This paper is based on the assumption that sustainable spatial development requires a relational perspective on space and a specific focus on conflict resolution. These general requests are applied to a specific spatial planning topic: landscape identities. The latter are defined as individual interpretations of specific landscape features referring to both physical environments and social place meanings. For an empirical assessment, landscape identities are operationalized as a variation of the 'appropriated physical space'. Thus, our core interest is on spatial features used for subjective interpretations about landscape distinctiveness, for the formation of a sense of belonging and togetherness as well as for emotional attachments. Based on these so-called reference points, a determination of identity-relevant conflicts becomes possible, i.e. of opposing landscape identity interpretations. In a rural case study region, landscape identities are made visible using qualitative-reconstructive methods. The results of 28 semi-structured interviews indicate a diverse spectrum of reference points. These features were repeatedly discussed even though the individual meanings ascribed to them vary. Furthermore, our results show conflicting interpretations: the same features are regarded by some as identity-creating, but explicitly not by others. In face of the empirical results, the theoretical and methodological considerations are discussed and planning implications are suggested. A particular focus is on opportunities to deal with conflicting interpretations of landscape identities.

Wissenstransfer ist im Forschungszentrum TRUST ein wichtiges Querschnittsthema, das den aktuellen Diskussionsstand der Wissenschaftspolitik aufgreift und zu einem spezifischen Verständnis für die räumliche Transformation von Stadt und Land weiterentwickelt. Wissenschaftlerinnen aus dem Institut für Umweltplanung erläutern am Beispiel eines aktuellen TRUST-Projektes, wie dieses Verständnis von Wissenstransfer in der praktischen Forschungsarbeit umgesetzt wird.

Ausgangspunkt des Beitrages ist die Annahme, dass nachhaltige Raumentwicklung in substanzieller Hinsicht an ein relationales Raumverständnis und prozedural an die Auseinandersetzung mit Konflikten gebunden ist. Diese Anforderungen werden auf einen konkreten Gegenstand der räumlichen Planung bezogen: landschaftsbezogene Identitäten. Deren Konzeptualisierung erfolgt als individuelle Deutungen landschaftlicher Spezifik, die sich der Materialität ebenso wie gesellschaftlicher Deutungsmuster bedienen. Für die empirische Erfassung werden landschaftsbezogene Identitäten als Zuspitzung der 'angeeigneten physischen Landschaft' konkretisiert. Im Zentrum des Interesses stehen also solche Merkmale, die zur individuellen Konstruktion spezifischer Landschaft 'zusammengeschaut' werden und auf die sich Zugehörigkeits- bzw. Zusammengehörigkeitsvorstellungen sowie emotionale Zuwendungen beziehen. An diesen als Referenzpunkte bezeichneten Merkmalen kommen auch identitätsrelevante Konflikte zum Ausdruck, also gegensätzliche Deutungen landschaftlicher Spezifik. In einer ländlichen Fallstudienregion werden so verstandene landschaftsbezogene Identitäten mit qualitativ-rekonstruktiven Methoden sichtbar gemacht. Die Ergebnisse von 28 leitfadengestützten Interviews belegen ein vielfältiges Spektrum an Referenzpunkten, die zwar individuell unterschiedlich besetzt sind, aber dennoch wiederholt auftreten. Zudem zeigen sich gegensätzliche Deutungsmuster: Dieselben Merkmale gelten den einen als identitätsstiftend, den anderen nicht. Die Diskussion resümiert die theoretisch-konzeptionellen und methodologischen Überlegungen vor dem Hintergrund der empirischen Ergebnisse und leitet Implikationen für die räumliche Planung ab. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt dabei auf Handlungsempfehlungen zur Bearbeitung konfliktär verfasster Lesarten landschaftsbezogener Identität.

