The Global Impact and Legacy of Truth Commissions emerges at a time when there is a confluence of two trends. The first is a growing critique of truth commissions as being unresponsive to the socio-economic needs of transitional societies as part of growing criticism of transitional justice as a whole. The second is the increasing use, salience, professionalism and ambition of truth commissions. Thus, the book is published at a time when truth commissions are being both doubted and reified like never before. In this context, the book's purpose is to understand the impact and legacy of these institutions over the past fifty years. Bringing together many prominent voices on the topic, this book investigates what kind of impact and legacy (possibly 100) truth commissions have had on the societies in which they have taken place, and for future truth commissions the world over.

Philosophers of science have long tried to identify some demarcation line capable of distinguishing science from pseudoscience. Nonetheless, no ultimate set of requirements has so far been achieved, leaving demarcation uncertain and fluctuating, if not merely rhetorical. The habit of using the word 'science' to address a specific kind of knowledge is a modern practice, with 'science' having gradually taken over terms like 'natural philosophy' and 'natural history.' Thereby, the term 'pseudoscience' is also a recent one, with its meaning running alongside scientific endeavors of the nineteenth century. The article contributes to the debate aiming to pragmatically describe the function of pseudoscience in epistemology. To account for this, we argue that questions like What is pseudoscience? or What makes science science? would be better replaced by the question What do people do with the word pseudoscience?

Resumo Ainda que os etnomusicólogos não ignorem a estreita ligação da música com os processos emocionais, eles deixaram o tema de lado durante quase meio século. É duplo o objetivo deste artigo. Em primeiro lugar, serão analisadas as relações entre emoções e música em um contexto cultural bem delimitado, a saber, aquele de uma comunidade cigana da Transilvânia (Romênia). Adotamos como critério metodológico focar a atenção nos "prantos musicais", situações em que lágrimas e música caminham juntas. Foram analisados três contextos distintos de performance: a prestação de serviço profissional, as festas espontâneas e os funerais. A partir dessas descrições etnográficas, o segundo objetivo consistirá em extrapolar informações que possam ser comparadas com dados provenientes de outras sociedades. No longo prazo, esse procedimento permitirá identificar os processos psicológicos e sociais recorrentes, quiçá universais, da emoção musical.

The European population is aging and, by 2050, Portugal will face a most alarming scenario, with an old-age dependency ratio — i.e. the number of individuals aged 65 or older as a share of the active age population — above 65%, almost double the figure for 2016. Portugal has already undertaken measures to improve the financial resilience of the pension system, but still lacks a better understanding of its social sustainability. We resort to the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) to study individual heterogeneity on pension preferences and find that poor health and unemployment are, together with age and the length of the contributory career, key elements to understand early retirement, while late retirement is associated with higher income. Identifying socioeconomic groups with incentives to deviate from the statutory retirement age is crucial to policy makers currently debating the retirement age in Portugal.

National studies have demonstrated their inability to correctly understand global phenomena, and the way in which they affect societies. This chronologically ambitious book investigates methodological and theoretical issues from Roman times to the present, in terms of globalization. In this context, one of the most relevant parameters of change emerges: the itinerancy of culture and knowledge. Therefore, this volume argues that itinerant agents carry with them cultural baggage, transporting and transmitting it to other spaces. In this way, interconnection begins, producing active changes in global history and visual culture. Contributions to this book focus on comparative studies, the evolution of global phenomena, historical processes in their diachrony, regional studies, changing economies, cultural continuities, and methodological questions on globalization, among others. In addition, the book opens with a contribution from Professor Peter Burke.

Este artigo fornece uma breve história da segurança de informação, com ênfase nas ameaças à segurança cibernética e como estas são influenciadas pela globalização. É realizada uma análise comparativa de três fontes diferentes para captar alguns padrões sobre esta relação: 1) relatórios da ENISA sobre ameaças cibernéticas, 2) relatório global de riscos, sobre ameaças globais e 3) relatório DHL – Global Connectedness para indicadores de globalização. Para evitar dispersão, a análise é circunscrita aproximadamente à última década. Este relatório aponta para uma intensificação das ameaças cibernéticas nos últimos anos, enquanto os indicadores de globalização sugerem um abrandamento nas interligações globais. São recomendadas para investigação adicional algumas hipóteses para explicar estes padrões

This article provides a brief history of information security, with emphasis on cybersecurity threats and how these are influenced by globalization. A comparative analysis of three different sources is conducted to capture some patterns about this relationship: 1) ENISA reports on cyberthreats, 2) The Global Risks Report, on global threats and the 3) DHLGlobal Connectedness report for globalization indicators. To avoid dispersion, the analysis is circumscribed roughly to the last decade. This report points to an intensification of cyber threats in the last few years, while the globalization indicators suggest a slowdown in global interconnections. A number of hypotheses to explain these patterns are recommended for further research.
