Questa ricerca prende in considerazione lo sviluppo della riflessione storica di Carl Heinrich Becker (1876-1933), la definizione del suo personale approccio all'Islam sullo sfondo degli svolgimenti dell'islamistica tedesca del primo Novecento e di alcune figure rilevanti del pensiero storico tedesco. Le quattro parti in cui il seguente lavoro è diviso, pur isolando aspetti specifici della problematica beckeriana, configurano una connessione relativamente omogenea anche dal punto di vista cronologico. E la connessione domina anche fra i due momenti fondamentali della biografia intellettuale di Becker, quello del Kulturpolitiker e quello dell'islamista; se non lo si riconosce si fa un torto alla poliedrica figura di questo studioso e alla sua complessa personalità dominata fin dagli esordi scientifici dall'idea regolativa della Bildung. La prima parte verte sul problema dello sviluppo storico religioso, che viene esaminato a partire dal saggio beckeriano Christentum und Islam (1907) e in riferimento ad alcuni aspetti dell'opera di Julius Wellhausen e di Ernst Troeltsch. La seconda illustra l'evoluzione della storiografia beckeriana sullo sfondo della lotta per l'affermazione di una Kulturgeschichte islamica che si svolse nell'ambito dell'orientalistica tedesca d'inizio secolo. In essa si prende inoltre, in esame la produzione beckeriana relativa all'Africa coloniale (1908-1916) e la complessa questione dei rapporti fra orientalistica e imperialismo. Nella terza parte si prendono in considerazione gli studi beckeriani di storia economica islamica e si tenta di ricostruire la posizione complessiva di Max Weber sull'Islam, attraverso l'analisi delle sezioni relative di Economia e Società, allo scopo di evidenziare i rapporti e le differenze con l'impostazione di Becker. Nell'ultima parte viene proposta in primo luogo, una sintesi della produzione kulturpolitisch beckeriana sullo sfondo della sua attività politica e della crisi culturale del dopoguerra tedesco. In secondo luogo si prende in esame l'ultima fase della riflessione storiografica di Becker, le sue discussioni con Troeltsch sulla costruzione della Kulturgeschichte europea, le sue osservazioni sulla "cultura magica" di Spengler e infine, la progressiva involuzione della sua originaria prospettiva storico culturale.
International audience ; If, to speak about organization, we accept the postulate that there are " good reasons " to speak about it, it is then necessary to investigate the universe of ideology and the way by which models plunge their roots in ideology as well as they create a coherent world. Ideology, as justification, produces representations. What is in question here, is the kind of deformation carried by representations. They produce a structure of the world, the validation of which may be an object of science seen as the construction of a truth in a project of "knowledge" of this world. The concept of ideology is particularly difficult. It benefits and suffers from two major influences in its foundations: that of a political perspective with Marx and Engels and that of the sociological reaction (from Max Weber to Raymond Boudon and Pierre Bourdieu). Ideology as an " attractor " raises the question of " ultimate references ". ; Pour parler d'organisation, on retiendra ici le postulat qu'à un moment donné, il y a de « bonnes raisons » d'en parler d'une « certaine manière ». Ce qui est en cause ici, c'est bien la question de la déformation, du statut de la preuve quant aux représentations issues d'un contexte idéologique. Les représentations ainsi construites nous livrent en effet une structure interne du monde dont la validation se trouve aussi bien être objet de science que construction de vérité dans un projet de « connaissance » de ce monde. SUMMARY: The events of September 11, 2001 have for the first time demonstrated to a wider public what studies of war had brought to light already some time ago. Since the end of World War II, war between states has become rare. The vast majority of wars today represent acts of violence between a state and a non-state actor/group. As this kind of modern war takes place mainly in Africa and Asia, it has hardly been taken note of by the European and North American public. Yet this dominant form of war since the middle of the twentieth century repeals the state's monopoly on war that European states have largely been able to assert since the sixteenth century.
What does this repeal of a development, in the course of which the state became the bearer of the monopoly on legitimate violence (Max Weber), mean for historical research on war? The essay discusses this question taking two approaches: one asks for the significance of anthropological constants as regards the readiness of humans to wage war. Throughout the history of humankind, dehumanizing the enemy, for example, appears to have been an important presupposition to make humans ready to accept the killing of the other as legitimate. Rules of conduct that also applied and were observed during war are being invalidated against someone culturally different.
