According to the United Nations Population Fund (2020), half of the world's population live in cities, and the number is estimated to rise to 75% by 2050. Although urbanization is seen as a major challenge from a health point of view, the development of urban wellness tourism offering would ideally benefit both tourists and locals. The growth rate of wellness tourism during the years 2015–2017 was almost twice as fast as global economic growth. Holistic wellness refers to the balanced elements of body, mind and spirit. This study argues that many European city destinations could provide the holistic wellness elements to their visitors. Tourism destinations continue competing with each other in a globalised marketplace, even more post-Covid-19. As a result, cities will invest considerable resources in their marketing activities and place branding. By recognizing and highlighting wellness tourism offering in their marketing, some urban Destination Management Organisations (DMOs) could stand out in this growing competition and get their share of wellness tourism growth. This study examines, which elements contributing to holistic wellness are currently being displayed on the visit.com websites of selected urban DMOs (N = 32) in the European Union. This is done using qualitative content analysis methodology. The findings indicate that there are several European cities that already display elements of urban wellness in their marketing. Along with the European Union's (EU) increased interest in a common European culture and past, narration as a means to create and communicate about them has gained new momentum. By applying the Discourse-Mythological Approach, I explore how the EU narrates the story of the origins of EU Europe in two recent EU heritage/history initiatives. The analysis brought out three storylines in the mythmaking of EU Europe. While the first storyline emphasizes temporal continuity, shared cultural roots, and preservation and transmission of a common legacy, the second focuses on the idea of a break and a rebirth of a civic/political community. The third storyline highlighting founding figures and key heroes functions as a mediator between these two narratives. The founding myths seek to justify the political aims of the EU, that is, strengthening European unification and multilevel integration, and presenting these aims as choiceless and morally and ethically legitimated. ; peerReviewed
Chiara Valentini analysoi tutkimuksessaan Euroopan Unionin viestintää eri yleisöjensä kanssa kahdessa EU:n jäsenmaassa vuosina 2001-2006. Valentini tarkasteli erityisesti Euroopan komissiota ja - Useiden maiden kansalaisille suunnatussa EU:n ohjelmia koskevassa viestinnässä tulisi kiinnittää huomiota paikallisiin ja kulttuurisiin prioriteetteihin. Kaksisuuntaisen viestinnän kehittäminen on mahdollista taustatutkimuksen avulla, Valentini suosittaa.Valentini huomasi, että EU-instituutiot ovat alkaneet laajemmin toteuttaa pr-käytäntöjä viestintänsä kehittämisessä vasta viime vuosina. Pr:stä on tullut erittäin tärkeä strategisen johtamisen väline ja siksi julkisten organisaatioiden tulisi ohjata resursseja sekä organisaation sisäiseen, että sen ulkopuolelle suuntautuvaan viestintään. On tärkeää, että organisaatiot oppivat ajattelemaan globaalisti ja toimimaan paikallisesti. Organisaatioiden tulee tarjota paikallisia tarpeita varten räätälöityjä palveluja, joita laatiessa on pidetty globaalit trendit mielessä. Tämä vaikuttaa julkisten organisaatioiden toimintaan siten, että niiden täytyy strategisessa suunnittelussaan huomioida myös maahanmuuttajat, Valentini sanoo. ; This study is an analysis of EU information and communication policies developed from 2001 to 2006 and their possible impacts on the communication strategies of two member states, namely Finland and Italy. In particular this investigation focuses on how EU directives affected the communication activities of these two member states toward their national publics. The public organizations analysed were the European Commission and its DG Communication, the Finnish and Italian representations