Results of two studies provide the first evidence of third-person effect among children. In Study 1 (a survey of 571 seventh-grade students), children believed that cigarette advertisements influenced others more than themselves (third-person perception). Moreover, when children compared themselves with peers, the discrepancy between self and others was larger than when children compared themselves with their best friends (social distance corollary). In Study 2, children from Grades 4, 6, and 8 (n = 666) watched a 10-minute video portraying either cigarette or anti-smoking advertisements. Regardless of which video they watched, children believed that cigarette ads have greater influence on others than on themselves. The opposite was true for anti-smoking advertisements, however. Children believed that anti-smoking ads have greater influence on themselves than others (a reverse third-person perception). Children did not perceive uniformly greater impact of persuasive messages on people other than themselves. Instead, children's judgments of media influence were consistently self-serving. These findings corroborate a theory that third-person perception is the product of a superiority bias—the tendency to see ourselves as better, or better off, than others.

The research described in this article tested the social cognitive hypotheses that self-efficacy can be enhanced more effectively by symbolically modeling risk reduction information and by encouraging its cognitive rehearsal than by the presentation of risk reduction information alone. Young unmarried women (N = 138) viewed one of three videos: AIDS information only, information plus modeling, or information plus modeling with cognitive rehearsal. The hypotheses were confirmed at both posttest and one month follow-up: AIDS prevention self-efficacy was most improved among participants who watched the information plus modeling with rehearsal video, while participants viewing the information plus modeling video exhibited an intermediate level of improvement. Certain AIDS preventive behaviors, including condom purchases and conversations with friends about safe sex, also exhibited significant treatment-related changes at follow-up. These results indicate that symbolic modeling and cognitive rehearsal of modeled information are effective strategies for enhancing perceptions of self-efficacy through televised media.

In a within-subjects design (n = 30), a sampling of rational and emotional public service announcements related to acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) was tested for memorability. Subjects' cognitive involvement with the issue of AIDS was measured with a four-item scale (alpha = .86). Analysis of variance indicated a significant main effect of appeal (p < .05), emotional messages being more memorable, and a significant Appeal x Involvement interaction (p <.05). Subjects with low involvement remembered emotional messages better than they remembered rational messages. However, highly involved subjects exhibited no appeal-related memory differences. Emotional messages were also significantly more effective in stimulating a desire to learn more about AIDS (p < .01). These results extend and lend partial support to the elaboration likelihood model and illustrate the importance of issue involvement as a audience segmentation characteristic.

Public health campaign success is conceptualized in terms of improvements in three cardiovascular disease-related behaviors (diet, exercise, and smoking) and their precursors, including knowledge and self-efficacy. Two cross-sectional data waves (baseline and sixth year, N = 4,214) from the Stanford Five-City Project (FCP) are analyzed to test a model of campaign influences. Exposure to FCP campaign messages is correlated with health information seeking and interpersonal communication, which in turn are correlated with health behaviors. The central premise of the model is then tested on a longitudinal sample (N = 1,225) over a 3-year period with similar results. An overall health orientation index is introduced and recommendations are made for enhancing public health campaign effectiveness.

This study examines the process of media supplementation in the Stanford Five-City Multifactor Risk Reduction Project, a long-term trial of communitywide cardiovascular disease risk reduction conducted by Farquhar and associates. The data indicate that accessible awareness media disseminated early in the education campaign promoted use of information-rich depth media later on, demonstrating that supplementation occurred. Moreover, analyses suggest that awareness media prompted behavioral trials and information seeking through interpersonal discussion and print media. Results further imply that this information and support encouraged behavior change and enhanced self-efficacy. It is argued that the ability of a long-term, multifaceted campaign to promote complex interactions between media messages, interpersonal discussion, and individuals' knowledge, attitudes, and behavior over time is the strength of this kind of project—in other words, the possibility for synergy.

Purpose.The purpose of this study is to determine if worksite cholesterol screening reaches only those who are already aware of their cholesterol and interested in lifestyle modification.Design.A voluntary worksite cholesterol screening was conducted followed by a survey of a random sample of nonparticipants.Setting.A large university worksite was the setting for this study.Subjects.Out of 9,137 university employees, 1,583 attended the voluntary screening, and a random sample of nonparticipants was obtained (n = 154), of which 87% (n = 138) responded.Measures.Subjects completed a questionnaire on health behaviors, perceived risk, self-efficacy for diet change, and attention to media messages. A capillary blood cholesterol level was also taken.Results.Nonparticipants were more likely to be male (64% versus 39%) and smokers (17% versus 9%), more likely to exercise, to have had a prior cholesterol measurement (64% versus 49%), and to "know" their cholesterol value (56% versus 26%). The two groups were otherwise similar. Over half (51%) of the participants were receiving their first cholesterol measurement. These subjects were younger, less educated, had less perceived risk, were less attentive to media messages, and more likely to be from a minority group than those individuals who had prior measurements.Discussion.These findings suggest that worksite cholesterol screening does not only reach those already aware of their cholesterols, but also can reach some persons not previously screened or concerned.

