. No thank you, I do appreciate it. Can you hear me okay? I've got more wires on me than the last time I had a test at McKay Dee Hospital let me tell you and if things start going off you'll know I'm in real trouble here today. Let me repeat something I said a little bit earlier, you don't know how pleased I am to be one of this years Utah International Fellows. It's been a marvelous experience for me to be involved in the research on a most interesting individual and I won't do that individual even remotely justice today, but will just touch the surface. As part of that process I have had the pleasure of having two fellows to assist me in research. Stan said earlier that we were both spoiled by this to have someone to actually find things, and keep us on track, and catch an error occasionally. I really appreciate those two fellows. Brett Peterson is one of my fellows. Brett has graduated from Weber and gone on to law school. My other fellow Marci Farr is with us today and Marci stand up. I appreciated everything Marci did to help and again keeping on track and it's been a great experience. My paper today is entitled Thomas D. Dee: Founder, Pioneer and Public Servant. In Ogden Utah on July 12th 1905 grocers and butchers closed their shops, school children lined city streets, public officials turned away from their duties and hundreds of prominent and ordinary citizens gathered at the Ogden Tabernacle. On the diocese were Utah Governor John C. Cutler and LDS Church President Joseph F. Smith who had traveled north to speak at the funeral of a man the Ogden Standard called, " The city's foremost citizen," Thomas 2 Duncombe Dee. As the paper reported that day, no other man in Ogden was identified with so many and diverse enterprises as he. Indeed in a career spanning fifty- five years, Dee lead in business, church, education, political and governmental affairs. During his life time Dee accomplished many things. He was a devoted husband and family man, the father of eight children. He was a friend, business partner and political ally of David Eccles and the two men along with several other created, organized and expanded a wide range of commercial ventures. Simultaneously, Dee pursued a career in politics as an office holder and judge. He chaired the Ogden Board of Education, served in a variety of capacities in his local ward. And as the twentieth century began Dee became the first president of the Utah Construction Company which sprouted from humble root and flowered into international prominence. Today it is my challenge and opportunity to address the many facets in the life of this important Ogden figure. While time will not permit an in depth examination of each aspect, I purpose to survey the breath of his career and hopefully down the line will be able to explore the many strands in detail. To begin let us examine Thomas D. Dee's roots and the series of event that in 1860 brought him to Ogden. Two important facts lead our inquiry. First the history of the Dee family is deeply rooted in the soil of Wales, and second, the family was part of what William Mulder has called " a unique element in the total stream on American migration," the relocation of thousands of Mormon converts to their Zion in western America's Great Basin. Thomas Duncombe Dee was born on November 10, 1844 in Llanelly South Wales, the second son and third 3 child of Thomas Hill and Elizabeth Reese Dee. We know very little of Thomas and Elizabeth's early lives, but they seemed typical of many citizens of nineteenth century Great Britain who faced a hard scrabble existence. We do know that the young couple, both age twenty- five married in 1837. Thomas Hill Dee sought work where ever he could find it practicing the trades of potter, gardener, plate maker and likely others. The couple moved frequently, no doubt in search of economic opportunity and their first two children Annie and James were born in Staffordshire England. At some point prior to young Tom's birth in 1844 the family returned to Wales where the couple's last child, Elizabeth, was born in 1851. Six years later in July 1857 the Dees made a decision which would alter and shape their lives and those of their decedents. When they joined the American based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints and became part of that intense conversion period sweeping the British Isles between 1837 and 1870. Not long after their baptism Thomas and Elizabeth decided to come to America. Apparently Tom's parents and siblings were baptized into their new faith earlier than he. As church records indicate he was baptized and confirmed just a few days prior to leaving England. His daughter Maud records that family lore held that " young Tom would stay at home reading and studying while the other attended church services. In the end," Maud added, " he was a better Mormon than any of them, because he understood what he believed." Many English Latter- day Saints during that time drew upon the church's Perpetual Emigrating Fund, the PEF, to provide the necessary financial 4 assistance to make the trip. From 1850 to 1887 that fund brought some 30,000 converts to America in the eighteenth century, including the family of David Eccles. The system allowed them to repay their loan over time through their labor once they had settled here in Utah. While some sources indicate that the Dees came with the help of PEF British mission records housed at the LDS Church Archives do not support this claim. It is possible that they may have received some assistance from some local church members in Wales or that the PEF aided them later in their journey. The Dee family left Liverpool on March 30th 1860 aboard the Underrider. Carrying as many provisions as possible or required by law, and paying the fare of some twenty- four English pounds. The ships manifest lists Thomas Hill Dee as a potter, Elizabeth as his wife, James as a plasterer and Tom as a joiner. Annie just barely twenty is listed as a spinster, tough crowd. A local band serenaded the departing vessel as the 600 passengers from Wales, England and Switzerland left port. The group was under the leadership of James D. Ross who was returning from his second mission to England and his counselors James Taylor, who will marry into the family, and John Croft. The Underrider arrived in New York on May 1st. During the voyage according to the Mormon publication the Millennial Star, " there were four deaths and four marriages and upon their arrival the health of the saints was generally good." Two days later the Dees set out for their destination of Florence, Nebraska not far from Omaha. From there the saints prepared for the final leg of their journey to the Great Basin. The company of 240, including both British and Swiss 5 immigrants as well as some U. S. citizens, left Florence on June 17th 1860, again under the leadership of James D. Ross. According to Church records the Dees were among those traveling on a church wagon train as opposed to a hand cart which the church was discontinuing during that period of time. The Ross Train arrived in the Salt Lake Valley three months later on September 3rd 1860. Unfortunately fifteen year old Tom kept no journal describing his trip across the plains. We do have however the reminiscence of Charles W. Nibley an eleven year old member of the same party. Nibley would immerge as an important church leader and business man and in later years a very close friend and business associate of Tom Dee's. Nibley recalled, quoting from his reminiscences, " The journey across the plains was of the usual ox team kind. There was little of special note that transpired. We traveled about ninety miles a week, which was an average of fifteen miles a day for six days a week. No traveling was done on the Sabbath. Of course there are inconveniences and more or less hardships in that mode of travel but I was a child and do not remember the hardship, on the contrary," he said, " I rather enjoyed the whole trip." In his reminiscences which were complied while Nibley was in his mid- 80' s he still vividly recalled walking barefoot across the plains sighting herds of buffalo and feasting as he says on their sweet meat. He also remembered the circling of the wagons, unrolling and rolling the bed rolls, and the Indians who were plentiful and sometimes he said " a little troublesome although we never had any conflict whatever with them." 6 No doubt Tom Dee shared similar memories of that trip, including the journeys end. The party camped near Parley's Summit and were greeted by Apostles George A. Smith, Wilford Woodruff, Lorenzo Snow and other leading brethren. The next Nibley recalled, " We came out of the canyon and on to the bench near Fort Douglas, and I could very well remember with what joy and pleasure each one of our company looked upon the growing city in the wilderness. We felt that all of our troubles and trial were practically at an end when, as a matter of fact, they had only just begun. The immigrants camped near what is presently the Salt Lake City and County Building then prepared to either stay there in Salt Lake City or move to one of the other outposts along the Mormon corridor. The Nibley family like the Dees headed north past the Great Salt Lake, which he noted " was very low that year." The wagon road from Salt Lake City lay considerably west of any green fields, right out in the alkali lake bottoms, as dry as a bone. While Nibely admitted he had no recollection of Ogden the Dees stopped to make their home. Tom Dee would spend the rest of his life here. Another aspect of the journey westward bears noting. About the time the Ross train made its final preparations for its final trip to Utah, another English convert, John Taylor, arrived at winter quarters with his wife Ann Faulkner Taylor, their two children and John's two daughters nine year old Mary and seven year old Annie, born to his first deceased wife Ann Standard. It is not clear whether Tom Dee and Annie Taylor met at this time. Annie records however that her train discovered a bleached buffalo skull which read, " Captain Ross Train passed here 7 July 15th. All is well." As we will see the paths of these two young people will definitely cross in the future. After getting settled Tom worked as a carpenter at times along with his brother in law James Taylor. He had learned carpentry skills as an apprentice in Wales and as noted he was listed on the Underrider's manifest as a joiner. Over time Dee became a successful building contractor as well, constructing both residential and commercial structures. Hard working and ingenious the young man began to make a mark in his community, but Tom Dees mind was not only on work. Tom had lived in Utah for a decade or so before he seriously considered Annie Taylor as a possible spouse. The two had met from time to time and according to some accounts at one family gathering Tom told the young Annie he was " gonna wait for you to grow