Considers the concept of "northernness" as a construction of identity through analyzing several separate concepts. The first is the work of the composer Glenn Gould. Gould considered the psychological aspects of the North through his piano works & radio documentaries. He communicated the idea that the North is an area of solitude & unimpeded creativity. A separate aspect is the idea of using the North as an alternative construction during the Middle Ages in northern Russia. In Russia, North has been considered a refuge & a place for spiritual odysseys. This is an alternative to the traditional Russian community being based in the semi-Asian Muscovy. A third aspect is the state of Finland. Although Finland is modern in many respects, it is also peripheral, a borderland. It is characterized as being northern, backwooded, & politically correct. Finally is the use of North for a virtual construction of regionality in Europe during the 1990s. The North is seen as an alternative to East-West frictions. Also, the North has a cultural & political permissiveness that can be appealing. R. Larsen

The paper deals with the problem of creating the sociological school of law in the history of Russian political and legal thought. Based on the analysis of both Russian and foreign legal literature, the study shows several important aspects of genesis and development of sociological interpretations of law in views of the classic legal sociologists, including the Russian sociological school of law which is considered as an independent and original phenomenon. The analysis of the legal views of the representatives of the sociological school of law in Russia and modern research demonstrate that understanding the real meaning of the relevant interpretations of law in the works of such representatives is often accompanied by irregularities and modifications that are largely related to the problem of interpreting the specific nature of the sociological approach to the law as a whole.

Russia has recently strengthened its diplomatic relations with its North-East Asian neighbours -- China, Japan, North and South Korea. But without much more reform at home, Russia will be neither attractive as a partner nor live up to its full potential. Sino-Russian detente has effectively stalled, although Russian arms sales to Beijing are of growing concern to the West. Russia remains excluded from the great-power politics surrounding the Korean Peninsula. Russo-Japanese relations are improving, but remain bedevilled by Russia's domestic problems.
