The development of female consciousness in the contemporary literature of mainland China

Abstract
The Third Plenary Session of the Chinese Communist Party's Central Committee in December 1978 marked a turning point in mainland China's literature as well as politics. The call to seek truth from facts and take practice as the sole criterion of truth in politics allowed writers to cease serving the Maoist personality cult and concentrate on portraying ordinary people. Women became a legitimate subject of literature. With this change in direction, a new generation of women writers such as Shen Jung, Chang Chieh, Chang Hsin-hsin, Chang K'ang-k'ang and Wang An-i. The article discusses the development of female consciousness in the contemporary literature. (DÜI-Sen)
