AbstractThe river Ganga originates from Gangotri and travels approximate 1,300 km to Vindhyachal, bypassing through a series of dams. Water quality parameters including temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, chloride, biological oxygen demand, dissolved organic matter, and nutrients were studied from various centers of the river Ganga from Gangotri to Vindhyachal (24 centers). Specific conductivity increased gradually from Maneri above barrage area and reached maximum at Kanpur as the river receives industrial and domestic effluents near Kanpur. Allahabad, Haridwar, and Vindhyachal sampling points were found to be affected by anthropogenic influences. A chloride as well as Myxophyceae were maximum at Kanpur, which indicated that maximum organic pollution at Kanpur plankton population and composition were much more affected by temperature and nutrients than by the construction of dams. However, the pattern of release of water affected the accumulation of nutrients in surface water, which impacted the quality of planktonic fauna and flora. The upper stretch was dominated by diatoms and the middle stretch by green and blue‐green algae as the accumulation of nutrients exhibited eutrophic conditions. Near the source, diatoms like Eunotia, Achanthes, Cymbella, Diatoma, Tabellaria were found to be dominant but as river moves toward downstream, species of Synedra, Melosira, Nitzchia, and Cyclotella became abundant. The study revealed how water quality deteriorated by the construction of each dam. Therefore, when making policy for a dam on any river it is important to maintain at least one stream of the original water flow. The whole river should not be blocked at any point/place or at least 50% of original water should flow continuously to sustain the biodiversity and quality of water, otherwise after traveling a few kilometers through dams, a river will lose its originality.

This decline is 21±5% larger than that from 2015 to 2019. We relate this reduction to two of the government's actions: the announcement of the first report in each province and the date of a province's lockdown. Both actions are associated with nearly the same magnitude of reductions. Our analysis offers insights into the unintended environmental and economic consequences through reduced economic activities. Abstract
The impacts of wildfires along the wildland urban interface (WUI) on atmospheric particulate concentrations and composition are an understudied source of air pollution exposure. To assess the residual impacts of the 2021 Marshall Fire (Colorado), a wildfire that predominantly burned homes and other human-made materials, on homes within the fire perimeter that escaped the fire, we performed a combination of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) filter sampling and chemical analysis, indoor dust collection and chemical analysis, community scale PurpleAir PM2.5 analysis, and indoor particle number concentration measurements. Following the fire, the chemical speciation of dust collected in smoke-affected homes in the burned zone showed elevated concentrations of the biomass burning marker levoglucosan (medianlevo = 4147 ng g−1), EPA priority toxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (median Σ16PAH = 1859.3 ng g−1), and metals (median Σ20Metals = 34.6 mg g−1) when compared to samples collected in homes outside of the burn zone 6 months after the fire. As indoor dust particles are often resuspended and can become airborne, the enhanced concentration of hazardous metals and organics within dust samples may pose a threat to human health. Indoor airborne particulate organic carbon (median = 1.91 μg m−3), particulate elemental carbon (median = .02 μg m−3), and quantified semi-volatile organic species in PM2.5 were found in concentrations comparable to ambient air in urban areas across the USA. Particle number and size distribution analysis at a heavily instrumented supersite home located immediately next to the burned area showed indoor particulates in low concentrations (below 10 μg m−3) across various sizes of PM (12 nm–20 μm), but were elevated by resuspension from human activity, including cleaning.

INTRODUCTION: The WHO recommends community mobilisation with women's groups practising participatory learning and action (PLA) to improve neonatal survival in high-mortality settings. This intervention has not been evaluated at scale with government frontline workers. METHODS: We did a pragmatic cluster non-randomised controlled trial of women's groups practising PLA scaled up by government front-line workers in Jharkhand, eastern India. Groups prioritised maternal and newborn health problems, identified strategies to address them, implemented the strategies and evaluated progress. Intervention coverage and quality were tracked state-wide. Births and deaths to women of reproductive age were monitored in six of Jharkhand's 24 districts: three purposively allocated to an early intervention start (2017) and three to a delayed start (2019). We monitored vital events prospectively in 100 purposively selected units of 10 000 population each, during baseline (1 March 2017–31 August 2017) and evaluation periods (1 September 2017–31 August 2019). The primary outcome was neonatal mortality. RESULTS: We identified 51 949 deliveries and conducted interviews for 48 589 (93.5%). At baseline, neonatal mortality rates (NMR) were 36.9 per 1000 livebirths in the early arm and 39.2 in the delayed arm. Over 24 months of intervention, the NMR was 29.1 in the early arm and 39.2 in the delayed arm, corresponding to a 24% reduction in neonatal mortality (adjusted OR (AOR) 0.76, 95% CI 0.59 to 0.98), including 26% among the most deprived (AOR 0.74, 95% CI 0.57 to 0.95). Twenty of Jharkhand's 24 districts achieved adequate meeting coverage and quality. In these 20 districts, the intervention saved an estimated 11 803 newborn lives (min: 1026–max: 20 527) over 42 months, and cost 41 international dollars per life year saved.