In a second approach, the essay asks for the change in conceptions and legitimization of war from the Middle Ages to the present. Particular attention is given to the question how the idea of the modern nation has changed the perceptions of war. The caesura in the legitimization of war that occurred around 1800, hitherto unsurpassed, has been put for the first time into a theoretical framework by Carl von Clausewitz. His theory, however, only applies to the kind of war that has become dominant in Europe and North America since the sixteenth century, i.e. the war between states. The wars of earlier times as well as the wars of the present do not conform to this type of war. To analyze them, interdisciplinary cooperation, in particular between historical and ethnological research, is necessary.

The filmmaker's death follows shortly after the death of the hero-narrator of his film.The aim of this study is to show that the production and reception of aesthetic goods, whether cinematographic or literary, can be analysed as creating spaces where politics in the broadest sense (sexual, family, public health policies.) is discussed, even though the political intentionality of the positions taken by the various actors does not appear to be required, either because it is carried out without any conscious will, or because the 'politically oriented' character of the positions taken is denied (in good or bad faith) by the artists themselves.The term "politically oriented" is used here in the sense given by Max Weber to describe certain "social activities": it applies when and as long as their purpose is to influence the direction ...

Although the study of citizenship has been an important development in contemporary sociology, the nature of rights has been largely ignored. The analysis of human rights presents a problem for sociology, in which cultural relativism and the fact-value distinction have largely destroyed the classical tradition of the natural-law basis for rights discourse. This critique of the idea of universal rights was prominent in the work of Marx, Durkheim and Weber. However, recent developments in the organisation of nation states, the globalisation of political issues, the transformation of family life, and changes in medical technology in relation to human reproduction have brought the question of human rights to the forefront of social and political debate. The paper argues that a sociology of rights is important, because there are obvious limitations to the idea of citizenship, which is based on membership of a nation state. Existing conceptualisations of citizenship require the supplement of rights theory. It is argued that sociology can ground the analysis of human rights in a concept of human frailty, especially the vulnerability of the body, in the idea of the precariousness of social institutions, and in a theory of moral sympathy. These three analytical supports - ontological frailty, social precariousness, and moral sympathy - are partly derived from the philosophical anthropology of Arnold Gehlen, from Ulrich Beck's concept of the risk society, and Max Scheler's phenomenology of sympathy. Emodied frailty is a human universal condition, which is compounded by the risky and precarious nature of social institutions. Human vulnerability can be contained or ameliorated by the institution of rights which protect human beings from this ontological uncertainty. From a sociological perspective, rights are social claims for institutionalised protection. However, it is because of collective sympathy for the plight of others that moral communities are created which support the institution of rights. This thesis not only offers a sociological version of traditional notions of natural or inalienable rights, but also attempts to provide a sociological alternative to enlightenment theories of social contract and individual rights.
Edmund Husserl's Crisis of the European Sciences prompts the search for an alternative to the development of nihilistic social systems which arise out of this situation. The breadth of the crisis problem manifesting itself in all realms of culture, including not only the natural sciences, but even art and music is first outlined, followed by a general definition which includes those found in Georg Simmel, Max Weber and Florian Znaniecki. Husserl's phenomenological and first depth analyses of the crisis, theoretically and historically tracing it back to its mathematical-natural scientific origins, are briefly considered until they break off around the problem of intersubjectivity, which he first discovered around the turn of the century. Bertrand Russell and Rudolf Carnap are then seen to attempt to dissolve this problem into a logical mystical intersubjectivity so as to maintain that there was never really a scientific crisis of the sciences and never one calling for such a notion. Finally, the works of Alfred Schutz and Aron Gurwitsch, as an extension of the original Husserlian intuition with their consideration of intersubjectivity now as `a mundane problem of the natural attitude' of the everyday social group, are taken up as a guide in this search for the non-nihilistic ( aliquid). Through an independent description of a `fiduciary attitude' (i.e. a trustful and not necessarily practical attitude), new light is thrown on the crisis as essentially a `bankruptcy of trust', and a brief attempt is then made to describe our most profound and foundational fiduciary engagement in that primordial `something' which is seen to be in the end a very ` human nature'. Upon this basis, and more specifically upon a fiduciary familiar milieu of social nature, I must simply have faith carrying hopes and fears in the world. This is the basis for a trustfully grounded science in everyday life. It may be developed by `well-informed actors' into a modern higher reflection involving a supreme respect for the unknown in the other and in nature, so as to give rise to an ethical science guided by faith in the future advancement of our one single international world.
