The main purpose of this work is to define the strategic criteria and objectives for sustainable forest management and aggregate the preferences of stakeholders in a Mediterranean region, using AHP and Goal Programming. Area of study: Valencian Community (Spain). Material and Methods: Firstly, we identified forest stakeholders and structured a decision hierarchy. Then a workshop was carried out to test and validate the proposed criteria and objectives, as well as a survey to determine social preferences. Secondly, another survey was conducted amongst experts to prioritize action plans. Main results: Stakeholders preferences gave the greatest importance to the environmental criteria (hydrological regulation and erosion, climate change mitigation and biodiversity) with an average weight of 40%. Social criteria (employment, recreational activities and landscape) had a weight of 38% and 22% the economic criteria case (wood, hunting and fishing, livestock, renewable energies, rural tourism and mining). The results showed that new products and services such as tourism, renewable energies, landscape, hydrological regulation and erosion control, biodiversity or climate change mitigation are very relevant objectives. We also prioritized action plans comparing them with the distribution of the administration budget. [EN] Universities are showing a growing interest in becoming green institutions and improving campus open space management. Well-designed urban landscapes guided by green criteria integrate eco-friendly infrastructure which may be effective in facing urban challenges in the context of climate change. Student preferences and uses of campus outdoor environment should draw the attention of campus landscape planners. This study aims to analyse how the university community perceives landscape services provided by the Spanish Universitat Politecnica de Valencia's campus open space. An online questionnaire was sent to the university community to check its opinions, level of satisfaction, and their demands related to the current situation of the outdoor areas. Campus open spaces with different urban green infrastructure have a high potential to provide cultural, provisioning, and regulation landscape services. Respondents perceive the main benefits provided by campus open spaces to be that they are a place to relax, meet friends, and pass through. Their needs related to the welfare of outdoor areas and their preferences differ according to age, occupation, and time spent at the campus. There is a need for a better understanding of the primary role of macronutrients in Aleppo pine stock quality and for producing larger nutrient-loaded stock, which may be challenging for inland nurseries. The influence of nursery location and fertilization on nursery culture, growth, allometry and seedling quality of Aleppo pine was studied in seedlings cultivated over the 2006 growing year. Fertilization treatments considered how a K enrichment performed over common programs currently being practiced and divided into three levels of K/N ratio: 0.63-0.89 (normal), 1.81-1.89 (high), and 2.25-2.53 (very high). Results showed that fertilization had a minor effect on seedling growth and allometry in comparison with location, which was the governing factor. However, fertilizing treatments significantly affected final seedling attributes, which has its origin on the early treatment differences that were kept up to the end of culture. Higher nutrient supply treatments produced the highest nutrient concentration in seedlings but they were associated with lower fertilization efficiencies. Fertilizer efficiency was approximately twofold in the coastal nursery for the three macronutrients, although concentration was higher in the inland nursery due to lower seedling growth. [EN] During the last three decades, like many other Mediterranean states, Spain has intensively promoted the modernization of irrigation, focusing mainly on the introduction of pressurized irrigation systems. Following 30 years of investment, a shift in irrigation policies is needed to solve some of the deficiencies in this modernization process and to incorporate new measures to cope with upcoming challenges generated by international markets, climate change and other social and economic processes. This paper describes and analyses the results of participatory research carried out with the water user associations in the autonomous region of Valencia, in order to define post-modernization irrigation policies. A survey and 24 local workshops involving 304 water user associations were conducted during the irrigation season of 2018 in order to form an assessment of the sector and design new irrigation policies. The results show that after 30 years of important investment, the obsolescence of the infrastructure has become the current main priority, making farmers dependent on public subsidies. [EN] Higher education is continuously evolving to keep up with the challenges posed by the introduction of information and communication technologies (ICT) to education. In this sense, distance learning is booming, with an increasing number of higher education students taking advantage of