up and then I'm gonna marry you." The Dee and Taylor families were close in part because as noted not long after their arrival in Utah Tom's sister Annie Dee had married James Taylor, Annie Taylor's uncle. Now gets a little confusing here, okay. Annie Dee Taylor and Annie Taylor Dee, hang with me here. In any event their courtship evidentially became serious around 1868 or so. In her charming book Memories of a Pioneer, Annie wrote that as a young girl she went to a Washington's Birthday dance in Salt Lake City where the dashing officers from Fort Douglass and their ladies added to the beautiful atmosphere. Tom Dee escorted Annie to this memorable party clad in his territorial militia uniform. Annie also recalled another Salt Lake event in January of 1870 celebrating a branch of the railroad from Ogden Tom and his mother 8 were in attendance. Annie remembered " Thanks to complimentary tickets from the railroad." At the conclusion of the celebration Annie and her sister rode the train to Ogden stayed a few days with the Dees and then returned to their Salt Lake home. The railroad she said, " Made people nearer neighbors." Reading between the lines, perhaps the railroad also facilitated a budding romance for on January 15th Thomas D. Dee wrote Annie's father John Taylor to request Annie's hand in marriage. We have this delightful letter and the reply to it in our Dee family collection here in the library and it's displayed in the back just for today. It goes back into the archives after today, in that cabinet back there. Tom wrote, " It has been known to you that for some time your daughter Annie and myself have been corresponding with each other, and that I have made occasional visits to her; well such things generally lead to something more important, and the object of this letter is to ask your consent for us to get married." Tom said that he didn't need to add more but hoped your favorable consideration. Actually I think it was the uniform. A few days later the perspective bridegroom had his answer when John Taylor replied that he could " find no reason why I should not give my consent to her to becoming your wife." Taylor told his future son in law he wished Annie to have a husband of her own choice, a man she could honor and respect. Therefore he wrote, " You have my permission and are at liberty to make your own arrangements." The marriage was performed on April 10, 1871 in a ceremony in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City when Brigham Young's counselor Neil H. Wells united twenty- six year old Thomas D. Dee and eighteen 9 year old Annie Taylor in marriage. The young couple then traveled to and settled in a two room adobe house on 22nd street, their home for the next decade. Over time as the family grew they need more space and relocated in Annie's word, " Out in the country" in a home near today's 8th street and Washington Boulevard. Even though he was working hard to support his family Tom Dee also took an interest in Ogden's civic affairs. Between 1879 and 1893 he served as assessor, alderman, Justice of the Peace, constable, and city councilman sometimes simultaneously. He became a municipal judge and thus was often referred to as Judge Dee. As his good friend Warren L. Wattis observed, " Dee served as a judged in the early days when the position had perplexities then financial rewards. He first allied with the Mormon controlled People's Party, but when politics was Americanized in the 1890' s Dee became a democrat. His daughter Maud called him, " a good democrat who discussed the Democratic Party as though it were a religion;" long time ago. During his adult life Tom Dee was an active and faithful Latter- day Saint. He spent more then thirty years serving as superintendent of the Sunday school in two different wards, but his efforts were not limited to Sunday alone. In June 1881, for example, Superintendent Dee led the saints of Ogden's third ward on a pleasant excursion to Lake Shore. The Ogden Standard reported that on the breezy shore of the Great Salt Lake ward members quote, " spent a most agreeable day sporting in the saline billows and on the grounds which have been much improved and embellished. Dancing was indulged in with vim, Watkins' band furnishing the musical accompaniment. The sports were diversified; 10 bathing, boat sailing, rifle shooting, swinging, etc," must have had a different meaning then. " And the pleasant party returned home in excellent spirits." In November of 1881 the Dee family relocated to the Mount Fort ward. Where Tom continued his service the Sunday school and later as a councilor to his brother in law Bishop James Taylor. His removal from the third ward was a sad day for ward members as a result they issued an elaborate framed scroll headed conomorea, and it too it to is displayed right here and if you have a chance I encourage you to take a look at it. It's really amazing. Dee was also active as a Weber Stake home missionary and as a high priest. As one considers Dees commitment to the Mormon faith, two questions arise. First it is interesting that he never served as a full time missionary a common occurrence for faithful men of the time. More importantly at a time when Latter- day Saint men were encouraged to take additional wives, some say as a sign of solidarity, Tom remained monogamous. This seems more than happenstance for Annie's father had three wives, including sisters he'd married after his first died. Tom's good friend David Eccles had entered into the principle as did many other local men. But it never seemed to have been on Tom's agenda. In any event Dee's commitment to the faith was never in doubt. Over time this friend David Eccles became a central figure in Tom Dee's professional life. It is not exactly clear when the two men first met. An article in the Deseret News implies that they became business partners as early as 1876, but other sources differ on that date. It is possible that the two men met around 1882 as Tom was leaving Ogden's third ward and David was moving in. Ogden 11 wasn't a huge town in those days, with a population of some 6,000 or so they may have known each other from a number of activities. They clearly known to each other by 1885 however, as both had served as Ogden alderman, Dee representing the fourth ward, Eccles representing the third. Business easily trumps civic service however as the many Dee- Eccles partnerships took shape. As Bertha Eccles later recalled, " Judge Dee occupied the closest association with David Eccles, More so that any other one." Initially their partnership evolved around lumbering, a natural for Dee as a carpenter and contractor. Overtime their business association broadened. A couple of things should be taken into account considering Dee's role in these business activities. First as vice president of Ogden's First National Bank he played a central role in the financing of many of these ventures. Second as I've examined the scope of Dee's business involvements I concur with the observation again from his good friend Warren Wattis, " No detail was too trivial, no task was too large to receive his personal attention." While it would be impossible to even list the many Eccles- Dee partnerships, not to mention others that involved Dee alone or with other partners, let me highlight just a few. One of the most important involved the Utah Canning Company. Organized by Isaac M. Pierce in 1888, the company grew steadily for several years but then went into bankruptcy in the recession of the mid- 1890' s as I think Tom mentioned earlier today was probably the second most severe depression in American history. Lots of people lost everything as a result. Toward the end of the decade in 1897, a group led by Eccles and Dee bring in a capital outlay of 12 $ 12,000 purchased the property and equipment and built a better facility and operated the company under the same name. Dee served as president of the reorganized company until his death eight years later. The company marketed its products under a number of brand names. One of the most prominent was Peirce's with red, blue and gold striped cans containing tomatoes, and catsup, and juice, and vegetables. But Utah Canning was perhaps best known for Peirce's Pork and Beans, sometimes called the daddy of them all. The company was also known for its rolly polly peas and temple brand tomatoes. At the same time Dee and Eccles also consolidated their holding in sugar, along with several other church and business leaders they created the Ogden Sugar Company on December 6th 1897 at a meeting held at the Weber County Courthouse. Upon the motion of H. H. Spencer, Dee was elected to chair this organizing meeting and later became the company's vice president. Additionally these men along with other created Logan Sugar and Lewiston Sugar Companies between 1897 and 1901. In 1902 the various companies were combined into Amalgamated Sugar. At that point the company produced 60,000 100 pound bags annually, while returning attractive dividends to investors. In 1900 Eccles and Dee formed the Ogden Rapid Transit Company, purchasing the Ogden Electric Railway Company which had gone into receivership. Under their control the company pushed ahead with a program of repair and modernization. Over the years this successful company expanded and improved the city street railways and extended service beyond the city itself. 