of the European Commission and Finnish and Italian EU offices at regional and local levels. A multi-level (European versus national) and comparative (Finnish versus Italian) approach resting on public communication and public relations theories, but also including some of the theories on public diplomacy, community relations and marketing communications, was adopted. The methodologies applied were based on the triangulation of different techniques such as content and document analyses, qualitative analyses of an online survey and of face-to-face interviews, and a meta-analysis of existing public opinion surveys. The multi-method study is in five parts: a study of six EU documents on information and communication policies and their implementation in member states; an analysis of EU officers' activities and their communication strategies at the local level; a study of different Eurobarometer surveys on citizens' EU perceptions; an investigation of EU media relations and an examination of some EU information campaigns. The results of this research revealed a similar trend with respect to EU communication strategies both in Finland and in Italy. During the period 2001 and 2006 EU communication strategies were not sufficiently tailored to the needs of national publics and they mostly were one-way-symmetrical communications. The stated aim of EU policies on information and communication was a decentralisation of tasks and functions which was not completely delivered in terms of local involvement in communication decisions. The effects on improving citizens' EU perceptions and on a positive EU image and trust were rather low and journalists' opinions of the interest of the European Union in establishing mutual and beneficial media relations scored very poorly in both countries
Abstract My thesis focuses on the incorporation of Hyperboreans, a mythical classical race, into the prevailing Gothic or Geatic narrative of national history in seventeenth and eighteenth century Swedish historiography. The beatific Hyperboreans were identified with ancient Swedes to emphasise that the Gothic ancestors of Sweden's rulers had not been mere mediaeval barbarians. The most extreme proponents of this Hyperborean research tradition claimed that a high culture had thrived in Sweden before classical antiquity. They asserted that traces of this highly-developed northern civilisation could be found in the Bible, classical writings and mediaeval historiography, as well as the domestic antiquities such as runestones and Old Norse writings. By close-reading published and unpublished writings of historians and antiquaries, I examined the overarching and shared distinctive features within this Hyperborean research tradition. This involved an analysis of the main content of this research tradition in its learned, mostly Western European historiographical setting. I focused especially on understanding the Hyperborean research tradition within the intellectual traditions of constructing fabulous pasts. The seventeenth century was a period of institutionalisation of historical and antiquarian research in Sweden and Europe. Hence, I also studied the role of specific politico-historical and institutional conditions in the emergence, development and decline of the Hyperborean research tradition. By combining these two approaches, I attempted to strike a balance between research on long-term intellectual traditions and short-term immediate situations in which the ideas about the Hyperboreans were developed and used. Ultimately my thesis illustrates that the Hyperborean research tradition was a fairly coherent tradition of research. It arose in the early seventeenth century as part of the political pursuits and problems of Swedish monarchs in the domestic front and the Baltics. The tradition dominated Swedish historiography during the period of Swedish absolutism (1690–1720), before gradually crumbling from 1730s onwards. The emergence, development and decline of the Hyperborean research tradition were all a result of complex historiographical and politico-institutional factors. ; Tiivistelmä