the flexibility remote learning provides. The School of Agricultural Engineering and Environment (ETSIAMN) of Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) has been gradually incorporating ICT tools in its bachelor and master degrees for the last two decades. As a result, many college students and university instructors are familiar with ICT techniques. However, the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis has put distance learning in the spotlight like never before, forcing students, faculty, and staff to adapt to the new situation with hardly any preparation time. For that reason, it is convenient to analyse in depth the results and impact of the teaching and evaluation methodologies developed and applied during this critical period, as a way to detect and amend potential inefficiencies in the learning process. The specific goal of this study was to analyse the teaching period during the COVID-19 crisis in ETSIAMN, which covered the spring semester of the academic year 2019-2020. To this purpose, 114 instructors and 274 students were surveyed in July 2020, belonging to four bachelor degrees (agricultural and biological engineering; forestry engineering; food engineering; and biotechnology), and three master degrees (agricultural and biological engineering; forestry engineering, and oenology). Regarding the experimental design for the survey, three main blocks were identified: the first block corresponds to teaching methodologies, comparing students and faculty preferences for distance lecturing; the second block focuses on evaluation modalities and exam configurations; and the final block centers on the difficulties found by both students and lecturers along the adaptation process from conventional to distance teaching. Los residuos de las actividades industriales (agroforestales, extractivas, construcción y demolición, etc.) constituyen un importante problema medioambiental en las sociedades modernas. Este escenario ha provocado el desarrollo de un marco normativo a nivel europeo, nacional y autonómico, con el objetivo de fomentar el desarrollo sostenible e implementar el modelo de economía circular. Este contexto "Hacia una economía circular: un programa de cero residuos para Europa" cobra especial relevancia el sector de la construcción y especialmente la industria cementera y del hormigón, que se han caracterizado tradicionalmente por ser actividades poco respetuosas con el medio ambiente. En este sentido, indicar que, en las últimas décadas estos sectores han tratado de incorporar a su modelo productivo residuos procedentes de la actividad industrial, tratando de reducir el consumo de recursos naturales, coste energético de la extracción de los mismos y las emisiones de CO₂. El objetivo de esta tesis es estudiar la viabilidad de reutilizar las cenizas de biomasa en la fabricación de nuevos materiales eco-eficientes de base cemento en el ámbito de la ingeniería civil. That situation has prompted the enactment of new Europe-, nation- and region-wide legislation that seeks to further sustainable development and institute a circular economy. In the context of 'Towards a circular economy, a zero waste programme for Europe', the construction and especially the cement industries acquire particular importance as businesses traditionally characterised by their scant respect for the environment. [EN] In this contribution, we analyze the results of a number of thermal response test (TRT) experiments performed during several years at the same location at our university campus in Valencia (Spain), a permeable saturated soil area with possible groundwater flow conditions. A combination of different heat injection rates, TRT operation times of up to 32 days, and various methods for parameter estimation of ground thermal properties have been applied to study their influence on the result and accuracy of TRTs. Our main objective has been to experimentally quantify the influence of groundwater flow heat advection using moving infinite and finite line-source theories, as well as to analyze the influence of factors such as test duration, sensor accuracy, and external thermal influences. We have shown that the traditionally used infinite and finite line-source models, as well as the moving line-source models, can accurately represent experimental temperature evolution, but that there are many caveats regarding the significance parameters extracted and its reproducibility and stability. Current advances in data management are making Smart Farming grow exponentially as data have become the key element in modern agriculture to help producers with critical decision-making. [ES] A pesar de la existencia de una gran variedad de métodos basados en indicadores orientados a evaluar la sosteniblidad de los sistemas agrarios, sólo unos pocos abordan el análisis de forma integral desde un enfoque de complejidad (Gingrich et al., 2018; Stylianou et al., 2020). Así, el concepto de agrosistema permite articular procesos sociales, ambientales y económicos en el análisis de los sistemas agrarios (González-Molina et al., 2020 y Marco et al., 2019;2020), siendo el punto de partida para la introdución del enfoque de sistemas