13 For most of us here today however, it is Dee's involvement in Utah Construction that is of particular interest. He was the company's first president, a major shareholder and as the minutes demonstrate actively involved in company affairs. Moreover as Gene Sessions and Sterling Sessions write the immergence of Utah Construction brought Dee and Eccles into direct partnership with the Wattis brothers and marked the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship that would stretch across generations. Company records and other sources also reveal Dee's important relationship with all three brothers that stretch well beyond business to real friendship as well. While pursuing a successful business and political career Dee was also interested in improving the educational climate of his home town. Even though his own formal education was limited ranging from six week to two years depending on which source you consult, his daughter Maud noted that, " he was really an educated man because he was dedicated to self improvement and study. He loved literature, especially the classics and devoured good books." Not surprisingly he took an active role in developing a public library system here in Ogden. More over Tom Dee became the father of public education in this town, serving as a member of Ogden's school boards for thirty- five years. In 1890 Ogden schools were consolidated by the Utah Legislature into one district. Dee became a member of that first board and served as president of the board at the time of his death. It is also clear that Tom Dee was very popular with Ogden residence because of his efforts to further education. In fact as the Ogden Herald noted, " As Dee faced reelection to the board in November 1904 14 though a democrat, he would have gained the endorsement of Ogden republicans if the call from their convention had not distinctly specified that a republican candidate must be nominated." He won. As the Utah State Journal observed, " Dee always took a deep interest in educational matters, giving freely of his time and means to promote the welfare of public schools and his unselfish devotion to this great cause is at the root of the high standard of excellence of Ogden's schools." But Thomas D. Dee's life was not all work. Despite his many business, civic, political, and church responsibilities along with an abiding commitment to family he also really enjoyed life. His daughter Maud often describes him as " often buoyantly happy and a wonderful mixture of down right practical and idealistic. Though he could be a stern disciplinarian he delighted in his children and encouraged them in their pursuits." " He was," Maud admitted, " Not much of a dancer, but he danced just the same. Not much of a singer, but he sang just the same." And Dee played and loved to watch baseball. What more needs to be said? Despite this zest for living, Dee's life was not free of sadness and pain. Both of his parents died reasonably young, and he out lived his three siblings including his Elizabeth who died at the age of fifteen and the loss of his oldest child and his name sake Thomas Reese Dee who died in his early twenty's was devastating. Perhaps these sorrows these personal sorrows not only redoubled his efforts to uplift his family, but to improve Ogden as well. But his commitment to all of these concerns came to an abrupt end in July of 1905. While we do not 15 have any documentation to support it, one suspects that Tom, Annie and the children joined with other residence to observe that years July 4th celebrations according to the Ogden Standard, " the day broke clear and fine with scarcely a cloud in the sky and early parties could be seen working their way toward the canyon or boarding the street cars for a trip to the country," that would be the Dee- Eccles street cars you understand. Perhaps the Dees joined the largely attended celebration of Lester Park, which featured patriotic speeches and songs. If Tom picked up the Standard he would have seen and likely been offended by accounts of a meeting of radical unionist in Chicago, they had drafted a document favoring the general strike as the only means by which the working class could displace the capitalist class. He may have seen an account in the standard reporting the Western Pacific was considering dropping making Salt Lake City the eastern terminus of the railroad they projected building from Oakland to Oroville California and then east across Nevada. Perhaps in favor of Ogden, at least the paper reported the prospect of Ogden securing the road seemed brighter. Ultimately the Feather River route that we've talked about today became a major project that put the Utah Construction Company on the map as builders of western railroads. We do know that on Wednesday July 5th Dee along with H. H. Spencer and Mathew S. Browning took the latter's car to South Fork Canyon near Huntsville to look for additional sources of water for the growing city. As historians F. Ross Peterson and Bob Parson write, " As Ogden grew it suffered numerous epidemics of contagious disease and often people blamed the water 16 supply." In late 1879 the city council located a small reservoir on the bench to collect water from the springs there. A year later they constructed a reservoir on 24th street to collect more spring water. Pipes conveyed these waters to businesses along Washington Boulevard. In 1881 the Ogden Water Company controlled by the city piped water from Ogden Canyon to the city. Ogden's council bought out the water company in 1884 and then bought water rights to the streams coming from Strong and Waterfall Canyons east of the city. The fact that Dee and his colleagues were searching for additional water sources is understandable. For Dee had been interested in the question for many years. As early as 1881 he was nominated by Mayor Lester J. Herrick as a capable person to sit on the board of the Ogden Water Company and the council concurred. In 1900 the Ogden City council again called upon him to serve with a number of prominent citizens to advise them in matter of purchasing or building water works in Ogden City. Ultimately in October of that year, Dee was part of a group headed by David Eccles that purchased the financially strapped Ogden Water Works Company for an amount that would be paid in bonds of a reorganized company and ultimately the water works would be sold by Eccles to the city in 1908. Unfortunately Dee's commitment to Ogden indirectly led to his untimely death. A decade later Warren L. Wattis remembered the circumstances, " while undertaking assignment made for him, by him for the up building of Ogden," he wrote, " Dee slipped into a stream and contracted a sever cold. Initially Dee's condition did not seem grave and in fact his illness was not generally know, by 17 Friday July 7th however, when it became obvious that he was to ill to attend a regularly scheduled meeting of the board of education people were concerned. And in fact Dee's condition became the sole topic of conversation amongst the cities businessmen." In the early morning hours of July 9th surrounded by his wife and children, his physicians Edward M. Conroy, and Dr. Chester E. Coulter and two long time business associates H. H. Rolapt and C. C. Richards, Thomas D. Dee in Warren Wattis' words in the home he had builded with pride passed into the silent shadows of the dreamless sleep." Once the news of Dee's death was made public Ogden's citizens mourned as one. The funeral was held on July12th, using the words of Warren Wattis, " The mourners were of all creeds and conditions. The rich and the poor, the young and the old, the learned and the unlearned, the high and the humble, all united to do him honor." As mentioned, eulogies were given by Utah's Governor Cutler and LDS Church President Joseph F. Smith and others. The pallbearers included several of Dee's business associates, David Eccles, H. H. Spencer, C. W. Nibley, W. H. Wattis, and Neil Flygare. For Eccles Dee's death closed an important era of friendship and business success. In his taciturn way Eccles recorded the death in his day book for July 9th, simply noting, " Judge Dee died 1: 15 a. m." But the depths of his feelings were revealed in a death notice sent out by the First National Bank, " In the death of Mr. Dee this community suffers and almost irreparable loss." Dee's unexpected death also shook the leadership of companies like the Utah Construction Company and Amalgamated Sugar. 18 A special meeting of Utah Construction's board of director was held on August 7th 1905 at request of vice president W. H. Wattis to make an official announcement of Dee's death and to elect a successor. Adam Patterson was unanimously elected a member of the board and David Eccles upon the motion of James Pingree was elect president and he would direct the company until his own sudden death in 1912. At the same meeting W. H. Wattis suggested that a committee be appointed to draw resolution to respect to the memory of the late Judge Dee. Composed of Eccles, Joseph Clark and Warren L. Wattis the committee drafted a resolution to be embodied as part of the meeting and transmitted to the Dee family. It said in part that the company directors deplored the untimely death of their late president and cherishes his worthy of constant emulation. His ideals of personal and business honor, his unswerving loyalty to every trust and business obligation imposed upon him as an officer. And that they recognized the splendid ability and loyalty which he brought to the affairs of Utah Construction Company as important elements in the company's success. The resolution was signed by Warren L. Wattis and W. H. Wattis as secretary and vice president respectively. A month later a sadden board now under the direction of David Eccles met to approve the minutes and resolution of respect and to move on with company business, particularly the construction of that Feather River Route. Similar sentiments are found in the minutes of Amalgamated Sugar. This time Joseph F. Smith announced that, " On the ninth day of July A. D. it pleased providence to remove from our midst the honorable Thomas D. Dee." Smith 19 noted that, " The board had learned to appreciate and respect Judge Dee because of his many attributes and his decisive methods. He was an excellent supervisor of corporate interest because of his clear, just and impartial judgment. He was a distinctive conservative mind, building successfully where others hesitated or failed. He was a desirable associate because of his loveable and cheerful disposition. He was an esteemed citizen because of his broad mindedness and his devotion to his fellows and the interest in developing the country's resources." Smith went on to say that, " Dee's devotion to his wife and children had become proverbial among all who knew him and as a Christian his love for his neighbor was limited only by the universe." A committee consisting of H. H. Rollap, Fred Keisel, Adam Patterson, Joseph Howell and H. H. Spencer was appointed to deliver the resolution to the family. Stockholders Mathew S. Browning and W. H. Wattis were appointed to the board of directors to replace Dee as well as his long time friend Charles W. Nibley, who had resigned his post previously. H. H. Spencer who had moved to elect Dee chair at the company's original organizing meeting that I mentioned and recommended that he be his first vice president was selected to replace Dee himself as vice president. These appointments constituted the only items of business conducted at the meeting. Thomas D. Dee's tragic and untimely death did not forever end his impact on the Ogden community. In the years since his family has expanded on his commitment through a wide range of civic and philanthropic activities. Here in the Stewart Library we are particularly proud of our Thomas Dee reading room which is behind you. The Dee Events center, the site of sports, cultural and civic 20 activities, is prominent and popular. Perhaps the best known however is the hospital that bears the family name. Since its founding in 1911 this hospital has served the health needs of the local community, responded to new medical realities and provided employment to Ogden citizens. While we do not have sufficient time today to examine the many ways the decedents of Thomas D. Dee have acted in this communities best interest, it is abundantly clear that they too have been founders, builder and public servants. Thank you. © 2007 WSU Stewart Library, All rights reserved.

