; The paper analyses the status of party meetings during the Great Terror (1936-1938) on the basis of archival materials. According to the author's hypothesis, confession, preaching and revelations at party meetings were a model of terror practices of 1936-1938. Party meetings, which have preserved the statutory form, radically changed their function: from the tool of normalization they have turned into an instrument of political self-destruction. The whole campaign took place among people who were only superficially affected by the new Bolshevik culture, its symbols and values. Party meetings turned to the field of hunting enemies of the people within the party. Varying scenarios of the power can be found in their political narrative. The language of party meetings and the language of investigation documents of the time show a far-reaching similarity: in vocabulary, topics, and moral judgements. That was a universal language of power. The primacy of the party language is a strong evidence of maintaining leadership of the CPSU (b) in the Great Terror. There was a renewal of political language with expressive vocabulary and with renaming events and actions (for example, participation in opposition a crime against the party; conciliation double-dealing; lack of self-criticism sycophancy, etc.). New terror discourse, repeated in the fractures and collapses of arrayed social ties, put party members in a border existential situation: to be witnesses and accomplices of the destruction of the collective past and, ultimately, their own identity, or to put obstacles to that pernicious process.

The article presents the results of a study of the social crisis in the Gulag during the first postwar decade. The study focuses on the camps and colonies located in Molotov Oblast. The main sources of the study are the materials of prosecutor's supervision that are stored in the corresponding fonds of the State Archive of Perm Krai and the Perm State Archive of Socio-Political History. Special attention is paid to the activities of D. Kulyapin, Public Prosecutor of the oblast (1942-49). Studying the literature on the subject made it possible to formulate an explanatory model, according to which the Gulag crisis includes several components: economic, social, and cultural ones. It is associated with increasing social tensions in the postwar Soviet society: the conflict of particularistic interests of different social communities, the growth of internal and external aggressiveness, and other features of social disorganization. One of the manifestations of social disorganization is the aggravation of interdepartmental conflicts, including those between various punitive institutions. The prosecutor's office was put in such a position that its employees had to defend its constitutional status, which was in fact challenged by the bodies of the MGB and the MVD. For this reason, prosecutor's supervision was aimed at revealing shortcomings, violations, and lawlessness at the regional levels of the camp system. D. Kulyapin formulated the main features of the "unsatisfactory state of affairs" in the camps: administrative arbitrariness and excessive exploitation of forced labor resulting in physical exhaustion and mortality of prisoners and also, in extreme cases, riots in the colonies. He saw the causes of what was happening in the ignorance of the camp staff, their lack of humanity or, in other words, the low level of their general and professional culture on the one hand, and on the other hand - in the introduction of self-sufficiency in the camp economy, which entailed economizing on food supplies, hygiene and care products, etc. for the prisoners. The prosecutor offered to remedy the situation in the camps by means of educating the camp staff about socialist morality, exemplary punishment of the guilty, and strengthening of supervision measures, i.e. essentially habitual and inefficient methods of the Soviet penitentiary system. Nevertheless, D. Kulyapin's reports diagnosed the state of affairs in the postwar Gulag quite adequately.
On the basis of published and archival ego-documents, the article reconstructs the stories of military medical assistant Timofei M. Malygin and junior lieutenant of the Red Army Vladimir S. Nyrkin who were held captive by the Germans for a short period of time in 1941–1942. These stories are of interest because in addition to the event-related aspect associated with the captivity of the Red Army commanders and their subsequent escape, there are hidden mental structures of the narrative: fatalism, high level of adaptability to circumstances, willpower, enterprise, ability to find non-standard solutions, and rejection of any kind of racial superiority and humiliation. The article consists of 5 main sections and brief conclusions. In the first section, the authors characterize the explanatory concept adopted by them within the framework of the anthropological perspective of historical knowledge. We were interested in particular instances that allow us to see what cannot be descried in a universal historical perspective: characteristic features of time and place, people's actions and relationships described by those people. The article focuses on the participation of both main characters in helping the wounded Soviet prisoners of war. The second section contains a brief historiographical overview of the subject of and presents methods for working with sources, among which are the records of interrogations of Vladimir S. Nyrkin and Timofei M. Malygin in the investigative bodies of the NKVD. Three subsequent sections reveal the stages of being in captivity: the act of being taken captive, being held in captivity, and escape. The conclusion summarizes the results of the study. Despite their privileged position, the Red Army commanders fled from the camp at the first opportunity: V. Nyrkin established contact with the partisans, and T. Malygin used available material resources and exchanged valuables and money for the local residents' services necessary for the escape. Authentic German documents related to the topic are presented in the article in the form of illustrations: a "passport" handwritten by a German military doctor and a typewritten "Ausweis" signed by the commandant of the transit camp for prisoners of war in the city of Smolensk.