complejos. Tomando como ámbito de estudio la comarca de l¿Horta Nord (València) y una muestra predefinida de entrevista semiestructurada a 4 explotaciones agrícolas, se propone un análisis socioecológico de síntesis (Muiño, 2015) a partir de las herramientas teóricas y metodológicas del campo del metabolismo social, con un triple objetivo de caracterización de las variedades agrometabólicas, el análisis de procesos en despliegue y la observación de las limitaciones teóricas y metodológicas en el análisis. El modelo construido de tipo snap-shot cuenta con 15 indicadores cuantitativos y el análisis de 5 códigos cualitativos para el análisis de 4 procesos de reproducción y 4 procesos de producción de 3 bienes-fondo (social, natural y económico). Los resultados apuntan a una fosilización de agrosistemas, coincidiendo con las tesis de Aguilera et al. (2015) y González-Molina et al. (2020), baja eficiencia de insumos, una producción social divergente de medios sociotécnicos de producción no físicos (MSn) y un sostenimiento parcial e informal no monetario de medios sociotécnicos de producción físicos (MSf) como procesos principales en despliegue. In order to assess the education at the bachelor level, generation 2001-2006, of the University of the Autonomous Regions of the Nicaraguan Caribbean Coast -URACCAN - Las Minas Campus, the professional performance was studied. Las Minas Campus is located in the Pedro Joaquín Chamorro neighborhood, sector No. 3 of Siuna Municipality, North Atlantic Autonomous Region. Las Minas Campus has three university extensions in the municipalities of Rosita, Bonanza and Waslala. 208 professionals from a total of 251 of this generation were surveyed. 57% corresponds to the female sex; 11% belongs to the Miskitu and Mayangnas indigenous peoples; 89% of mestizo people who constitute a majority and whose average age is 36 to 41 years. The majority is located in Siuna municipality and represents 56.3%; in Rosita 28.5%, in Bonanza 10.8% and in smaller proportion in the municipalities of Mulukukú, Waslala and Nindirí with 1.9%, 1.3% and 0.6 respectively. Regarding employability, it can be affirmed that 91% of the graduates are employed in institutions of the government sector. Those in the Agroforestry Engineering career, followed by a degree in Social Sciences with a mention in Local Development are the best paid people monetarily. ; Con el objeto de valorar la formación en el nivel de licenciatura, generación 2001-2006, de la Universidad de las Regiones Autónomas de la Costa Caribe Nicaragüense –URACCAN – Recinto Universitario Las Minas, se estudió el desempeño profesional. El Recinto Las Minas, se ubica en el barrio "Pedro Joaquín Chamorro", sector No. 3 del Municipio de Siuna, Región Autónoma Atlántico Norte. El Recinto Las Minas, posee tres extensiones universitarias en los municipios de Rosita, Bonanza y Waslala. Se encuestaron a 208 profesionales de un total de 251 de esta generación. El 57% corresponde al sexo femenino; el 11% pertenece a los pueblos indígenas miskitus y mayangnas; 89% de personas mestizas que constituyen mayoría y cuya edad promedio es de 36.41 años. La mayoría se localizan en el municipio de Siuna, y representan el 56.3%; en Rosita el 28.5%, en Bonanza el 10.8% y en menor proporción los municipios de Mulukukú, Waslala y Nindirí con el 1.9%, 1.3% y 0.6 respectivamente. Referente a la ocupabilidad se puede afi rmar que el 91% de las personas graduadas se encuentran empleadas y son asalariadas en instituciones del sector estatal. Las personas mejor remuneradas monetariamente son los de la carrera de Ingeniería Agroforestal, seguida por la licenciatura en Ciencias Sociales con mención en Desarrollo Local.

[EN] This work focuses on the situation of the technological transition to new technologies in drip irrigation in the Valencian Community (Spain). The study covers the last decade with data from interviews to managers of Irrigation Communities in 2010 and 2018. We analyze the main technological problems in seven topics: (i) Catchment & Pumping; (ii) Storage & Regulation; (iii) Treatment & Filtering; (iv) Transport & Distribution; (v) Maneuver, Regulation & Protection; (vi) Automation; (vii) Theft and Vandalism. We also have researched the influence of the performance of the Automation system, the presence of a technician in the Irrigation Community and the use of sensors or climatic data. Results show that problems related to technological maintenance of filtering systems or automation are very common and important and they are more important in large Irrigation Communities. We have also observed that mostly large ICs are using sensors or climatic data for their irrigation schedule. We can conclude that their current situation is focused in the daily maintenance of technological problems, inherited from the first modernization processes at the beginning of 21st century. En el presente documento se detalla el dimensionado de una estación depuradora de aguas residuales, mediante un tratamiento blando, para el municipio de Antigüedad de Cerrato, en la provincia de Palencia, con el objetivo de conseguir un vertido de agua a cauce acorde a las exigencias legislativas