Einleitende Bemerkungen
Das von 2001 bis 2005 von der DFG geförderte Projekt 'Preußische Agrarstatistik, Provinz Westfalen' wurde unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Wolfram Fischer und Prof. Dr. Heinrich Volkmann durchgeführt. Bearbeiter des am Institut für Wirtschaftspolitik und Wirtschaftsgeschichte der Freien Universität Berlin angesiedelten Projektes war Dr. Meinolf Nitsch, der den größten Teil der Daten erhoben und in tabellarischer Form aufbereitet hat. Frau Dr. Rita Gudermann hat schließlich das Projekt zu Ende geführt, da Herr Dr. Nitsch aufgrund einer Erkrankung nicht weiter an der Bearbeitung teilnehmen konnte.
Der Band war ursprünglich für die Reihe "Quellen und Forschungen zur Historischen Statistik" (Hrsg.: Wolfram Fischer, Franz Irsiegler, Karl Heinrich Kaufhold und Hugo Ott) vorgesehen und ist daher in seiner Struktur und seinem Gehalt an den Bänden dieser Reihe angepaßt. Er erscheint aufgrund der Unterstützung des LWL-Instituts für westfälische Regionalgeschichte in Münster außerhalb der Reihe.

Gegenstand der Studie
Im Zusammenhang mit den tiefgreifenden Veränderungen in der landwirtschaftlichen Produktion (neue Kulturpflanzen und Tierrassen, größere Anbauflächen, andere Anbaumethoden, Produktion für den Markt) durchlief die deutsche Landwirtschaft im 19. Jahrhundert eine starke Steigerung ihrer Produktivität. Um Fragen der Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeschichte des agrarischen Sektors beantworten zu können, wird eine verlässliche Datenbasis benötigt. Mit der vorliegenden Agrarstatistik Westfalens für das 18. Und 19. Jahrhundert wird ein umfassendes statistisches Grundlagenwerk für die Forschung zur Verfügung gestellt. "Es enthält bisher überwiegend unveröffentlichtes Zahlenmaterial auf der Ebene einzelner weltlicher und geistlicher Herrschaften und ihrer Verwaltungseinheiten vor 1815 sowie der preußischen Provinz Westfalen mir ihren Regierungsbezirken und Kreisen. Aufgenommen wurden Zahlen zu den landwirtschaftlichen Betrieben und zur in diesen Betrieben tätigen Bevölkerung, zur Bodennutzung, zur Anbau- und Erntestatistik, zur Viehhaltung sowie zu Löhnen und Preisen. Nützliche quantitative Informationen, die diesen Gruppen nicht zuzuordnen waren, wurden in einem Anhang zusammengestellt. … Die Kriterien der Bearbeitung (des statistischen Materials) lehnen sich an das von 1981 bis 2005 von der DFG geförderten Schwerpunktprogramm 'Historische Statistik' an. Damit die Daten einem großen Nutzerkreis für verschiedene Forschungsaufgaben zur Verfügung stehen können, wurden sie so quellennah wie möglich belassen. (Es wurden keine Schätzungen für fehlende Werte vorgenommen.)" Nitsch, Gudermann (2009),S. 2. Trotz der durch die Quellensituation bedingten Lücken sowie regionalen und thematischen ungleich dokumentierten landwirtschaftlichen Verhältnisse liegt ein statistisches Kompendium mit Material aus der Zeit der beginnenden amtlichen Statistik vor, das der weiteren Forschung nach den Auswirkungen der Agrarrevolution auf Besitzverhältnisse, Sozialstruktur und Produktivität dienlich ist. Durch Langzeitvergleiche lassen sich wirtschaftliche und soziale Auswirkungen der Agrarreformen analysieren und es kann festgestellt werden, inwiefern landwirtschaftliche Intensivierungen und Marktintegration bereits schon vor den Agrarreformen stattgefunden haben.

Zeit und Ort der Untersuchung:
Untersuchungszeitraum ist die Periode vom Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts bis 1889, in der sich der Umbruch von der feudalen, ständisch geprägten Landwirtschaft zur industriellen Produktionsweise vollzog. Anfangs- und Endpunkt der Untersuchung wurden zudem durch die Quellensituation vorgegeben, da außer den Preisreihen zu Grundnahrungsmitteln eine breitere quantitative Überlieferung zur Landwirtschaft erst im letzten Drittel des 18. Jahrhunderts verfügbar ist. Daher deckt sich der Untersuchungszeitraum mit der Periode der beginnenden und sich konsolidierenden amtlichen Statistik, für die schließlich in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts Methoden der systematischen Erhebung, Bearbeitung und Publikation der quantitativ erhebbaren Verhältnisse in der Landwirtschaft herausgearbeitet und angewendet wurden.

Geografische Beschreibung des Untersuchungsraumes:
Der Raum Westfalen umfasst ca. 30000 Quadtratkilometer und ist durch vier große Naturlandschaften geprägt: der nördliche Teil der Provinz mit dem westfälischen Tiefland, die westfälische Bucht mit dem Münsterland, das Weserbergland, und schließlich das Südergebirge in der südlichen Spitze Westfalens.
Während der nördliche Zipfel der Provinz Westfalen eine vom Meeresklima bestimmte Geest-Landschaft mit sandigen aber auch undurchlässigen Böden, so dass es auch zur Bildung von Mooren kam. Die westfälische Bucht mit dem Münsterland ist geprägt durch zum Teil lehmige Sande im Westen und Nordosten sowie fruchtbaren Lössboden im Süden (z.B. Emscherland). Schwere, undurchlässige Kleiböden finden sich im Kernmünsterland. Das Weserbergland ist eine Hügellandschaft mit fruchtbaren Mulden, so dass eine Vielfalt von Kleinlandschaften entstehen konnte. Die Böden sind kalkhaltig. Das Südergebirge setzt sich zusammen aus dem Siegerland und verschiedenen Teilen des Sauerlands. Die Höhenzüge erreichen eine durchschnittliche Höhe von 400 Metern, im Hochsauerland von über 800 Metern und wechseln mit tief eingesunkenen Flusstälern. Kalkarme Lehm- und Sandböden herrschen vor.