Keskityn väitöskirjassani 1600- ja 1700-lukujen ruotsalaisen historiankirjoituksen ilmiöön, jossa antiikin kirjoitusten myyttiset hyperborealaiset sisällytettiin niin kutsuttuun goottilaiseen historianarratiiviin. Tämä varhaismodernissa Ruotsissa suosittu historianarratiivi perustui näkemykseen Raamatun Maagogista sotaisten goottien sekä ruotsalaisten kantaisänä. Eurooppalaiset humanistit kuvasivat kuitenkin gootit keskiaikaisina barbaareina, minkä vastapainoksi oppineet Ruotsissa esittivät kotimaiset gootit sivistyneinä ja hurskaina hyperborealaisina. Hyperborealaisen tutkimusperinteen keskeisin tutkimuskohde oli muinaisen Ruotsin kulttuuri, jonka väitettiin levinneen Upsalasta aina Välimerelle saakka jo ennen kreikkalais-roomalaista antiikkia. Tukeakseen väitteitään oppineet käyttivät lähteinään antiikin kirjoitusten ohella Raamattua ja keskiajan historiantutkimusta. 1600-luvun mittaan he hyödynsivät kasvavassa määrin myös pohjolan alueen muinaismuistoja, kuten muinaisnorjalaisia kirjoituksia ja riimukiviä. Tutkimukseni lähdeaineisto muodostuu hyperborealaiseen perinteeseen kuuluneiden oppineiden julkaistuista ja julkaisemattomista kirjoituksista. Tarkastelen tutkimusperinteen yhtenäisyyttä analysoimalla sen keskeisimpiä yhdistäviä ja erottavia käsityksiä. Analyysini kattaa myös sen opillisten, lähinnä historiantutkimuksellisten puitteiden määrittämisen. Pyrin erityisesti ymmärtämään hyperborealaista tutkimusperinnettä osana varhaismodernille ajalle tyypillisiä historianarratiiveja tarunomaisesta kansallisesta muinaisuudesta. Ruotsalainen historian- ja muinaistutkimus institutionaalistui 1700-luvulla. Täten tarkastelen työn pääasiallisen tutkimusongelman ohella, kuinka poliittiset ja institutionaalisetolosuhteet myötävaikuttivat hyperborealaisen tutkimusperinteen kehittymiseen, vakiintumiseen ja asteittaiseen murenemiseen. Osoitan tutkimuksessani, että hyperborealainen tutkimusperinne syntyi 1600-luvun alussa liittyen Ruotsin kuninkaiden poliittisiin pyrkimyksiin sekä kotirintamalla että Itämerellä. Sen valtakausi sijoittui aikavälille 1685–1720, jolloin Ruotsin itsevaltiaat kuninkaat hyödynsivät hyperborealaisiin liitettäviä teemoja propagandassaan. Tutkimusperinteen vaiheittainen mureneminen tapahtui 1700-luvun puolivälissä. Sen taustalla oli useita poliittisia, institutionaalisia ja opillisia tekijöitä.
Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää, millainen turvallisuuskäsitys Euroopan unionissa vallitsee ja minkälaisia teemoja turvallisuuteen liitetään. Lisäksi tutkimus pyrkii analysoimaan Euroopan unionia vallankäyttäjänä kansainvälisessä politiikassa. Tutkimuksen aineisto muodostuu Euroopan unionin kahdesta turvallisuusstrategiasta. Päähuomio on vuonna 2016 julkaistussa Euroopan unionin ulko- ja turvallisuuspoliittisessa globaalistrategiassa, ja vertailuaineistona käytetään vuoden 2003 Euroopan turvallisuusstrategiaa. Strategiat valikoituivat tutkimuksen aineistoksi, sillä ne määrittelevät suuntaviivat ja toimintaperiaatteet Euroopan unionin ulko- ja turvallisuuspolitiikalle ja näin ollen kuvaavat keskeisimpiä teemoja ja toimijoita Euroopan unionin turvallisuuteen liittyen. Tutkimus toteutettiin käyttäen metodina Palosen (1988) poliittista luentaa. Poliittinen luenta pyrkii tutkimaan, kuinka poliittinen ulottuvuus ilmenee tekstissä ja minkälaisia tulkintoja tekstistä voidaan tehdä poimimalla siitä kiinnostavia ilmaisuja. Analyysin tukena käytettiin turvallisuusuhkia selvitettäessä Buzanin, Wæverin ja de Wilden (1998) kategorisointia turvallisuuden osa-alueista. Euroopan unionin valta-asemaa tarkasteltiin Tojen (2011) pikkuvallan sekä McCormickin (2007) supervallan käsitteiden avulla. Tutkimuksen perusteella Euroopan unionin turvallisuuspoliittinen kenttä näyttäytyy laajana. Vahvimpina osa-alueina vuoden 2016 globaalistrategiassa esiintyvät sotilaallisen ja taloudellisen turvallisuuden alueet. Poliittinen ja yhteiskunnallinen turvallisuus ilmenee osittain rinnakkain ja lomittain; eurooppalaiset arvot ja vahvat Euroopan unionin instituutiot ovat EU:n turvallisuuspolitiikan perusta. Huolimatta asemastaan ympäristönsuojelun