Innovative contracts are needed that promote the provision of biodiversity and diverse ecosystem services from land under agricultural production, given that mainstream agri-environment-climate measures (AECM) funded by the public purse have shown limited effectiveness. Recently, various actors from the public, private and third sectors have experimented with and implemented innovative contracts that incentivise farmers for the increased provision of environmental public goods alongside private goods. Due to their evolving and experimental nature, detailed information on characteristics of contract design and governance context of these contracts is lacking, hence preventing them from being used more widely. This paper addresses this gap and reports the findings of an analysis of 62 cases, based on information from a literature review and complemented by expert knowledge. Following an actor-based typology, we identified innovative payments for ecosystem services (PES) as the most common contract type, followed by value chain approaches and very few land tenure contracts. Alternative classifications are possible, with hybrid contracts showing promising combinations of different contract characteristics such as basis of payment (action-based, results-based) and contract parties (collective or bilateral arrangements). The most innovative approaches were value chain contracts. They exhibited more tailored contracts between (single) producers and processors instead of the generic publicly-funded AECM, a stronger bottom-up approach to define the (mostly action-based) measures, and the interest of processors to use these activities for marketing purposes. In contrast, publicly-funded PES contracts appeared to be more innovative with respect to results-based payments rewarding the environmental performance of farmers, and providing them more flexibility and autonomy. The integration of spatial identity is seen to be a crucial factor for successful place branding. However, spatial identity is often insufficiently conceptualised. In light of this, this article presents a theory-based approach to using spatial identity in an applied context such as place branding. This is done using the example of the Regiobranding research project. This project systematically surveyed landscape identity - a specified variant of spatial identity. Starting from social-constructivist approaches to landscape, landscape identity is presented as an individual and social interpretation of landscape distinctiveness and character and the associated place attachments. In the empirical part, individual interpretations of landscape identity are qualitatively recorded in a rural case study region and evaluated across all the cases. This cross-case analysis visualises the appropriated identity-forming landscape, in other words, the reference points that are repeatedly interpreted as distinctive or characteristic in relation to the space and/or that are frequently activated as components of individual place attachments. The results show an extensive range of different reference points: those interviewed describe these reference points in various ways, connect them, and use them as cognitive/emotional reference points. Furthermore, the cross-case analysis revealed contradictory patterns of interpretation. Our empirical findings highlight that landscape identity is predominantly an individually constructed reality, which is neither unambiguous nor without contradictions. Against this background, specific actions are recommended for using landscape identity in place branding processes.

Die Integration raumbezogener Identität gilt als Erfolgsfaktor für Place Branding. Dennoch ist der Begriff der raumbezogenen Identität häufig unzureichend konzeptualisiert. Das Ziel dieses Beitrags ist daher, einen theoretisch fundierten Umgang mit raumbezogener Identität in einem anwendungsbezogenen Kontext aufzuzeigen. Dies erfolgt am Beispiel des Forschungsvorhabens Regiobranding, in dem landschaftsezogene Identität - als spezifizierte Variante raumbezogener Identität - systematisch erhoben wurde. Ausgangspunkt theoretischer Überlegungen sind sozialkonstruktivistische Landschaftsverständnisse. Darauf aufbauend wird landschaftsbezogene Identität als individuelle und gesellschaftliche Deutung landschaftlicher Eigenheit und Typik sowie daran geknüpfter Raumbindungen verstanden. Im empirischen Teil werden in einer ländlichen Fallstudienregion individuelle Deutungen landschaftsbezogener Identität qualitativ erfasst und fallübergreifend ausgewertet. Dieses Vorgehen macht die
angeeignete identitätsstiftende Landschaft sichtbar, also Referenzpunkte, die wiederholt als raumbezogene Typik bzw. Eigenheit gedeutet und/oder als Komponente individueller Raumbindungen aktiviert werden. Die Ergebnisse zeigen eine hohe Bandbreite verschiedener Referenzpunkte, welche die Interviewpartner vielfältig beschreiben, verbinden und als Bezugspunkte kognitiv-emotionaler Zuwendung nutzen. Durch die fallübergreifende Datenanalyse ließen sich zudem widersprüchliche Deutungsmuster darstellen. Damit belegen die empirischen Befunde, dass landschaftsbezogene Identitäten individuell konstruierte Realitäten darstellen, die im Vergleich weder eindeutig noch widerspruchslos sind. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden konkrete Handlungsempfehlungen für die Nutzung landschaftsbezogener Identität in Place Branding-Prozessen herausgearbeitet.