Die Bodenformen und der Mangel an großen schiffbaren Flüssen waren ausschlaggebend für die Lage Westfalens im Verkehrssystem: Die vom großen Frankfurter Verkehrsfeld ausgehenden Handelswege führten an den westfälischen Gebirgen vorbei zu den holländischen und deutschen Küsten. Stattdessen entwickelte sich ein starker Binnenverkehr in west-östlicher Richtung (Rheine-Osnabrück-Minden und Essen-Dortmund-Soest-Paderborn) sowie zwischen der flämisch-holländischen Küste und dem östlichen Westfalen. Bedeutende Städte entstanden entlang dieser Verkehrsachsen.
Entsprechend den naturräumlichen Verhältnissen bildeten sich sehr unterschiedliche Wirtschaftsregionen aus, in denen neben landwirtschaftlich geprägten Regionen sich auch Gewerbegebiete herausbildeten. Erst in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts führte die Industrialisierung und Verstädterung zu einem starken Anwachsen der Ruhrgebietsregion.

Politische Beschreibung des Untersuchungsraumes:
Die politischen Grenzen des Raumes Westfahlen haben sich häufig geändert. Bis Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts ist das Gebiet durch eine starke territoriale Zersplitterung gekennzeichnet. Um 1800 liegt noch eine Vielfalt geistlicher und weltlicher Herrschaftsgebiete vor. Entsprechend groß war die Vielfalt rechtlicher Strukturen. Etwa zwei Drittel der Fläche nahmen die geistlichen Territorien mit bis zu 90% katholischer Bevölkerung ein, unter denen wiederum die Fürstentümer Münster und Paderborn sowie das Herzogtum Westfalen und das Vest Recklinghausen die größten waren. Zu Preußen gehörten dagegen die mehrheitlich protestantischen Gebiete (Fürstentum Minden, Grafschaften Ravensgburg, Lingen, Tecklenburg und Mark). Bei den übrigen Territorien handelte es sich um Kleinstaaten.
Nach den Befreiungskriegen von der französischen Herrschaft gewann Preußen zu seinem westfälischen Besitz den größten Teil des übrigen Kulturraumes Westfalens dazu und es wurde die Provinz Westfalen gebildet (1815). Preußen integrierte die unterschiedlichen Verwaltungssysteme der hinzugekommenen Gebiete in ein einheitliches Verwaltungssystem, wobei die Statistik als Hilfswissenschaft einen wichtigen Beitrag leistete. Preußen gliederte die Provinz in drei Regierungsbezirke (Münster, Minden, Arnsberg). Die Regierungsbezirke wurden wiederum in 34 Kreise unterteilt. Damit war eine konsequente staatliche Verwaltungseinheit eingeführt worden. Von 1832 bis 1967 blieben die Kreise konstant, was für statistische Vergleiche von Bedeutung ist.

Quellenproblematik:
Sieht man von den weiter zurückreichenden Preisreihen für Grundnahrungsmitteln - vor allem für Getreide - ab, setzt eine breitere quantitative Überlieferung zur landwirtschaftlichen Bevölkerung, zu ihren Eigentumsverhältnissen und ihrer Landausstattung erst im letzten Drittel des 18. Jahrhunderts ein. Quantitative Angaben zur Entwicklung der Landwirtschaft von sehr unterschiedlicher Qualität finden sich verstreut in Publikationen und Archivalien verschiedenster Herkunft.
Seit Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts wurden in zunehmend größerer Zahl in Preußen statistisch-topographische Beschreibungen der Kreise und Regierungsbezirke angefertigt. Allerdings kann das in diesen Beschreibungen verstreute Zahlenmaterial nur selten für eine fundierte statistische Analyse herangezogen werden. Die statistischen Angaben lassen sich nur eingeschränkt vergleichen. Nicht nur sind die Beschreibungen von sehr unterschiedlicher Qualität, es liegen ihnen oft unterschiedliche Stichjahre, Maße und Gewichte zugrunde. Daher wurden diese Berichte nur zum Teil in das vorliegende statistische Kompendium mit einbezogen, sofern es sich um zusammenfassende Darstellungen handelte.
Herausgegebene Zeitschriften, wie z.B. das 'Westphälische Magazin zur Geographie, Historie und Statistik', die 'Mittheilungen des Statistischen Bureaus' in Berlin, oder die 'Tabellen und amtlichen Nachrichten über den Preußischen Staat', publizierten in den regelmäßig erschienenen Ausgaben statistisches Material zur Land- und Forstwirtschaft, wodurch diese Periodika zu einer bedeutende Quelle für die vorliegenden Arbeit wurden.
Wichtige Quellenbestände für die Zeit vor der Gründung des Statistischen Büros in Berlin konnten die Primärforscher in den Archiven ausfindig machen. Es handelt sich hierbei um die Akten der Ministerien für Landwirtschaft und Finanzen sowie der preußischen Ober- und Regierungspräsidien, die zum größten Teil im Geheimen Staatsarchiv in Berlin und im westfälischen Staatsarchiv in Münster liegen.
In den 1870er und 1880er Jahren finden die reichseinheitlich strukturierten landwirtschaftlichen Berufs- und Betriebszählungen statt und liefern vergleichbares, einheitlich erfaßtes statistisches Material.

Hauptaufgabe der Bearbeiter der vorliegenden Studie war es, das verstreute statistische Material aus den unterschiedlichen Quellen der geistlichen und weltlichen Grundbesitzer und ihrer Verwaltungseinheiten, der erfaßten amtlichen Daten durch die Regierungsbezirke und die Provinz sowie aus den Berufs- und Betriebszählungen zusammenzutragen, auf Zuverlässigkeit zu prüfen und auszuwählen und das brauchbare statistische Material in eine benutzerfreundliche Form zu bringen. Ein vollständiges, die Region, die Zeit und die Sachgebiete abdeckendes Kompendium konnte jedoch dabei nicht entstehen. Lange zusammenhängende Reihen sind selten. Auch thematische und regionale Ungleichgewichte konnten nicht vermieden werden.