edelläkävijänä ympäristöturvallisuus jää vuoden 2016 globaalistrategiassa vähälle huomiolle. Tulosten mukaan Euroopan unionin käytöksessä on havaittavissa piirteitä sekä pikkuvallasta että supervallasta. Voidaankin todeta, että EU nojaa globaalissa toiminnassaan vahvasti kansainvälisiin instituutioihin, mutta pyrkii myös luomaan itsenäistä asemaa. Erityisesti operatiivisen riippumattomuuden tavoittelu nousi aineistosta kantavana teemana. Aineiston perusteella Euroopan unioni on pikkuvalta, joka pyrkii kohti tunnustusta suurvaltana. ; The aim of the study is to analyze what kinds of understanding of security does the European Union have and what themes are linked to security. Additionally, the study aims to analyze the European Union as a power in international politics. The research material consists of two security strategies. The focus is on the Global Strategy for European Union's Foreign and Security policy, which was published in June 2016. This strategy is compared to the European Security Strategy of 2003 in order to detect new trends in European security policy. The strategies act as guidelines for the European security policy and thus represent the main actors and themes related to European security. Therefore, strategies provide interesting research material. The study was conducted through the method of political reading. Political reading (Palonen, 1988) aims to study how the political aspect appears in texts and what kinds of interpretations can be made from the political parlances. Buzan, Wæver, and de Wilde's (1998) categorization of the areas of security was a useful tool when analyzing the security threats presented in the Global Strategy. When studying the European Union as a power, Toje's (2011) concept of small power was used alongside McCormick's (2007) work on superpower. Based on the results, the field of European security is quite versatile. Strongest emphasis in the Global Strategy is on European military and economic security. Political and societal security is in most cases overlapping other areas; the strong institutions and European values are in the core of European security policy. Despite the EU's role as a trendsetter for environmental awareness, environmental security is underrepresented in the Global Strategy of 2016. The study shows that the European Union has behavioral elements of both a small power and a superpower. It can thus be argued that the EU relies heavily on international institutions, such as the UN, in its global actions, but at the same time tries to achieve a position as an independent actor. Operational independency was especially a current theme in the material. According to the Global Strategy of 2016, the European Union is a small power that aims towards recognition as a great power.
Suomalaiset ja espanjalaiset perheet yhtenevässä Euroopassa Tutkimus käsittelee perhettä ja perheessä 1900-luvun aikana tapahtunutta muutosta analysoimalla Suomea ja Espanjaa länsieurooppalaisina esimerkkeinä. Tutkimuksessa pohditaan miten, missä määrin ja miksi eurooppalaiset perheinstituutiot erilaisia tai samanlaisia? Mikä on perheinstituution rooli ja merkitys nykyajan yhteiskunnassa? Miten perhe, sen roolit ja siihen kohdistetut vaatimukset määritellään ja mitkä sosiaaliset ja kulttuuriset tekijät ovat vaikuttaneet eri maissa vallitseviin määritelmiin? Aineistona on käytetty Suomea ja Espanjaa koskevaa siviili- ja sosiaalilainsäädäntöä, demografisia ja sosio-ekonomisia tilastoja, arvo- ja asennetutkimuksia, barometrejä, tutkimuksia ja raportteja. Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltava ajanjakso kattaa koko 1900-luvun, joskin pääpaino on 19601990 lukujen välisessä ajassa. Tämä vertaileva tutkimus tarkastelee perhettä sosiaalisena instituutiona, joka on vuorovaikutuksessa muiden sosiaalisten instituutioiden kuten hyvinvointivaltion, työmarkkinoiden, politiikan, lainsäädännön ja uskonnon kanssa. Tutkimus osoittaa, että suomalaisessa ja espanjalaisessa yhteiskunnassa vallitseva käsitys perheestä (perheidologia) on varsin samanlainen pohjautuen kristilliseen teologiaan. Ideologiat ovat muuttuneet ja kehittyneet samansuuntaisesti patriarkaalisesta ideologiasta sukupuolien ja sukupolvien tasa-arvoa korostavaksi ideologisaksi, joskin muutos on ollut eritahtista. Maiden välillä on myös eroja, joista keskeisin on suomalaisen kulttuurin protestanttisiin arvoihin pohjautuva yksilöllisyys ja espanjalaisen kulttuurin katolisiin arvoihin pohjautuva suurempi kollektiivisuus ja sukukeskeisyys. Tutkimus kuitenkin osoittaa, että perheideologian ja sen historiallisen muutoksen erot ja vaihtelut eivät niinkään johdu perustavanlaatuisista perhekäsityseroista vaan pikemminkin yhteiskuntien historiallisista, sosiaalisista ja poliittisista taustoista ja kehityskuluista. Keskustelu perheen kriisistä länsimaisissa yhteiskunnissa on ollut vilkasta viime aikoina. Demografisiin tilastoihin perustuva analyysi viittaa perheinstituution kriisiin siinä mielessä, että mitään vakioista perhemuotoa ei kummassakaan maassa ole. Toisaalta ihmisten arvot ja asenteet heijastavat sitä tosiasiaa, että ideologisena mallina perhe on edelleen vankka. Ihanteellinen tai ideologinen perhe niin Suomessa kuin Espanjassakin on avioparin ja heidän lastensa muodostama ydinperhe, vaikka yhä suuremman osan perhetodellisuus ei tätä ihannetta vastaakaan. Perheen perustamisen tapojen tarkastelu 1960-1999 välisenä aikana osoittaa, että kummassakin maassa solmittujen avioliittojen määrä on laskenut, perhekoko on pienentynyt ja avioliiton solmimisen ja ensisynnyttäjien keksi-ikä on noussut, joskin espanjalaisnaiset ensisynnyttäjien keksi-ikä on vieläkin korkeampi kuin suomalaisten. Näitä trendejä on selitetty moderneilla ehkäisymenetelmillä sekä avoliittojen ja naisten työssäkäynnin yleistymisellä, mutta tutkimus osoittaa, että edellä mainitut selittävät tekijät eivät ole päteviä Suomen ja Espanjan tapauksissa. Ne eivät selitä, miksi mm. syntyvyys Espanjassa on huomattavasti matalampi kuin Suomessa ja miksi espanjalaiset lykkäävät perheen perustamista vieläkin pidempään kuin suomalaiset. Tarkasteltaessa seikkoja, jotka vaikuttavat perheellistymisen lykkääntymiseen, tutkimus kiinnittää huomiota perheellistymisen rooliin aikuistumisprosessissa. Tutkimus osoittaa, että toisin kuin ennen, vakiintumista ja lastenhankintaa tärkeämmäksi aikuisuuden kriteeriksi on noussut taloudellinen itsenäisyys. Todellisuudessa pidentyneet kouluttautumisajat, työelämän koventunut kilpailu ja työmarkkinoiden epävarmuus ovat niin Suomessa kuin Espanjassakin johtaneet siihen, että nuorten aikuisten taloudellisen itsenäisyyden saavuttaminen vaikeutuu ja pitkittyy ja siten myös perheen perustaminen lykkääntyy. Tutkimuksessa kehitetään selitysmallia niin maiden välisille eroille kuin länsieurooppalaisissa perheinstituutioissa tapahtuneille muutoksille, joka korostaa perheen perustamiseen ja perhe-elämään liittyvien valintojen ja mahdollisuuksien kiinteää liitosta yhteiskunnassa harjoitettuun lainsäädäntöön, perhepolitiikkaan ja erityisesti työmarkkinoihin. Tutkimus oikaisee niin perheestä kuin pohjoisen ja eteläisen Euroopan välisistä eroista vallitsevia stereotypioita ja yksinkertaistuksia ja tuottaa tietoa perheestä, sen roolista ja merkityksestä länsieurooppalaisissa yhteiskunnissa. Tutkimus on ns. artikkeliväitöskirja, joka koostuu laajasta yhteenvetoartikkelista ja neljästä aiemmin julkaistusta artikkelista. ; Finnish and Spanish Families in Converging Europe The study explores the family and its changes during the 20th century and, particularly, between the 1960s and 1990s by comparing Finland and Spain within the West European context. The examination of the family arises from the following questions: (i) How, to what degree and why are family institutions in Europe different or similar? (ii) What are the roles and significance of the family in contemporary societies? (iii) How is the family defined and what social and cultural factors have affected the definitions in different countries? The family is viewed as a social institution, with the interest lying in macro-level social changes and in the interrelationship between the family and other social institutions such as the welfare state, the