Vorwort: "Eliten" und "Modernisierung" sind in den letzten Jahren geradezu Modebegriffe der politischen und journalistischen Sprache, der Umgangssprache überhaupt, geworden. Zugleich sind die sozialwissenschaftlichen Theorien, auf die diese Begriffe verweisen, unter massive und kategorische Kritik geraten, so daß ihre weitere Verwendung problematisch erscheint. Die hier zusammengetragenen Aufsätze, die allesamt auf Vorträge aus den beiden letzten Jahren zurückgehen, sind zunächst durch die Bemühung verbunden, den nach wie vor ergiebigen theoretischen Gehalt modernisierungs- und elitentheoretischer Konzepte durch analytische Eräzisierungen, durch ihre engere Verbindung sowie durch den Nachweis wichtiger Anwendungsbezüge zu verdeutlichen. Hierbei gilt als Leitgedanke, daß diese theoretischen Konzepte, in die auf Max Weber zurückgehende soziologische Denktradition gestellt, wichtige und geradezu unverzichtbare Analysezugänge zu zentralen Fragen des gesellschaftlichen Wandels, der Herrschaftsverfassung und der Strukturprobleme moderner Gesellschaften eröffnen. Im ersten Beitrag ("Anmerkungen zum Thema: Eliten und Modernisierung") wird zunächst eine Abgrenzung und Präzisierung der beiden Konzepte angestrebt. Modernisierung wird dabei als komplexer, vornehmlich auf Kultur- und Wertsphären sowie auf institutionelle Ordnungen bezogener, unter historisch-vergleichenden Gesichtspunkten zu betrachtender Rationalisierungsvorgang aufgefaßt. Die nähere Bestimmung des Elitenbegriffs erfolgt unter Bezugnahme auf Herrschafts- und Stellvertretungstheorien sowie unter Rückgriff auf die Kategorie des "subjektiven Kapitals". "Subjektives Kapital" meint materielle und ideelle Ressourcen, die besondere, in der Regel privilegierte Handlungschancen begründen. Als zentrale Elemente einer Erklärungsskizze spezifischer Modernisierungsverläufe werden die jeweils gegebenen Elitenkonfigurationen, die strukturellen und institutionellen Bedingungen, die den Möglichkeits- und Wahrscheinlichkeitshorizont des Gegen- und Miteinander-handelns maßgeblicher Eliten begrenzen, sowie die Realitätsdefinitionen und Entscheidungshandlungen der Eliten selbst betrachtet. Im Vordergrund stehen dabei vor allem jene Realitätsdeutungen und Entscheidungsprozesse der Eliten, die auf die Legitimierung oder Delegitimierung, Erhaltung oder Veränderung institutioneller Ordnungsformen abzielen, zumal institutionelle Ordnungen und die durch sie herbeigeführten Konfliktregelungen als entscheidende Weichensteller für den Verlauf von Modernisierungsprozessen zu betrachten sind. Im engeren Sinne auf die Rolle der Eliten in der "geistigen Ökonomie der Wirklichkeit" sowie auf die maßgebliche Bedeutung gegebener Elitenkonfigurationen für die Modernisierung beziehen sich die Ausführungen des zweiten Aufsatzes ("Eliten und Realitätsdeutung"). Als allgemeine These wird hierbei vertreten, daß die Chance der innovativen Bewältigung von Modernisierungsproblemen dann am ehesten gegeben ist, wenn erstens: durch institutionelle Vorkehrungen garantiert wird, daß alle Teileliten autonom und nach eigenen Rationalitätskriterien Handeln und Entscheiden können, und zweitens: ein zumindest minimaler Grundkonsens diesbezüglich besteht, daß fundamentale Wertkonflikte aus den politischen Auseinandersetzungen konkurrierender Eliten ausgeklammert bleiben. Letzteres schließt ein, daß wesentliche Fragen der kollektiven Identität weitgehend geklärt und unumstritten sind, aber auch, daß keine partikuläre Elitegruppe auf einem gesamtgesellschaftlich verbindlichen Wertanspruch und Deutungsmonopol besteht. Im dritten Beitrag, der Anwendungsmöglichkeiten des elitentheoretischen Ansatzes in der Strukturanalyse osteuropäischer Gesellschaften aufzeigt, wird denn auch die monopolistische politische Herrschaftsstruktur, die im Machtmonopol einer "ideologisch geeinten Elite" ihre Grundlage hat, als ein Haupthindernis der angestrebten Modernisierung dieser Gesellschaften herausgearbeitet. Denn, so die Hauptargumente, das ideologisch begründete Machtmonopol führt zu Realitätsverlusten in der Situationsdeutung, da einander korrigierende konkurrierende Wirklichkeitsinterpretationen ausgeschlossen werden, wie auch zur Vernachlässigung der Interessen breiter Bevölkerungsgruppen, da diese keine Möglichkeiten der Organisation und Repräsentation und demnach auch keine angemessene Vermittlung in die gesamtgesellschaftlichen Entscheidungsprozesse finden. In beiden Vorgängen, in der Realitätsdeutung wie in der Interessenrepräsentation, Interessenvermittlung und gesamtgesellschaftlichen Steuerung spielt die unrestringierte Elitenbildung und Elitenkonkurrenz eine wesentlich Rolle. Diese ist in ihrer Wirksamkeit stets zum Nachteil gesellschaftlicher Problembewältigungen eingeschränkt, wenn das Aufkommen und Handeln ideologisch abweichender und andere Interessenlagen vertretender Eliten repressiv unterbunden wird.
