Over time, mankind has understood that change is always present in all areas of its life - from the internal environment of each person, to the external environment, and up to the macrocosmic level. What shocks, lately, are the dynamics / speed, complexity and magnitude of change; "Change that involves people is a transition according to Bridges, and people are the essence of any process of change." (Mergner, Janssen, Mandic Lukic, 2020, p.10). The year 2020, marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has taken humanity "by surprise and unprepared" and which will cause a major transition on all levels of human life, will symbolize the "year of restart" or the beginning of a global reengineering process. Thus, in the complex issue of the transition from carbon-intensive areas in the context of the TRACER project appeared this new component - not negligible, which influences all forecasts, models and scenarios on social challenges and future skills needs of the TRACER target regions. The latest COVID-19 crisis has shaken many "certainties" we have had about labour market needs, job requirements and work environment. Many employers have faced decisions on human resources practices, such as: the opportunity to use remote teams; the replacement of formal meetings with various review substitutes; the empowerment of employees to exercise self-reflection in order to align their assignments to the new work constraints etc. One of the effects of this new context is that it has challenged organisational common places and routines, some of which have proven no longer useful, if in the nature of the case the organisation cannot any longer comply with one-on-one and face-toface interaction. While deprived of physical presence of teams and immediate managerial control, contemporary societies have shown the radical constructivist characteristics of some of their settings. In mining regions facing structural transitions one of the challenges to re-skilling is given by the relentless lingering of local actors to old ways of "doing things" (from managing communities to identifying labour market opportunities and needs). Maybe for such a time as this the various stakeholders of mining regions should show more versatility to innovative proposals that might have been out of sight a decade ago.

The challenge: * Systems perspectives on energy involve a holistic view on balancing demand and supply; system optimisation can support security of supply, affordability, sustainability and profitability. * A central, and relatively recent, element of system optimisation is the move towards smart grids, and smart technologies, which concern interconnection of system elements usually through the internet. As well as increasing the resilience of the network, it is hoped this will help "citizens take ownership of the energy transition [and] benefit from new technologies". * 'Smartification' of the energy system introduces a range of new societal conditions and consequences. The aim: * European energy policy has so far mainly relied on research from Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Energy-related Social Sciences and Humanities (energy-SSH) have been significantly underrepresented. The aim of this bibliography is to give policymakers a selected yet broad impression of the SSH research community focusing on 'energy system optimisation and smart technologies'. Wherever possible, policy deductions or research and innovation recommendations are mentioned. Coverage: * Disciplines covered in this bibliography are broadly representative of the current SSH research community in the area, with a slight bias towards Economics, Sociology and Science & Technology Studies. Nevertheless, robust accounts from Psychology, Politics, Ethnography, Development, Environmental Social Science, Geography, Planning, Law, History and other fields are also included. * Geographically, research presented is primarily from Western and Northern Europe, but with diversity across these regions, and inclusion of some Eastern European and non-European contributions. * Techno-economic accounts are very highly represented in the field of energy system optimisation and smart technologies, a fact highlighted by researchers themselves. Much of this research concentrates on financial cost/benefit of smart grid and technical design, while approaches focusing on social practices or user-centric design are increasing but still underrepresented. The latter were deliberately given higher visibility in this bibliography. Key findings: * Numerous papers presented here focus on how questions of smart technology diffusion, innovation, and adoption might be shifted away from monetary incentives or cost/benefit analyses of technologies. * A unifying message across many topics and disciplines - from energy justice or socio-technical scenarios, to Economics or Ethnography - is that co-operation between techno-economic and SSH approaches needs more attention and is crucial for successful smart grid realisation. * Another important debate for SSH researchers is the deconstruction of overly optimistic visions of smart societies. Many authors urge caution in considering the (financial and social) costs and benefits of smart technologies for all of society, including issues of privacy intrusion. There are calls for more research on both policy initiatives, preferably targeting the community level, and clear communication strategies which fully consider these aspects.

This paper reviews different approaches to modelling the energy transition towards a zero carbon economy. It identifies a number of limitations in current approaches such as a lack of consideration of out-of-equilibrium situations (like an energy transition) and non-linear feedbacks. To tackle those issues, the new open source integrated assessment model pymedeas is introduced, which allows the exploration of the design and planning of appropriate strategies and policies for decarbonizing the energy sector at World and EU level. The main novelty of the new open-source model is that it addresses the energy transition by considering biophysical limits, availability of raw materials, and climate change impacts. This paper showcases the model capabilities through several simulation experiments to explore alternative pathways for the renewable transition. In the selected scenarios of this work scenarios of this work, future shortage of 1 fossil fuels is found to be the most influential factor of the simulations system evolution. Changes in efficiency and climate change damages are also important determinants influencing model outcomes.
