"Once the third largest salmon-producing stream in the Western United States, the Klamath River has, as of 2014, fallen to only 4% of its previous productivity. This gives the once wealthy Karuk Tribe the dubious honor of having one of the most dramatic and recent diet shifts in North America. Unable to fulfill their traditional fishermen roles, Karuk people are now among the most impoverished in the state. In Salmon and Acorns Feed Our People, noted environmental sociologist Kari Norgaard investigates how their inability to fish affected the sense of identity and self-esteem of Karuk men. The Turopolje pig is a local porcine breed originating from Croatia characterised by its rusticity and adaptation to the traditional outdoor farming system linked to local oak forests. While this once-widespread breed was almost completely replaced by industrial breeds in the second half of the 20th century, there is growing interest on promoting its production in the framework of sustainable porcine production. The objective of our study (made in project TREASURE) was to characterise the gut microbiota composition in 24 Turopolje pigs raised outdoor by using a conventional feed vs a conventional feed supplemented with acorns. The gut microbiota composition of all pigs was determined by re-sequencing the bacterial 16S gene in an Illumina MiSeq device. Bioinformatics analyses were performed by using Qiime's open-reference OTU calling subsampled method following author's recommendations. NMDS and PERMANOVA analyses performed by using the Vegan R package showed significant effects of diet, showing that the acorn supplementation has a relevant impact on gut microbiota, notably by reducing richness and diversity. This result was confirmed in the differential abundance analysis which showed that 152 out of 1,466 OTUs were significantly different between the two groups. Interestingly, the predicted microbiota metabolic functions that were differentially abundant involved fatty acid and amino-acid metabolisms. This article presents both a history and an administrative analysis of the United Nations Volunteers, an international organization established by a General Assembly resolution in December 1970. The hope that the new organization would presage a new era of multinational volunteerism has proven groundless. In seeking to explain the ineffectiveness of the UN Volunteers, I look inside the organization and find that it has little or no control over its six principal functions. This extreme decentralization of responsibility is then explained not by a static description of the institutional but by focusing on the dynamic process by which state and transnational actors exercised influence during the different stages of the organization's establishment and development. Those actors whose autonomy was most jeopardized by a new volunteer organization were most active in defining and limiting the scope of its operations. The relative lobbying advantages of state and transnational actors meshed with bureaucratic and budgetary constraints to ensure an enfeebled organization.

In der "Rhetorik" behauptet Aristoteles, ein Richter, der es zulasse, dass seine Entscheidungsfindung durch Mitleid beeinflusst wird, werde ungefähr ebenso erfolgreich sein wie ein Zimmermann, der eine verbogene Messlatte verwendet. Für Aristoteles besteht bei der richterlichen Entscheidung das Ziel der Gerechtigkeit in der unparteiischen Anwendung von Gesetzen. In einem gut regierten Staat wird man Rechtsvertreter darauf beschränken, dass sie über die relevanten Fakten sprechen, und man wird sie daran hindern, sich in irgendwelchen nicht zur Sache gehörigen Reden zu ergehen, die den Richter vom geraden Weg ablenken könnten. Der gute Richter unterstellt den Parteien vorgängige Gleichheit, und er beschränkt sich auf die Betrachtung derjenigen Unterschiede, die durch streng juristisch definierte Rechtsverletzungen hervorgerufen werden. Mitleid kann den Geist des Richters nur abschweifen lassen, und es kann ihn nicht auf vernünftige Weise lenken. Der vorliegende Beitrag resümiert die gegenwärtigen Debatten zur Rolle des Mitgefühls vor Gericht und widerspricht insgesamt dabei (im Sinne der obigenaristotelischen Auffassung und des römischen 'sine ira et studio') der immer wieder vertretenen Meinung, der Richter müsse sich mitfühlend auf die Seite des Opfers stellen. The recent proliferation of community-based responses to urban problems has been characterized by a shift away from protest tactics to more moderate approaches of building community and consensus, developing social capital, and identifying and improving local assets. This case study examines the persistence and effectiveness of protest tactics in a campaign by the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now against H&R Block around predatory tax preparation practices. It reveals the potential of direct action, especially when local protests are coordinated nationally. This combination helps to transcend the inherent limits of both community-based activism and national-oriented advocacy efforts.