Die Hauptschwierigkeit in der Zusammenstellung des verstreuten und überwiegend inkongruenten statistischen Quellenmaterials entstand durch die unterschiedlichen Erhebungsmethoden, die den Vergleich zwischen den verschiedenen Berichtsjahren sowie zwischen den Regionen erschwerten. "Gerade die großen Disparitäten des Zahlenmaterials sind es schließlich gewesen, die eine erfolgreiche Bearbeitung und Zusammenstellung der deutschen Agrarstatistik bisher verhindert haben. So differieren Erhebungszeitpunkte und –orte, Maße und Gewichte sowie die den Erhebungen zugrundeliegenden Definitionen und Verfahrensweisen. Hinzu kommen Verschiebungen der administrativen Grenzen sowie die Probleme der bei den ländlichen Betrieben dieser Zeit so gut wie immer fehlenden Buchführung. Deshalb beruht ein großer Teil der älteren Daten auf Schätzungen." Nitsch, Gudermann, 2009, S. 15. Im Laufe der Erhebungen wurden die Erfassungsmethoden anspruchsvoller und entwickelten sich vom schlichten Zählen hin zu zuverlässigen Katasteraufnahmen mit Bonitierung der Böden (=Einteilung der Böden in Klassen der Beschaffenheit und Ertragsfähigkeit) sowie der regelmäßigen Erhebung von Anbau und Ertrag. Mit dem Ziel übersichtliche Tabellen mit vergleichbarem Zahlenmaterial zu schaffen, sind die Angaben vereinheitlicht bzw. auf moderne Maße und Gewichte umgerechnet worden. "Der Akribie von Meinolf Nitsch ist es zu verdanken, dass den Zeitgenossen eine Reihe von Rechenfehlern nachgewiesen werden konnten, … . Wo sie offensichtlich waren, wurden sie für die vorliegende Publikation stillschweigend korrigiert. Auf schwerwiegendere Abweichungen wird in den Anmerkungen hingewiesen. Leider ließen sich jedoch nicht alle Unstimmigkeiten … korrigieren. " S. 15

Der Datenteil der Studie gliedert sich in die folgenden Bereiche auf:

There are over 7 million cultural values in Lithuanian museums. A significant part of them are archaeological findings. However, only a tiny part of them gets to the museums, i.e., usually, visually the most beautiful and representative findings. In recent years, we can see the increase in cooperation between archaeologists and restorers of archaeological findings. Therefore, the most valuable and least lasting findings come to the hands of restorers directly from the place of discovery and are immediately preserved and restored. Such are the archaeological leather footwear findings. Archaeological footwear findings are rare among the museum exhibits. Just a few Lithuanian museums exhibit archaeological footwear findings of the 14–18th centuries.Leather footwear archaeological findings are often found in only few places in Lithuania. The specific archaeological environment is the decisive factor for remaining of leather artifacts. Most of them are found in the ancient cities of Lithuania, which were major political and commercial centers in their time: Kernavė, Vilnius, Kaunas, and Klaipėda. In other cities and towns, such findings are extremely rare or not found at all.In 1990, during the archaeological research in the former Carmelite monastery territory in Kėdainiai, in Didžioji Str. No. 17, 19, 21, in the small household pit, archeologists found leather strips and footwear manufacturing spoilage from the 17th century. Supposedly, there had to be quite a large shoemaker's holding and workshop in the surrounding area, which probably belonged to Petras Mukčius, indicated in 1686 city's inventory. In the findings list of research report, the leather artifacts are not mentioned and their further fate is unknown. Leather footwear leftovers are also mentioned among the findings of 2008 archaeological excavations in Ukmergė, in Utenos Str. Ten leather findings were inventoried in archaeological excavations report from the first half of the 18th century: footwear details, leather strips, straps fragments. Quite exceptional exhibits are the restored archaeological findings from Kurtuvėnai (Šiauliai district) St. Apostle Jacob's Church, which are stored in Šiauliai "Aušra" museum and were restored in Pranas Gudynas Restoration Centre of Lithuanian Art Museum. In the basement of this church, in disintegrated crypt, the remains of two men from the 18th century were discovered. The surviving footwear was restored – it is a pair of boots of very complex construction, which were thoroughly made from bovine leather of vegetable tanning.As we can see, the footwear findings are rarely found during periphery archaeological excavations. Therefore, the footwear findings of Žagarė found during archaeological researches gained special attention from researchers.According to Algimantas Miškinis, the renaissance rectangular market square of New Žagarė was probably formed in the second half of the 16th century. It is certain, that even in the first half of the 19th century, there stood wooden trading stalls, which were destroyed by a fire that devastated the town in 1881. After the Second World War, in 1947, market places were demolished and trees were planted in the square. Since 1997, archaeological excavations of various scope were carried out in the territory of the square and its surroundings. Archaeological footwear findings were detected only during the last archaeological excavations in the market square, in 2012. The findings came directly from archaeological sites to Pranas Gudynas Restoration Center of Lithuanian Art Museum.Two different preservation methods are applied to leather findings: 1. dressing, 2. the treatment with solutions of low molecular weight hydrophilic compounds (PEG-400, 600 or glycerol). These methods help to maintain leather softness and consolidate and protect it from atmospheric moisture fluctuations. Leather Dressing is characterized by the fact that it limits or cancels the possibility of re-preservation of findings. Therefore, the preservation with PEG solution in water was chosen. In addition, the findings were wet and sufficiently soft. To preserve the leather findings we used the 10% PEG-400 solution in water-alcohol mixture (1:1) with 3% antiseptic Boramon C30 additive. After the preservation of leather and disbandment of details, cracks and laminated leather layers were glued together with acrylic copolymer A-45K acetone solution. Three different molecular weight polyethylene glycol solutions, PEG-400, 1500 and 5000 were used to preserve wood. The wood surface was covered with a protective coating of wax balsam Pronto.Most of the information about the footwear of the late historic times, which interests the researchers, is best accumulated by conserving findings before their restoration, i.e., by connecting the details and thus restoring the image close to its authentic state. When producing leather articles of complex design, the craftsmen used not only skin, but also other kinds of materials – wood, threads, textile or metal. The author of this publication drew all footwear details, determined the connection seams of the details, indicated the animal's skin type, measured the leather thickness, ascertained footwear design, identified patterns and determined the footwear sizes according to the standard used in Lithuania. Also, the research set out to determine the timber type of certain footwear parts.In total, 2 low-cut shoes (r. s. No. 116, 178) and 3 mules (r. s. No. 118, 177 and 179) were restored. Horse skin was used for the treadsole of the low-cut shoe (r. s. No. 116), size 25 (baby footwear), while cattle skin was used for the upper part. The inlay, which was made from the part of another insole, improved shoe wearing and probably solved the problem of too large footwear. Low-cut shoe (r. s. No. 178) (Fig. 2) – the only decorated footwear finding, size 33, with low heel. All details are made from bovine skin of various thickness. Low-cut shoe is attached to the leg by front lacing.Mule (r. s. No. 118), size 33, with medium height middle heel. All leather parts are made from bovine skin but of a different thickness. Birch wood was used as filler. The unusual way of insole stitching suggests that the artist saved both materials and time. Mule (r. s. No. 177), size 39, has a pointed toe part and low heel. This footwear finding has the most intricate construction of this complex. Animal skin of different age was used to make this footwear. Based on the design and quality of materials used, it can be said that according to the price it had to be the most expensive footwear. Mule (r. s. No. 179) remained incomplete, a part of heel had been torn apart and some details are missing, it could have been size 38–39. All details were made from bovine skin of various thicknesses.The historic examples of the 17th century footwear are exhibited in major museums around the world, also the museums specialising only in the history of the development of footwear have accumulated historical footwear of this period. However, the vast majority of the exhibits are luxurious footwear of the rich. We see quite a different picture concerning footwear of ordinary people – peasants and townspeople. This footwear was often worn out and thrown away, therefore there are no historical findings. The largest amount of information about these findings is provided precisely by archaeological material and iconography.Comparing the Žagarė urban archaeological findings with the iconography data of Western Europe, it can be said that three mules that were found during the research can confirm the fact that this type of footwear at that time was very popular and well-liked among both rich and ordinary citizens. Footwear – (except for mule r. s. No. 177, which has a distinct design and sewing technique) low-cut shoes and mules, which were discovered, have a similar design, and a very similar sewing style. It can be assumed that the latter footwear could be made by the same craftsman. ; Straipsnyje, remiantis archeologiniais duomenimis, apžvelgiama XVII–XVIII a. Lietuvos periferijos miestelių avalynė. Radiniai autoriaus konservuoti ir restauruoti, aptartos tokio pobūdžio radinių konservavimo ir restauravimo problemos, siekiant maksimaliai išsaugoti jų informatyvumą tolesniam įvairiapusiam pažinimui. Ištirta radinių konstrukcija ir medžiagiškumas, atskleista avalynės gamybos technologija. Radiniai palyginti su to laikotarpio Vakarų Europos analogais.

Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: Eine Stadt ist nicht gleich eine Stadt. Anzunehmen, eine Stadt sei eine bloße Zusammenstellung unterschiedlichster Einzelkomponenten, die in einem Wirkungs- und Funktionengefüge zueinander stehen und dadurch ein Gesamtbild erzeugen, wird vermutlich nicht zu einem zufriedenstellenden Ergebnis führen, denn allein zu sagen, Stadt sei die Gesamtheit ihrer Einzelteile: Straßen, Plätze, Gebäude, Parkanlagen, Infrastrukturen usw., erfüllt kaum den Anspruch der Vollständigkeit. Eine solche Stadt wäre vermutlich eine leblose Stadt. Gleich einer Kulisse für ein Theaterstück stellt sich die städtische Silhouette, die Materialität der Stadt, als urbane Kulisse dar. Vor dieser spielt sich das städtische Leben ab, durch das der Stadtraum seine Bedeutung und Funktion erhält. Die menschliche Aneignung, die Belebung des materiellen Raumes macht aus der städtischen Kulisse das, was im eigentlichen Sinne unter Stadt zu verstehen ist. Die Stadt ist keineswegs nur als materieller Raum zu verstehen, dieser wird in einem immerwährenden Prozess angeeignet, mit Symbolismen und Bedeutungen versehen, menschlich belebt. Stadt wird auch nicht nur ihren unterschiedlichen Funktionszuweisungen nach genutzt, sie wird dabei auch erlebt, namentlich gefühlt. Sie vermittelt einen Eindruck und wird auf eine Art erlebt, die über die visuell, auditiv und olfaktorisch wahrnehmbaren Komponenten hinausgeht und sich aufgrund verschiedenster Wirkursachen zu einem immateriellen Gesamteindruck verdichtet. Die Stadt wird zwar wahrgenommen aufgrund ihrer Materialität, es werden Geräusche, Gerüche, Bilder perzipiert, aber zudem wird die Stadt auch 'empfunden' und gefühlsmäßig wahrgenommen. Die Fachliteratur spricht in diesem Zusammenhang vom 'gelebten' Raum, in deutlicher Abgrenzung zum rein physisch-materiellen Umgebungsraum. Wenn vom 'gelebten' Raum die Rede ist, dann soll damit betont werden, dass es sich nicht nur um den materiellen Raum handelt, sondern dass von Lebensqualitäten die Rede ist, von menschlichem Ergreifen und Ergriffensein. Das Konzept 'gelebter' Raum suggeriert, dass Städte und städtische Räume Individualität aufweisen und zwar nicht nur aufgrund ihrer materiellen Diversität, sondern auch aufgrund ihrer jeweils unterschiedlichen Aneignung, Belebung, der humanen Agitation, die in jedem Raum ein besonderes Klima, eine spezifisch Grundstimmung schafft. Beleben und Erleben stehen dabei im Vordergrund, beide sind miteinander verknüpft. Die Form der Belebung hat direkten Einfluss auf die Form des Erlebens und ebenso wirkt sich das Erleben unmittelbar auf die Art der Belebung aus. Das Wesen der Stadt und deren Räume, die Stadt als 'gelebter' Raum, sind nicht einfach kategorisier- und katalogisierbar. Ein diskursives Erfassen ist mit erheblichen Schwierigkeiten verbunden. Während Handlungs- und Aneignungsmuster sowie Anschauungsräume noch relativ einfach zu dokumentieren sind, ist die systematische Vermittlung gefühlter Umgebungsqualität nur begrenzt möglich, da Gefühle und Anmutungen einerseits schwer zu identifizieren und andererseits schwer zu verbalisieren sind. In dieser Arbeit soll der Versuch unternommen werden, einen konkreten städtischen Raum als 'gelebten' Raum zu betrachten, zu beschreiben und zu beleuchten. Die Frage ist dabei auch, inwieweit sich das Konzept des 'gelebten' Raumes anwendungsorientiert verwerten lässt. Untersuchungsgegenstand, Zielsetzung und Fragestellung der Arbeit: Der Untersuchungsgegenstand dieser Arbeit ist ein öffentlicher städtischer Freiraum, ein Platz. Öffentliche Plätze sind im Hinblick auf ihre Wirkung sensible Kumulationspunkte im städtischen Gefüge. Die Wirkung eines städtischen Platzes kann sehr weit in die urbane Umgebung abstrahlen und den Gesamteindruck eines städtischen Quartiers oder sogar einer ganzen Stadt sowie deren Antlitz, Atmosphäre und Qualität wesentlich mitprägen. Plätze sind konstitutiv für die Identität, das Image und die Qualität einer Stadt. Städte werden auch über ihrer Freiräume definiert und Plätze dienen somit als städtisches Prestigeobjekt. Sie sind wichtige Darstellungsmittel im stadtplanerischen Handlungsfeld. Ihre Bedeutsamkeit rechtfertigt eine umsichtige Handhabung ihrer Gestaltung. Gleichwohl Städtebauliche Planung nicht nur funktional sondern auch nach ästhetischen Aspekten und auf Wirkung ausgerichtet ist, wird eine ganzheitliche Wirkung häufig repräsentativen, politischen oder ökonomischen Vorgaben untergeordnet. Doch ist der qualitative Wert eines städtischen Raumes kaum oder nicht nur anhand seines materiellen und ästhetischen Kapitals zu bestimmen. Mit dem Anliegen, hochwertige, lebenswerte städtische Räume zu schaffen, sollte auch ein Interesse für die gefühlsmäßige Wirkung von Räumen einhergehen. Städtische Räume sind komplexe Gebilde, in denen sich unterschiedliche Wirkursachen zu ganzheitlichen Ausdrucksmomenten vereinen. Geschichte überlagert Gegenwart, Wahrnehmung generiert Verhalten, äußerliche Gestalt beeinflusst Aneignung. Ansinnen städtebaulicher Planung sollte ein umfassendes Verständnis von Raum sein, das über materielle und ästhetische Aspekte hinausgeht und den entsprechenden Raum als wirksamen Charakter im Stadtbild begreift, als 'gelebten' Raum. Als Forschungsgegenstand wurde der Leipziger Augustusplatz gewählt, ein zentraler öffentlicher Raum in Leipzig. Dieser Platz stellt sich im Stadtgefüge als eine weiträumige Freifläche dar. Er galt in früheren Zeiten als einer der größten Europas und auch als einer der schönsten. Wie viele europäische Plätze, Bauten und Ensembles, fiel er der gewaltsamen Zerstörung im 2. Weltkrieg anheim. Seitdem hat sich sein Antlitz, das zuvor in über 100jähriger Entstehungsphase unnachahmlich und stetig gewachsen war, stark verändert. Bei der Neugestaltung ist einem feinfühligen Umgang mit kulturellen Zeitzeugnissen keine Rechnung getragen worden. Stattdessen wurde der Augustusplatz unter Aufopferung historischer Bausubstanz zum Vorzeigeobjekt propagandistischer DDR-Ideologie und -architektur. Im Wendeherbst 1989 fanden hier unter anderem die friedlichen Montagsdemonstrationen statt. Nachfolgend wurde versucht, in einem vorsichtigen Umgestaltungsprozess den Platz wieder seiner ursprünglichen Bestimmung eines innerstädtischen Freiraumes mit bestimmten Aufenthaltsqualitäten und Nutzungsanreizen zurückzuführen und damit der Stadt Leipzig ein Stück verlustig gegangener Identität zurückzugeben. Hauptanliegen dieser Arbeit ist die Exploration des Leipziger Augustusplatzes als 'gelebter' Raum. Der Schwerpunkt soll auf einer ganzheitlichen Beschreibung des Platzraumes liegen. Dabei werden nicht nur physisch-materielle Gegebenheiten, sondern auch die dahinter liegenden unsichtbaren Strukturen, der Charakter des Platzes und seine Atmosphäre, seine Aneignung und Belebung, seine Entstehungsgeschichte und seine Bedeutung wichtig sein. Der Platz wird in seiner Entwicklung beleuchtet und vergleichend dazu der Status Quo ermittelt im Hinblick auf eine umfassende Gesamtbeurteilung des Augustusplatzes. Gang der Untersuchung: Die Forschungsarbeit ist in zwei Hauptteile gegliedert. Teil A liefert theoretische Grundlagen und Teil B ist dem Untersuchungsgegenstand gewidmet. Eingangs soll eine abrissartige Einordnung des thematischen Überbaues 'gelebter' Raum stattfinden. Kapitel 2 