ABSTRACTNew holistic approaches to environmental management by local authorities are described. Two kinds of audit, the state of the environment report and the internal audit, are defined. State of the environment reports are assessments of the condition of the local environment, generally based on existing data. They provide information about the environment to the general public and enable councils to determine environmental strategy priorities. They are giving local authorities a new environmental stewardship function. An internal audit is an assessment not only of the authority's impacts as a producer but of its environmental interactions as a regulator, influencer and manager of the environment. For some councils, auditing is becoming a continuous process through which environmental factors can be taken into account as a routine part of policy making and implementation. Both kinds of audit are changing the relationships of local authorities, reducing internal departmentalism and leading to wider consultation and partnership with local communities.

This study examines the profitability of eggplant under insect pest management in Owo local government area, Ondo State. Data used for the study was obtained using structured questionnaire administered to 80 randomly selected eggplant farmers in the study area. Descriptive statistics and budgetary analysis was used to estimate socio economic characteristics and the profitability of the respondents. Results showed that 72% of the farmers were male, and the average age of between 31~50 years constitute 61%, with little or no formal education and 60% having family size of 4 children and above. The study also revealed that majority of the farmers intercropped eggplant with yam and cocoyam, it was also discovered that 92% of the farmers indicated that there is pest infestation and 67.5% have experience above 5 years. The budgetary analysis showed a positive gross margin indicating eggplant production is profitable in the two categories of producers, though those with pesticides recorded higher yield vis-à-vis return on investment with a average gross margin of N12, 266/ ha and N5,125/ ha respectively in the study area.

This article examines the intersection between masculinity, military culture, and hospice and palliative care (HPC). The authors conducted a narrative literature review, supplemented with clinical annotations, to identify the impact of masculinity and military culture on the following topics salient to end-of-life care with older male veterans: pain management, mental health, coping, communication, autonomy and respect, and family roles. Findings suggest that traits associated with masculinity and military culture have an influence on the end-of-life process and HPC for older male veterans. Specifically, results suggest that older male veterans may deny or minimize physical pain, decline mental health treatment, utilize maladaptive coping strategies, avoid emotional conversations, struggle to manage perceived shifts in autonomy, and experience challenges negotiating changing family roles. The authors provide clinical recommendations for providers across various disciplines to address the aforementioned concerns with older male veterans in HPC. Overall, information presented in this article may be an important contribution to the literature for building cultural competencies with older male veterans and has the potential to improve the delivery of HPC for veterans and their families.

The West African Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemic was the largest and most devastating outbreak of EVD the world has ever seen. Its impact was felt far from the shores of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, with public health systems and clinicians across the globe confronted with an international response both in the affected region and within their own borders. The UK had a prominent role in response efforts, particularly in Sierra Leone. This article highlights how UK academic, health service, military, commercial and public health professionals all played a significant role both at home and abroad.