AbstractThe climate crisis and associated push for distributed, renewable electricity generation necessitate policy changes to decarbonize and modernize the electricity grid. Some of these changes—e.g., smart meter rollouts and tax credits for solar panel adoption—have received attention in the media and from social scientists to understand public perceptions and responses. Others—e.g., allowing peer‐to‐peer electricity sales, promoting residential electrification, requiring solar panels on new development, funding microgrids, and paying customers to allow for utility control of electricity use—have received less attention. Here, we explore public perceptions of these understudied policies among California residents (n = 804), a state recognized for innovative energy policy. A majority of respondents supported only one of the policies—requiring solar panels on new development. Others elicited more indecision; few were strongly opposed. In general, male respondents and those with college degrees were more supportive of such policies, as were those more concerned about climate change and with a more open orientation to smart home technologies.

Abstract
The September 2020 Oregon wildfires were unprecedented in terms of their geographic scope and the number of communities affected by smoke and wildfire. Although it is difficult to directly attribute the event to climate change, scientists have noted the strong connection between warmer and drier conditions in the western United States—conditions that are linked to climate change—and increasing wildfire risk. These wildfires thus had the potential to act as a "focusing event," potentially strengthening public support for climate change policy. Political ideology is a well-known driver of public support for climate change mitigation policies in the United States, but few studies have examined adaptation policy support. Moreover, other factors shaping postevent support for the two "pillars" of climate change policy—adaptation and mitigation—have rarely been compared. We conducted a survey of Oregonians within 6 months of the 2020 wildfires (n = 1308) to understand postevent support for climate mitigation and adaptation policies. We found that the magnitude of the association between political ideology and policy support was lower for adaptation policies than for mitigation policies, and there was no association with support for forest management changes. In contrast, selected sociodemographic characteristics played a more important role in support for selected adaptation policies than for mitigation policies.

Significance Statement
Increasing wildfire risk in the western United States is connected to warmer and drier conditions, both of which are linked to climate change. Most research on postevent support for climate change policy has focused on climate change mitigation policies. This study examines and compares public support for both mitigation and adaptation policies after the 2020 Oregon wildfires, yielding important information about the factors that shape support for each.

Natural American Spirit (NAS) cigarettes feature a pro-environment marketing campaign on the packs. The NAS "Respect for the Earth" campaign is the first example of on-the-pack corporate social responsibility advertising. In a randomized survey design, we tested perceptions of NAS relative to other cigarette brands on harms to self, others, and the environment. Never (n = 421), former (n = 135), and current (n = 358) US adult smokers were recruited for an online survey from January through March 2018. All participants viewed packs of both NAS and Pall Mall. Participants were randomized to view NAS vs. Pall Mall and to pack color (blue, green, or yellow/orange), which was matched between brands. Survey items assessed perceptions of health risk of the cigarette brand to self, others, and the environment and corporate perceptions. Consistently on all measures, NAS cigarettes were rated as less harmful for oneself, others, and the environment relative to Pall Mall (p's < .001). Though Reynolds American owns both brands, participants rated the company behind NAS as more socially responsible than the company behind Pall Mall, F[1, 909] = 110.25, p < .001. The NAS advantage was significant irrespective of smoking status, pack color, and brand order, with findings stronger for current than never smokers. Pro-environmental marketing on NAS cigarette packs contributes to misperceptions that the product is safer for people and the environment than other cigarettes and made by a company that is more socially responsible. Stricter government regulations on the use of pro-environment terms in marketing that imply modified risk are needed.

Research suggests that vivid and personalized interventions influence proenvironmental attitudes and behaviors. Through the use of immersive virtual environment technology, people can experience vivid environmental scenarios that are personalized to the individual. An experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of vivid and/or personal messages on energy savings behavior related to hot water use. Participants experienced a virtual shower in which they received feedback (varying in vividness and/or personalization) on the amount of energy used to heat and transport the virtual water. Participants' hot water use during hand washing in the physical world was tracked before and after treatment. Participants exposed to vivid messages used cooler water compared with not vivid messages. There was no significant effect for personal messages and no interaction effect. The results suggest that technology that leverages vividness may be effective in promoting proenvironmental behaviors.
