"Over the past generation, the rise of East Asia and especially China, has brought about a sea change in the economic and political world order. At the same time, global warming, environmental degradation, food and water shortages, population explosion, and income inequities have created a perfect storm that threatens the very survival of humanity. It is clear now that the Westphalian model of individual sovereign states seeking their own self-interest will not be able to respond effectively to this win-win or lose-lose crisis. In this volume, a cadre of distinguished scholars comes together to reflect on Confucianism and Deweyan pragmatism as possible resources for a new geopolitics that begins from an ontology of interdependence and recognizes the irreducibly ecological nature of the human experience at every level. Pan'gyesurok (or "Pan'gye's Random Jottings") was written by the Korean scholar and social critic Yu Hyngwn(1622-1673), who proposed to reform the Joseon dynasty and realise an ideal Confucian society. It was recognised as a leading work of political science by Yu's contemporaries and continues to be a key text in understanding the intellectual culture of the late Joseon period. Yu describes the problems of the political and social realities of 17th Century Korea, reporting on his attempts to solve these problems using a Confucian philosophical approach. In doing so, he establishes most of the key terminology relating to politics and society in Korea in the late Joseon. His writings were used as a model for reforms within Korea over the following centuries, inspiring social pioneers like Yi Ik and Chng Yakyong. Pan'gyesurok demonstrates how Confucian thought spread outside China and how it was modified to fit the situation on the Korean peninsula. What might a viable political alternative to liberal democracy look like? In Against Political Equality, Tongdong Bai offers a possibility inspired by Confucian ideas. Bai argues that domestic governance influenced by Confucianism can embrace the liberal aspects of democracy along with the democratic ideas of equal opportunities and governmental accountability to the people. But Confucianism would give more political decision-making power to those with the moral, practical, and intellectual capabilities of caring for the people. While most democratic thinkers still focus on strengthening equality to cure the ills of democracy, the proposed hybrid regime-made up of Confucian-inspired meritocratic characteristics combined with democratic elements and a quasi-liberal system of laws and rights-recognizes that egalitarian qualities sometimes conflict with good governance and the protection of liberties, and defends liberal aspects by restricting democratic ones. Bai applies his views to the international realm by supporting a hierarchical order based on how humane each state is toward its own and other peoples, and on the principle of international interventions whereby humane responsibilities override sovereignty. Résumé L'histoire de la République turque ne se confond pas avec celle de la démocratie. Elle rejoint avant tout celle de l'État. « L'État turc est une République », dit d'ailleurs le premier article de la Constitution de 1982. L'avènement de la République a signifié la consécration d'un État réformé que l'on s'employait à moderniser depuis plus d'un siècle dans le cadre d'un Empire moribond. Mais cet État réformé devenu réformateur n'était pas à l'origine un État de droit. Ce n'est qu'après la Seconde Guerre mondiale dans le contexte d'un passage un peu précipité à la démocratie que les idées de séparation des pouvoirs et d'État de droit ont commencé à prendre corps. Aujourd'hui, la candidature à l'Union européenne et la nécessité de satisfaire aux fameux critères de Copenhague ont accéléré un processus d'émancipation politique qui révèlent aussi les changements profonds que connaît la société turque depuis une dizaine d'années.
