Abstract Although France and Germany are commonly classified as Bismarckian welfare regimes, they differ significantly in terms of family policy. For a long time, social and family policy in (West) Germany was focused on the male‐breadwinner model of married couples. This was based on the expectation that women, in particular married women with children, would withdraw from the labour market permanently, or at least temporarily. Whereas care by mothers was massively subsidized by state family policy, the expansion of the childcare infrastructure was neglected and progressed only very slowly compared to the situation in many other countries of Europe. France, on the contrary, is one of the European countries where childcare services are particularly widespread, giving mothers the option to combine paid work and motherhood. Nevertheless, significant changes are happening in both countries. Concern over the demographic trends and low birth rates (in particular in Germany) have refocused attention on family policy in recent years. In Germany, it has now become a key field of debate and policy, and new actors have appeared on the scene. This article proposes to compare the latest developments in both countries, highlighting the contribution of enterprises and social partners to work–life balance, re‐analysing the different types of familialism characterizing both countries.

Malaysia is witnessing a significant impact of drug use among its population which has seen an upward trend in the last decade. Family members of drug users and drug abusers have borne the heaviest brunt and therefore, this research examines how the family member cope with the latter's' addiction. Eighteen (18) family members of drug users in Penang, Malaysia were interviewed in this qualitative research. Primary data gleaned from these in-depth interviews were analysed, and findings showed that family members adopted many different coping mechanism and strategies, namely emotional, avoidance, controlling, inactive, assertive and supportive in dealing with challenges of intra family drug addiction. External and internal resources as well as support systems were also accessed. Specifically, close relatives and counsellors from National Anti-drugs Agency were approached for emotional support and practical guidance. This research found affected family members who formed self-help and support groups as part of their coping strategies were able to discover meaningful and useful ways to deal with the destructive effects of drug abuse. Government and non-governmental agencies also assisted affected family members in offering practical help. However, it is important both government and non-governmental agencies play a more proactive role. The National Anti-drugs Agency in particular, it is recommended provide tailor made programmes and coping skills in addressing these traumatic situations and enable families deal with this destructive habit of addiction.

What are the effects of positive and negative experiences in both the vocational and relationship careers of youngsters and their parents on adolescent well-being. Data from the Dutch national panel study USAD (Utrecht Study of Adolescent Development) were used; this is a study of developmental
processes as they occur in the life course of young people during the 1990s. A quarter of the total variance of the variable adolescent well-being is found at family level. Individual vocational and relationship factors appear to have significant long-term effects on adolescent well-being.
The same holds true for relationship problems in the family, especially for girls. Vocational family factors and parents' personal characteristics are not important as predictors of adolescent well-being.

In Brazil, some see intensive, large-scale production of sugarcane-based ethanol, based on a model of capital and land concentration, as a threat to the survival of family farming. Family farmers are increasingly under pressure to sell or rent land to mills where sugarcane monoculture is expanding. In this context, the government is working to formulate or change public policies in order to support farmer livelihoods in sugarcane growing regions. The present study is based on research conducted in the municipality of Ipiranga de Goiás, Goiás State, Brazil. It employs the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method, with participation of stakeholders at federal, state and municipal levels, to support public policy decision-making addressing family farming. The stakeholders prioritize environmental and economic benefits as the most important criteria requiring the attention of policy makers. Also, stakeholders agree that diversification of production is the most appropriate alternative for strengthening family farming. The AHP approach can be the starting point in the formulation of public policies. The approach helps ensure transparency, and it purposefully includes family farmer points of view. Policies derived from this process, therefore, may have a higher likelihood of being supported and accepted by farmers.

Despite the ubiquitous use of social media platforms by people of all ages, there is limited synthesis of evidence on their effect on family connectedness. This systematic review assesses the quantitative evidence around relationship between social media use and family connectedness. We searched articles published between January 2010 and April 2020. Nine of the 14 included studies examined the effect of social media on parent-child communication, while the rest explored the effect on broader family relationships. Overall evidence is mixed, highlighting some aspects of social media use that may strengthen family connectedness, while others that may negatively impact meaningful interactions within families. This review illustrates the complex nature of this research domain with limited consensus on how to measure family connectedness in context of social media use. We discuss the limitations of the studies and the greater need for high-quality research in the fast-paced world of social media.

Nonparametric density estimates and a generalized decomposition technique are
employed to explore the role that changes in family structure in the 1980s and 1990s
played in observed shifts in the U.S. distribution of family economic well-being. Single-parent
families are identified as playing a key role in shaping the incidence and distribution
of economic well-being below two times the poverty line. Most notably,
the increased incidence of persons in families below one-half the poverty line can be
traced to both an increase in the share of single-parent families and an increase in
the propensity of single-parent families to reside at these very low levels of economic
well-being. Decompositions further trace the increased incidence of single-parent
families below one-half the poverty line to those without a working adult and those
without a head with a high-school degree.

For people on the move, family reunification has become a major 'channel' to Europe, and the 'right to family' is a widely recognized principle in international human rights protection and domestic legislations. Yet in practice exercising this 'right' is often difficult and migration buraucracies leave applicants unsure not only of the outcome of their applications but of the criteria that are relied on in the decisions. In this article we analyze this dynamic via the case study of Finland and a close analysis of 253 appeals on family reunification applications at the Administrative Court of Helsinki between 2003 and 2014. Our sample includes all decisions that mention 'DNA,' which has become a routinely utilized biotechnological tool in family reunification applications internationally. Our analysis focuses particularly on the 51 cases in which DNA testing has confirmed the existence of biological family ties but the applications have, nevertheless, been rejected. This article is contextualized in scholarship analyzing the recent spread of biotechnological tools and biometrics in immigration management. Simultaneously we discuss the quest for 'information,' 'certainty' and 'truth' that characterize family reunification applications. COVID-19 emerged in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, and since then has impacted work, family, and social life of people around the globe. The working community had to face difficulties and barriers due to increasing job insecurity and changing working environments during the pandemic. Employees around the world have experienced sudden, significant changes in their work and family roles. This study aims to examine the impact of COVID-19 on married women's work-family balance during the lockdown in Sri Lanka. The research problem of the study is: Does the working woman maintain the balance of work-family environment? By applying the mixed research methodology, we draw on the quantitative data by surveying married women working from home to understand and analyse their adaptability to work from home during the lockdown within two months (from May to July 2020). In addition, in-depth interviews were conducted to gather qualitative data of the study selecting the purposive sampling method. The sample consisted of women with diversity in age, employment, and educational level. A majority of women reported working for long hours without any leave during the lockdown period. This study revealed that 57% of women could manage their household work and job-related work during the period, in contrast, only 43% of respondents could not do so. Even though there were several difficulties faced by married women, they successfully managed both, i.e., their job-related work and their family chores. While 43% of the respondents belonged to nuclear families, 57% of them belonged to extended families. Eighty-three percent of respondents reported high levels of support from husbands for housework and office work. In conclusion, although Sri Lankan women encounter significant difficulties, they are inclined to maintain a balance and adaptability between work-family tasks.
