Based on theories of expectations of technology and empirical data from expert interviews and case studies, this research article explores how actors in the field of public interest technologies relate to and within the dynamics of AI hype. On an affirmative note, practitioners and experts see the potential that AI hype can serve their own purposes, e.g., through improved funding and support structures. At the same time, public interest tech actors distance themselves from the dynamics of AI hype and criticize it explicitly. Finally, the article discusses how engagement with AI hype and its impact affects society as a whole and, more specifically, society's ability to develop and use technologies in response to societal problems.

Wie haben unterschiedliche Lebenserfahrungen und Verhaltensnormen der Geschlechter musikalische Kultur geprägt - in Kompositionen, in Biographien, in der Rezeption, in der Inszenierung und Vermittlung von Musik? 20 Autorinnen aus Deutschland, Österreich und den USA gehen diesen Fragen nach und vermitteln damit einen facettenreichen Einblick in den gegenwärtigen Stand der musikwissenschaftlichen Frauen- und Geschlechterforschung

AbstractWhile science communication is increasingly being discussed as a third mission alongside research and teaching, there is little research on how universities and research organizations deal with issues regarding the quality of science communication. This article examines, from an organizational perspective, which new forms of quality assurance processes scientific organizations in Germany apply when addressing quality risks for science communication such as exaggeration in press releases or in the online communication of individual faculty members. Six focus group discussions were conducted with 22 participants (rectors or presidents of universities, heads of communication, ombudsmen, and high-impact researchers). Based on the results, proposals were developed to extend central as well as decentral organizational structures to assure good scientific communication practice. Their possible implementation was discussed in a workshop with representatives of all abovementioned groups. In conclusion, recommendations for future institutional policy are presented.

Are children and adolescents relevant disease vectors when it comes to the transmission of SARS-CoV-2? Moreover, do they play a role as relevant disease vectors in a school or kindergarten setting? These questions could not be sufficiently answered at the beginning of the pandemic. Consequently, schools and childcare facilities were closed to stop the spread of SARS-CoV‑2. Over the past few months, researchers have gained a more detailed understanding of the overall pandemic situation. The SARS-CoV‑2 infection rate in children below 10 years of age in 2020 has been substantially lower than in adults. In addition, it showed that children had a milder course of disease. Although a majority of the analyses performed in schools and childcare facilities revealed that the virus is transmitted in these facilities, these transmissions did not, however, have a considerable influence on the overall rate of new infections. Despite these findings, German politicians continue to advocate for the closure of childcare facilities, including schools, to fight the pandemic, whereas many specialist societies such as the German Society for Pediatric Infectious Diseases (DGPI) have emphasized that such closures should be the measure of last resort in combating the pandemic. The same message is also conveyed by a German evidence-based S3 guideline established by an interdisciplinary expert group that had already put forward clear recommendations for high incidences in the general population at the beginning of February 2021, indicating that school closures were only required in exceptional cases. In this article, we would like to outline the situation based on the currently available data, try to predict the future, and discuss the circumstances necessary to realize normal classroom teaching without accepting the risk of an uncontrolled spread of SARS-CoV‑2.

Science is increasingly expected to help in solving complex societal problems in collaboration
with societal stakeholders. However, it is often unclear under what conditions this can happen, i.e., what kind of challenges occur when science interacts with society and what kind of quality expectations prevail. This is particularly pertinent for Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH),
which are part of the object they study and whose knowledge is always subject to provisionality. Here we discuss how SSH researchers can contribute to adressing societal problems, what challenges might occur when they interact with societal stakeholders, and what quality expectations arise in these arrangements. We base our argumentation on the results of an online consultation among 125 experts in Germany (representatives from SSH, learned societies, stakeholders from different societal groups, and relevant intermediaries).

Background: This conceptual paper aims to illustrate the ways in which communities are able to advance health improvements on a population level. Outcome measures may include increased physical activity and healthier eating habits in particular, as well as an improved health-related quality of life and social cohesion as more generic outcomes. Main body: The paper begins by asking initial questions: Why did previous health-specific interventions only show moderate effects on an individual level and mixed effects on a population level? What is the added value of a community-based public health perspective compared to the traditional biomedical perspective when it comes to prevention? Why are we living the way we are living? Why do we eat what we eat? Why do we move the way we move? Subsequently, we illustrate the broad spectrum of contextual interventions available to communities. These can have geographical and technological as well as economic, political, normative and attitude-specific dimensions. It is shown that communities have a strong influence on health-related contexts and decision-making of adults, adolescents and children. In addition contextual characteristics, effects, mediators, moderators and consequences relevant for health can differ greatly between age groups. Both small-scale settings and overarching sectors possess physical, economic, political and sociocultural characteristics that can be proactively influenced by community decision-makers in the sense of a "health in all policies"-strategy. Short conclusion: After presenting various interdisciplinary approaches to community-based health interventions, the manuscript closes with the following core message: Successful community-based health promotion strategies consist of multilevel – multicomponent interventions on the micro, meso and macro-level-environments.

