American Empire and the Canadian Oil Sands shows that the unconventional fossil fuels revolution that is taking place in North America must be understood in light of the great power status of the US. Development of the Canadian oil sands would enhance the political position of the US on the world stageℓ́ℓboth by powering its domestic economy and giving the US a potentially important asset as conventional fossil fuels are declining (e.g., peak oil). While the unconventional fossil fuels revolution in North America has obvious geopolitical implications, it also holds tremendous potential for causing environmental damageℓ́ℓboth in terms of global warming and the local and regional damage created by extracting Canadian oil sands and natural gas and oil from shale.

The post-retirement aging process involves making many decisions. Strained social welfare programs for the elderly have met with a generation well-versed in 'do-it-yourself' projects resulting in a novel script for DIY retirement, aging and dying. For decades baby boomers in North America and Europe have valorized personal freedom and independence and are now carrying these values into retirement. Some are seeking tenable, independent retirement options abroad in response to inadequate retirement savings, a fear of rising medical costs and lack of faith in local and state systems. Based on ethnographic research among diverse retirees in North America and Europe this paper argues that age-inscriptions and retirement are actively being rewritten by those compelled to DIY.

This article considers culture in the explanation of the gap between North America and Europe in the area of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Thanks to a comparison of Canada and France, the article distinguishes between two cultures of GMO risk management: the culture of managerial rationality (Canada) and the culture of integration (France). The first culture provides proponents of scientific neutrality the tools to preserve itself from external criticisms. In contrast, the second culture creates a proper environment for its contestation from within. When the democratization of science became an issue in the 1990s, the culture of integration transformed itself significantly, allowing debates within risk management processes. This change contributed to the gap between Europe and North America over GMOs.

Emerald ash borer Agrilus planipennis (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) is one of 20 priority quarantine pests of the European Union. It is native to Asia and is established in the USA, Canada, European Russia, and Ukraine. We made the first prognosis of the potential range of A. planipennis in Europe based on heat availability. Mean annual growing degree days base 10 °C (AGDD10) was calculated for each grid square (0.25° × 0.25° latitude x longitude degrees) on the Earth's surface. Minimal AGDD10 recorded in the grid squares currently occupied by A. planipennis was 714° in Asia, 705° in North America, and 711° in European Russia. Agrilus planipennis has never been recorded in localities with AGDD10 below 700°. If the phenotypic plasticity would not allow this species to overcome this threshold, cold regions of Europe would probably not be invaded by A. planipennis. Thus, Fraxinus excelsior could potentially escape from A. planipennis in some regions of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Ireland, and Great Britain.

Illustrations of renewal and revitalization among present-day Native Americans, and an interpretation of their wider significance for our contemporary world are examined. In the second chapter, the relatedness of First America Inhabitants is explored with Pacific Islanders by using autosomal genetic markers: the HLA alleles. HLA is the most polymorphic human genetic system and is most useful for comparing populations' relatedness. The ethnic groups of Pacific Islanders, First America inhabitants and other World Populations were used. The authors of the third chapter use longitudinal data to examine mediational mechanisms that account for the relationship between ethnic identity and self-esteem among American Indian youth. Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) are territorial subdivisions of a city in which property owners or businesses decide to self-impose an additional tax meant for the promotion & development of the area through services such as garbage collection, street maintenance, & security patrols. They were created in North America since the late 1960s and, though they embody many of the powers & privileges of the state, bear none of the responsibilities & limitations of democratic government. Since the early 1990s BIDs found their way due to a fast policy transfer across the Atlantic: First to the UK & now finally to Germany. Here they are regarded either as an offer the local business community cannot afford to refuse (ie., some Chambers of Commerce) or as "civil society in action" (parts of the Green Party). Others regard them as questionable under constitutional law & as an instrument to privatize cities (the civil rights movement) or as "the next step towards further exclusion" of disadvantaged groups (ie., churches & homeless service providers). This paper presents some preliminary empirical reflexions about rural development in North East Argentina at the light of the recent socio-economic and political changes. The processes of decentralization that have taken place in the country during the decade of 1990 illustrate the complexity of rural development strategies at local level and the necessity to create policies to take into account the collective actions from below or to promote them in those territories where they do not exist. These kind of collective actions are considered by some authors to play an important role in processes of democratization.
