The study shows, that Israel's "Economic Stabilization Policy" (ESP) launched on July 1st, 1985, has so far succeeded in achieving one of its targets - a very substantial (though not final) shackling of inflation. It has made very little progress along the path to the second target of a sustainable balance of payments, nor has it succeeded in pushing the economy onto the takeoff point for growth. (DÜI-Hns)

The paper offers a comprehensive estimate of the costs of the Israeli Lebanon war. The total of the items of direct costs - the budgetary-reckoned purchases of defense goods, restocking and repairs stretching into 1985 and 1986, medical costs, and the cost of extraordinary reserve duty - is about $3-3.5 billion. The total of the items of indirect costs - loss of feasible GNP, increase in cost of foreign debt service, expedition of arms race - is about $1.5 billion. (DÜI-Hns)
