Changes in voter behavior in European democratic nations are examined. Data accumulated from various sources that measure electoral participation, volatility, support for new political parties, & support for environmental & extreme Right parties in various European nations (N = 15) from the 1950s-1990s are analyzed. Several findings are reported: although voting participation is down over the interval, voters demonstrated a greater willingness to support different parties; the number of voters who supported new parties increased throughout the late 20th century; despite increases in support to environmental & extreme Right parties, the gains realized by these parties are not deemed significant. It is concluded that European voters have generally become more disengaged from political participation & traditional political parties during the late 20th century & that European political parties must utilize innovative methods of party competition & cooperation to reduce indifference among national electorates. 5 Tables.
