Processes of self-definition in a context of socio-structural change are analyzed & exemplified by the environmental organization 'Naturfreunde,' (Friends of Nature), founded in 1895 in the working class milieu. Due to modernization & the dissolving of milieus, the self concept of the organization cannot be grounded in clear differences & borders. Renate Hofer focuses on the constructions of belonging, which are analyzed on the level of programs & in everyday action. Traditional as well as modern-reflexive strategies coexist in the organization. Typical is a historically fashioned, hierarchical pluralism, an virtuous entanglement of alternatives & a polyvalence today. This demonstrates their ability of adoption & explains why they were not forerunners in processes of change. It also exemplifies how after the loss of the traditional bonding-force in the working class milieu, a new identity construction is implemented by redefining the organizations history. References.
