Abstract
THE ECONOMIC AND EMPLOYMENT PICTURE SINCE 1978 HAS LED STUDENTS INTO "BREAD AND BUTTER" COURSES AND AWAY FROM LESS PRACTICAL COURSES SUCH AS HUMAN RIGHTS. CYNICISM REGARDING ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE HAS REPLACED THE PEACE CORPS MENTALITY OF AN EALIER ERA. YET THE CARTER ADMINISTRATION'S EMPHASIS ON HUMAN RIGHTS HAS MADE THE SUBJECTS A LEGITIMATE ACADEMIC TOPIC AND HAS INCREASED INTEREST IN THE TEACHING OF HUMAN RIGHTS.
