The memoir is the most popular and expressive literary form of our time. Writers embrace the memoir and readers devour it, propelling many memoirs by relative unknowns to the top of the best-seller list. Writing programs challenge authors to disclose themselves in personal narrative. Memoir and personal narrative urge writers to face the intimacies of the self and ask what is true. In The Memoir and the Memoirist, critic and memoirist Thomas Larson explores the craft and purpose of writing this new form. Larson guides the reader from autobiography and the personal essay to the memoir--a genre focused on a particularly emotional relationship in the author's past, an intimate story concerned more with who is remembering, and why, than with what is remembered. The Memoir and the Memoirist touches on the nuances of memory, of finding and telling the truth, and of disclosing one's deepest self. Von 28 Dozenten und Dozentinnen eines Lehrerausbildungskollegs wurden persönliche Narrative zur Arbeitsplatzsituation erhoben als Zugang zum Verstehen von deren individuellen und professionellen Welten. In die Untersuchung einbezogen wurden Erzählungen über lokale Themen, Charakteristika und Sprachstile. Die Narrative wurden interpretiert unter Hinzuziehung des strukturellen Ansatzes von LEVI-STRAUSS, des sozial-konstruktionistischen Modells von GERGEN und GERGEN und der Aristotelischen Dramaturgielehre und Ästhetik. Die Analyse zeigt, dass die Dozenten und Dozentinnen nicht über eine einheitliche Terminologie oder über ein gemeinsames Konzept hinsichtlich ihrer Arbeitswelt und der eigenen Rolle in dieser Welt verfügten. Bezüge zur Identität der Befragten fanden sich in deren expliziten und impliziten Strategien zur Sicherung von Akzeptanz und zum eigenen Beitrag in dem beruflichen Handlungsfeld. Wir nehmen deshalb an, dass für die befragten Dozentinnen und Dozenten Zugehörigkeit und Kontrolle von besonderer Bedeutung sind. Da viele der Befragten teilzeitbeschäftigt waren, fanden sich im Rahmen des Kollegs nur wenige Interaktionen und in der Folge eine geringe Teilhabe an der Gestaltung des beruflichen Umfelds.

When employees commit transgressions, organizations often use tools of organizational control to prevent them from transgressing again. We investigate whether organizations can use transgression transparency to rehabilitate transgressors. Although making transgressions transparent—which may result in stigmatization or public shaming—is generally assumed to be purely punitive, we show when and how it can foster rehabilitation. We draw on a longitudinal, qualitative dataset of 23 similarly situated transgressors at a military academy that added transparency to traditional punishment by requiring transgressors to wear a pin that signaled their transgression. Data from transgressors and from other organizational members revealed that instead of prompting persistent stigmatization, social awareness of the transgression prompted others' inquiry, gradually engaging transgressors in a coactive process to develop a mutually acceptable narrative of their transgression through a mechanism we call personal narrative control. For that personal narrative to endure, transgressors needed to exercise self-control and avoid further transgressions, as they did in our study even after the pin was removed, signaling rehabilitation. We induce four contextual conditions for transgression transparency to trigger personal narrative control and theorize how they might generalize to other organizations seeking to rehabilitate transgressors.

This dissertation explores the values of nature through the personal narratives of landowners in the Overberg area of Western Cape, South Africa. In the past, scholarly literature has imagined nature as separated from the human world. Historically, mainstream conservation methods have followed ideals of nature in forming environmental management policies and practices, aiming to create and maintain an isolated nature. This ideal of nature has largely ignored the roles of humans within the environment. A range of new fields of studies around identity, business and politics explore new ways of imagining nature, focusing on the human within nature and the nature within the human. Using these alternative imaginings, this research uncovers a variety of ways 'humanness' and nature are deeply embedded within each other. This research challenges the ideal of a pristine otherness whilst both supporting and filling in the gaps of contemporary alternative literature. The personal narratives of 34 landowners were gathered during 10 weeks of fieldwork. These stories offered an alternative portrayal of the relationship between humans, nature and conservation. Landownership was more than business as usual; land embodied deep and meaningful emotions, experiences and discourses of daily human life. Landscapes embodied personal emotions of owners through shaping their identities, spirituality, belonging and family histories. Dynamics of politics manifested in different forms such as fear, mistrust, corruption and exclusion throughout landowner's experiences and attitudes. These political factors, emotions and economic dynamics play a role in shaping landowners' attitudes, resistances and participation both towards conservation as well as nature, in turn influencing the way they organise themselves in relation to conservation bodies such as government run programmes as well as NGOs. It also affects how they organise, negotiate and manage themselves and their land. Conservation management of land should take into account these deeply complex, multidimensional and integrated complexities entrenched within daily narratives of landownership.