actuales. La línea de tratamiento consistirá en tres fases diferenciadas, las cuales serán: un pretratamiento, basado en un desbaste y un desarenado, un tratamiento primario, llevado a cabo mediante un Tanque Imhoff y como tratamiento secundario, un humedal artificial subsuperficial horizontal y a continuación un humedal artificial superficial, como método para la mejora del efluente. Finalmente, el agua debidamente depurada, será vertida al Arroyo del Prado. Para evitar el consumo energía en el transporte del agua, se emplazarán todos los equipos a favor de pendiente, para que el agua circule por gravedad. Previamente a la explicación y dimensionado de los equipos, se hará un descripción de las características de la zona, aquellas que determinarán donde y por qué se ubicará finalmente la estación de tratamiento y la elección del tipo de tratamiento. [EN] Producing food in a sustainable way is becoming very challenging today due to the lack of skilled labor, the unaffordable costs of labor when available, and the limited returns for growers as a result of low produce prices demanded by big supermarket chains in contrast to ever-increasing costs of inputs such as fuel, chemicals, seeds, or water. Robotics emerges as a technological advance that can counterweight some of these challenges, mainly in industrialized countries. However, the deployment of autonomous machines in open environments exposed to uncertainty and harsh ambient conditions poses an important defiance to reliability and safety. Consequently, a deep parametrization of the working environment in real time is necessary to achieve autonomous navigation. This article proposes a navigation strategy for guiding a robot along vineyard rows for field monitoring. Given that global positioning cannot be granted permanently in any vineyard, the strategy is based on local perception, and results from fusing three complementary technologies: 3D vision, lidar, and ultrasonics. Several perception-based navigation algorithms were developed between 2015 and 2019. [EN] The Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030 of United Nations is made up of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that humanity will have to meet by 2030. In achieving the SDGs, green urban areas (GUA) play a fundamental role at the local level as they provide recreational and bioclimatic regulatory functions and act as a carbon sink, as well. Specifically, the GUAs contribute directly to three SDGs: SDG 11 Sustainable cities and communities, SDG 13 Climate Action and SDG 15 Life on land. This paper evaluates direct contribution of GUA to this SDGs with high spatial resolution in the case study of the city of Valencia (Spain). The evaluation carried out has made it possible to make a diagnosis of the quantity and accessibility of GUA at sub-neighbourhood level. The results for SDG 11 show that only 9.23% of the population do not have desirable access to GUA and 2.73% live in areas without easy walking distance access to GUA. On the other hand, the evaluation of SDG 15 shows that each inhabitant has at their disposal 10 m2 of GUA, below the average of cities of more than 250,000 inhabitants in Spain. The high spatial resolution of the evaluation has also made it possible to identify the city areas with the worst access to GUA and the least amount of GUA per inhabitant. In consequence, the results allow determining zones with high potential to improve. Additionally, the quantification of the CO2 fixed by the GUA carried out for the evaluation of SDG 13, shows that the fixed carbon is equivalent to 0.04% of total gross GHG emissions of the city and is 36% higher than the total GHG emissions of the annual fuel consumption of the total fleet in the city. [EN] Purpose: The uncontrolled discharge of phosphorus into aquatic environment leads to the deterioration of the water bodies. Additionally, the agricultural crops present inside the La Albufera de Valencia Natural Park, rice fields mainly, have a high social and environmental value. However, there is a conflict between private interests (farmers) and public interest in the management of agro-waste produced by them. Nowadays, the option used by the farmers is the uncontrolled burning in the own field. The ashes generated during the combustion process could be used to remove phosphorus loading in water bodies of the Natural Park, contributing to its recovery. Methods: Adsorption experiments were carried out in batch mode by using different concentration s (5-100 mgP L-1) of sodium phosphate dibasic (Na2HPO4) placed in 100 mL stoppered conical flask with 50 mL of synthetic wastewater and different amounts of adsorbent, during the selected time (5 days). Adsorption studies were performed with doses varying from 5 to 24 g L-1. After finishing the adsorption experiments, the solution was filtered through glass microfiber filter (1.2 ¿m). Results: The adsorption capacity varies for rice straw ash from 31.91% up to 97.48% and rice straw ash with HCl from 17.49% up to 89.04%. An increase in temperature or dosage had a positive effect in the removal capacity, increasing its adsorption. Removal process of phosphorus was endothermic.