labour market, politics, legislation and religion. The family as an institution has been examined from the viewpoints of family ideology and family practices. Family ideology has been studied by analysing how public and political institutions such as legislation and family policy define the family and how these definitions changed during the 20th century and, second, by looking at attitudes and values concerning intimate relations, the family and family practices. Family practices have been studied by analysing and comparing socio-demographic statistics between the 1960s and 1990s, the focus being on the formation of the first family. Furthermore, cross-national differences and similarities concerning patterns of family formation and prevailing family ideologies have been examined in association with legislation, social policies, the labour market, housing policies, education, gender relations, and religion. The study questions the stereotypical notions of the modern North and traditional South and their typical families and demonstrates that differences between Finnish (Northern) and Spanish (Southern) families have been greatly exaggerated and oversimplified. Fundamentally, the family ideologies are the same based on Christian tradition and, furthermore, the evolution of ideologies has moved in the same direction along with modernisation processes, albeit at a different pace. The study demonstrates that the variations are not due to fundamentally different conceptions of the family but to the historical, social and political developments of the countries. Analyses of demographic statistics and data on Finns and Spaniards values and attitudes indicate that demographic statistics suggest a crisis of The Family, for in neither of the countries does a fixed or typical family form exist and the growing plurality of family forms is a fact. On the other hand, the study also shows that The Family the conjugal nuclear family - is very much alive and well as an ideological model and ideal. Looking at patterns of family formation and considering a variety of hypotheses usually presented as explaining the differences: contraceptive use, premarital cohabitation and women s labour market participation, the study shows that these reasons do not explain the differences between Finnish and Spanish patterns of first family formation. The study suggests that family-relevant public policies, housing policies and the labour market in particular are factors that better explain why Spaniards have fewer children and form families later than Finns even though the female employment rate is considerably lower and the use of modern contraceptives and premarital cohabitation is clearly more infrequent in Spain than in Finland. Analysis of the role of family formation in the process of attaining adult status shows that financial independence and self-reliance have taken over from marriage and parenthood as the principal markers of adulthood both in Finland and Spain. However, prolonged periods in education and erratic labour markets tend to complicate the attainment of such independence, reflected in the postponement or even rejection of family formation, especially marriage and parenthood. Yet, a de-familialised welfare state like the Finnish one eases gaining independence and family formation even with limited means, whereas a familistic welfare state like the Spanish one makes it more difficult to cut the cord to the parental home and to form new families. The study elaborates a complex and subtle model for explaining both the differences between countries and changes in the West European family institution in general. The model emphasises the role of public policies, housing policies, legislation and the labour market in particular in shaping the framework within which people in different countries make their decisions concerning family and family life. This comparative study is a dissertation comprised of a lengthy summarising article that links four empirical studies that were previously published as articles in international scientific journals and edited volumes.
