Book launches are not usually contentious occasions, even though authors, & especially publishers, appreciate the advantages of some scandal. But in general one arrives at the venue anticipating praise & applause -- nibbles, not argument. In all, I've attended three book launches at a bookshop located conveniently to Sydney University. When Gough Whitlam launched Cassandra Pybus' opus, "The Devil & James McAuley," I saw the Grand Old Man of politics cornered by the leader of a small group of elderly female activists. The lady earnestly berated him for failing to oppose Indonesian takeover of East Timor in the 1970s. Adapted from the source document.