befasst sich daher mit einem neuen geographischen Raumverständnis sowie konkret mit dem Konzept des 'gelebten' Raumes und seiner Aspekte. Die thematische Hinführung dient gleichzeitig der Begriffserläuterung und Definition. Einer allgemeinen Einführung in die Raumkonzeptionen folgt eine Charakterisierung des 'gelebten' Raumes und seiner Spezifika. Kapitel 3 gibt einen einführenden Überblick zur Systematik innerstädtischer Plätze. Dabei werden die Entstehungsgeschichte städtischer Plätze, Typologie, formale Merkmale sowie deren Bedeutung im urbanen Raum erläutert. Im anschließenden Teil B wird in Kapitel 4 der Untersuchungsgegenstand 'Leipziger Augustusplatz' in Anlehnung an die in Kapitel 3 vorgetragene systematische Typologie von Stadtplätzen vorgestellt. Die Geschichte des Platzes, seine formale Gestalt und Ausstattung wird beschrieben und seine Bedeutung erklärt. In Kapitel 5 werden die im Hinblick auf die empirische Untersuchung des Platzes verwendeten Untersuchungsmethoden und der Untersuchungsablauf vorgestellt. In Kapitel 6 werden detailliert die Untersuchungsergebnisse der einzelnen Untersuchungsabschnitte präsentiert. Er befindet sich am östlichen Außenrand der historischen Altstadt. In ihn mündet die Grimmaische Straße, die ihn quert und an seinem östlichen Rand in den Grimmaischen Steinweg übergeht. Flankiert wird der Platz im nordwestlichen Bereich von der Goethestraße, an seiner gesamten westlichen Seite vom Georgiring. Westlich schließt sich die historische Altstadt an. Der Augustusplatz ist Bestandteil des um die historische Altstadt herumführenden und größtenteils begrünten Promenadenrings. Er stellt im Stadtgefüge optisch einen markanten Punkt dar, da er eine relativ große Freifläche bildet. Zudem ist er mit bedeutsamen Gebäuden umstanden. An seiner südlichen Westseite befindet sich das Hauptgebäude der Universität Leipzig, das derzeit neu gebaut wird. Nördlich wird er vom Opernhaus und südlich vom Gewandhaus begrenzt. Die Entstehung des Augustusplatzes im historischen Kontext: Zur Vorgeschichte des Platzes: Der Augustusplatz bzw. das Gelände des heutigen Augustusplatzes gehörte ursprünglich nicht zum historischen Stadtkern, sondern lag außerhalb der Stadtmauern, deren einstige Lage der heutige Promenadenring nachzeichnet. Im Osten befand sich das Grimmaische Tor, dessen Vorplatz ('die Gegend vor dem Grimmaischen Thore' genannt) das Areal des heutigen Augustusplatzes einnimmt. Die Geschichte des Leipziger Augustusplatzes lässt sich in die drei Abschnitte Vorstadt, Festung, Platz gliedern. Vorstadt: Das Grimmaische Torwar 1498-1501 erbaut worden. Vor dem Tor entwickelten sich im 13./14. Jahrhundert die Grimmaische Vorstadt mit Wohnhäusern, Werkstätten und Gärten. In Kriegszeiten wurden die Vorstädte immer wieder abgerissen und neu erbaut. Durch die Schaffung eines breiten Glacis sollte den Belagerern die Möglichkeit genommen werden, in den Gebäuden Schutz und Deckung zu finden. Im 17. Jahrhundert endete die Phase der Vorstadt mit der Errichtung eines modernen Festungswerkes. Der Funktionswandel vom Vorstadtareal mit Wohnbebauung zum Festungs- und Verteidigungsgelände legte den Grundstein für die spätere Bedeutungszuweisung als öffentlichen Raum mit jeweils zeitgemäßer Nutzung. Festung: Im 17. Jahrhundert wurde das Grimmaische Stadttor erbaut. Von 1642 bis 1650 wurde die Anlage zum sogenannten 'Grimmaischen Werk' ausgebaut, welches anschließend zum 1690 fertiggestellten Grimmaischen Tor wurde. Im Siebenjährigen Krieg (1756 – 1763) hatte sich die Befestigungsanlage aus dem Mittelalter trotz wiederholten Instandsetzungsversuchen als untauglich zum Schutz gegen feindliche Angriffe erwiesen. Nach Beendigung des Krieges 1763 stellte der Kurfürst Johann Georg II. daher die Festungsanlage und auch das Areal des heutigen Augustusplatzes dem Rat der Stadt zur Verfügung, mit der Auflage, sie zu gemeinnützigen Zwecken umzugestalten. Ab 1784 begann man mit dem Abtrag der Grimmaischen Bastion. Die Doppeltoranlage des Grimmaischen Tores wurde erst 1831 abgerissen. Mit der Verfüllung der Festungsgräben endet die Vorgeschichte des Platzes und seine eigentliche Geschichte wird eingeleitet. Die Promenaden und der 'Platz vor dem Grimmaischen Thore': Schon seit dem Mittelalter besuchten die Stadtbewohner die Areale vor den Toren Leipzigs, um sich zu entspannen und zu vergnügen. Für Volksfeste wie Vogelschießen oder das Johannisfest bedurfte es Platzes außerhalb der Stadtmauern. Das Gelände des späteren Promenadenrings wurde anfangs nur als Übergang zu den Kaffegärten, Vergnügungslokalen und Festwiesen der Vorstädte gesehen. In den Jahren 1702/1703 wurden rings um den Stadtkern Alleen von Eichen-, Linden- und Weidenbäumen von Bürgermeister Franz Conrad Romanus angelegt und damit eine Route für das Promenieren und Reiten um die Stadt herum geschaffen. In dem Bereich zwischen Grimmaischen und Halleschem Tor ließ der Leipziger Baudirektor Johann Friedrich Danthe zwischen 1786 und 1796, eine Parklandschaft anlegen. Vor dem Grimmaischen Tor, auf dem Gelände des heutigen Augustusplatzes, der im Einfahrtsbereich zum Stadtzentrum lag, schuf Danthe eine Umrahmung aus Pappeln und Kastanien. Ein Fahrweg teilte diesen mittig. Der Platz hatte schon seine ungefähren späteren Ausmaße und seine Lage und blieb vorerst unbebaut, er wurde lediglich von Barrieren aus Kanthölzern begrenzt. In den Messezeiten stauten sich auf dem Platz Wagen und Messeverkäufer. Der Promenadenring wurde zu einer beliebten Flaniermeile: Die bürgerliche Gesellschaft pflegte hier ihre Freizeit zu verbringen mit Spaziergängen um die Stadt herum, um zu sehen und gesehen zu werden. Ebenso hatten Bürger niederer sozialer Schichten hier die Möglichkeit an der 'großen Gesellschaft' teilzuhaben. Der Handel fand innerhalb der Stadtmauern statt, Entspannung und Vergnügen suchte man jedoch davor. So wurde aus dem Gelände vor den Toren der Stadt ein urbaner Raum, der die innere, ehemals ummauerte Stadt mit den Vorstädten zu verband. Zentrumsnah und doch großflächig war er ideal geeignet, zum Dreh- und Angelpunkt der Großstadtentwicklung zu werden. Er nahm neu entstehende Verkehrsströme auf und wurde zum Freizeit- und Repräsentationsraum für die an Bevölkerung rasant zunehmende Stadt. Kulturelle und gesellschaftliche Bauten und Denkmäler entstanden. Auf dem Platz vor dem Grimmaischen Tor wurden zwischen 1789 und 1799 zwei Rasenrondelle angelegt. Der Plan von 1799 zeigt, dass bereits in dieser Zeit ein Postgebäude östlich an den Platz grenzte. Bebauung vor 1831: Als zum Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts die ästhetische Gestaltung des damals noch namenlosen Augustusplatzes begann, grenzte dieser mit seiner Westseite an die äußere Stadtmauer. An das zentral befindliche Grimmaische Tor schlossen sich in nördlicher Richtung die Kollegiengebäude der Universität und südlich der mittelalterliche Baukomplex des ehemaligen Dominikanerklosters (Paulerkloster, Paulinum), inzwischen der Universität angeeignet, an. Nach der Säkularisierung des Klosters mit Einführung der Reformation 1539 hatte der Herzog Moritz von Sachsen im Jahr 1543 die Klosteranlage der Universität übereignete, die 1409 in Leipzig gegründet worden war. Die Universitätskirche wurde für den evangelischen Gottesdienst sowie als Aula umgebaut und am 22.8.1545 von Dr. Martin Luther geweiht.