Survey data gathered for the project 'Social Structure and Economic Development,' during 1964 & 1965 by the author are used for a discussion of entrepreneurial origins & mobility in Chile. In particular, data from a sample of 69 medium-sized & dustry, drawn from the Industr Census of 1957, are utilized. 2 general propositions emerge from the analysis: (a) The transformations in soc structure accompanying incipient industr'ization, at least in Chile, have not had the effect of creating a fluid society characterized by high rates of SM & the ascendance of groups of 'new men' to places of prominence. (b) The stagnation-with-inflation crisis has had the effect of further rigidifying a soc structure historically characterized by wide soc inequalities & a highly uneven distribution of opportunities for econ & soc betterment. Econ theories, notably those of Max Weber & Reinhard Bendix, are quoted. On the basis of data on father's occup, educ, & wealth, the intergenerational mobility of Chilean industr managers was estimated in each case in which sufficient information was available. Of the 68 cases in which judgments were made, 56% were judged to evidence no mobility at all, 20% experienced a low degree, 15% a moderate, & 6% a high degree. There were 23 cases of lower soc origin & 25 of higher soc origin; the rest were in-between. The conclusion is reached that industr activity in Chile has represented a transfer of capital, personnel & function from 1 sector of the economy to another-a process of horizontal, not vertical, mobility. Comparisons between European & Latin Amer industr'ization are found inappropriate, since Chile & other Latin Amer countries have not passed through the same successive stages of industr'ization as European countries. The horizontal mobility found for Chile is considered typical for Latin Amer countries in general. An analysis of the industr sector in the 1950's & 60's follows. All data show the extreme limitation of interclass mobility in Chile. 'Chile has no fluid structure. No new SC's have arisen with incipient industr'ization.' Holding a relatively privileged & secure position & lacking a group consciousness & effective interest org, industr'ists have not been able to take an active role in influencing Chilean society. 4 Tables. The vitality of the social sciences in the United States has not prevented some of its most influential pioneers from becoming unread classics. A widespread preference for textbook treatment and up-to-theminute analysis plays its part; but if the reader does want to turn to the originals, he often finds that they are not readily available. Complete and scholarly editions of writers who pursued new directions of inquiry are rarer than might be supposed—even in their native language. The situation is particularly bad when it comes to foreign authors. A writer's theories and insights may be transmitted through one or two major works, while the rest of his output is ignored, so that his thoughts are analyzed in isolation, without benefit of the preliminary sketches, correspondence, and marginal studies that would give depth and suppleness to the interpretation. Until recently Rousseau and Tocqueville have been in this position; another case in point is Max Weber, ignorance of whose fertile theorizing has misled more than one commentator. Still another, and extreme, example of intellectual discontinuity is provided by Clausewitz. Much of his work has never been published; even in German most of it is out of print; little of it has ever been translated. The result has been the partial loss of a remarkable historical and theoretical achievement. To the American reader, in particular, Clausewitz rarely means more than the "philosopher of war," a famous name associated with one or two clichés backed up by little of substance. Repeated attempts to outline Clausewitz's thought, or to present the "essential Clausewitz" in the form of excerpts, have never been of more than doubtful value, if only because his methodology and dialectic are scarcely less interesting than the conclusions they reach. It would be pointless to attempt the impossible once again. On the other hand, a brief survey of Clausewitz's writings and of the literature concerning him may provide a useful introduction to his theories and to the manner in which for the past 150 years they have influenced the study and the waging of war.