Die Aufsätze beinhalten Ergebnisse abgeschlossener Studien zu den Themenfeldern Berufsalltag, Universität, Karriereplanung und Statuspassagen sowie familiärer und lebensweltlicher Kontext, die im Rahmen einer Tagung der Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung im Oktober 2003 zum Thema 'Frauen in der Wissenschaft' vorgestellt wurden. Es wurden auch die konkreten Erfahrungshorizonte von Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen thematisiert sowie Förderprogramme der gezielten Karriereplanung und -unterstützung speziell für Frauen vorgestellt. Nach einem kurzen Überblick des 'State of the Art' zum Bereich 'Frauen in Wissenschaft und Forschung', vermittelt der erste Beitrag gestützt auf die Ergebnisse einer Vollerhebung unter Professorinnen in sechs Fachdisziplinen sowie einer männlichen Vergleichsgruppe, einen Eindruck von der Komplexität des Hochschulberufs, des wissenschaftlichen Werdegangs der Professorinnen, ihrer aktuellen Arbeitssituation sowie der außeruniversitären Kontexte. Der nächste Beitrag stellt Ergebnisse einer qualitativen Untersuchung vor zum Karriereweg, der Karriereplanung und der aktuellen Lebenssituation von Nachwuchswissenschaftlern und Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen ausgewählter Disziplinen. Des weiteren werden Ergebnisse einer Panelstudie vorgestellt, in der die Frage untersucht wurde, warum so wenige Frauen letztlich Spitzenpositionen in Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft erreichen. Dem schließen sich Ergebnisse einer qualitativen Studie an zu den Problemen und Potentialen von Doppelkarrieren in Wirtschaft und Wissenschaft, in der sich zeigt, dass die Ermöglichung der Doppelkarriere nicht selten vom männlich dominierten mittleren Management gezielt konterkarriert wird. Abschließend wird argumentiert, dass auf der individuellen Ebene Vernetzungen und ein gezieltes Mentoring von Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen für einen erfolgreichen Karriereweg im Wissenschaftsbetrieb unbedingt erforderlich sind. Hintergrund: In der Coronaviruspandemie nehmen 2 Institutionen eine zentrale Rolle in der evidenzbasierten Einordnung des Geschehens für Politik und Bevölkerung ein. Das Robert Koch-Institut (RKI) koordiniert die Pandemiebekämpfung, erstellt fundierte Empfehlungen für medizinisches Fachpersonal, die Medien sowie die Bevölkerung und berät die Politik. Die Bundeszentrale für gesundheitliche Aufklärung (BZgA) informiert die Bevölkerung und Institutionen. Ziel der Arbeit: Mit dem COVID-19 Snapshot Monitoring (COSMO) wird beobachtet, ob und wie sich das Vertrauen in Institutionen über die Pandemie verändert. Es wird untersucht, welche Bevölkerungsgruppen Vertrauen zeigen und wie dies mit Einstellungen, Risikowahrnehmung und Verhaltensweisen zusammenhängt. Material und Methoden: In Querschnittstudien werden seit März 2020 die Risikowahrnehmung, das Verhalten und die Akzeptanz von Maßnahmen sowie das Vertrauen in Institutionen mit etwa N = 1000 Befragten pro Erhebung untersucht. Ergebnisse: Das Vertrauen in RKI und BZgA war generell hoch, sank aber über den Verlauf der Pandemie. Höheres Vertrauen ging für beide Institutionen mit höherem Alter der Befragten, höherer Bildung, höherer Risikowahrnehmung und höherer Akzeptanz von Maßnahmen einher. Verhaltensweisen wie Abstandhalten und Händewaschen wurden häufiger gezeigt. Männer und chronisch Erkrankte zeigten geringeres Vertrauen. Diskussion: Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Vertrauen weiter gefördert werden sollte. Dies könnte u. a. erreicht werden, indem in der Entwicklung und Begründung von Strategien und Maßnahmen auch die Sichtweise der Bevölkerung (z. B. durch COSMO) berücksichtigt wird. Objectives: To decrease the rapid growth of SARS-CoV-2 in Germany, a stepped lockdown was conducted. Acceptance and compliance regarding entering and exiting lockdown measures are key for their success. The aim of the present study was to analyse the population's preferences for exiting lockdown measures. Methods: To evaluate population's preferences and identify trade-offs between different exit strategies, a discrete choice experiment was conducted on 28–29 April (n = 1,020). Overall, six attributes and 16 choice sets (fractional-factorial design) without an opt-out were chosen. Conditional logit and latent class models were conducted. Results: Most attributes proved to be significant. Two attributes dominated all others: Avoiding a mandatory tracing app, and providing sufficient intensive care capacities. Preventing a high long-term unemployment rate and avoiding the isolation of persons aged 70+, were relevant, though utilities were comparatively lower. We identified subgroups (elderly persons and persons with school children) with different utilities, which indicates specific attributes affecting them dissimilarly. Conclusions: The population prefers cautious re-opening strategies and is at least sceptical about the adoption of severe protection measures. Government should balance interests between subgroups.

Das vorliegende Thesenpapier befasst sich mit wissenschaftlicher Politikberatung mittels schriftlicher Beratungsdokumente. Ziel des Papiers ist es, für alle Beteiligten der Beratungssituation ein verbessertes Verständnis dieser Übersetzungsleistung zu schaffen und darauf aufbauend praxisnahe Hinweise für die Erstellung und Nutzung wissenschaftlicher Beratungsdokumenten zu geben. Das Thesenpapier beruht auf der Auswertung von insgesamt 51 qualitativen Interviews mit Akteuren aus Wissenschaft und Politik. Als Beratungsdokumente verstehen wir schriftliche Ausarbeitungen, die wissenschaftliches Wissen und fachliche Expertise an Entscheidungsträger*innen in Politik und Verwaltung vermitteln, um diese zu fundierten Entscheidungen zu befähigen. an der sich ein Übersetzungsbedarf ergibt. Diese Dokumente stehen also an der Schnittstelle zwischen Wissenschaft und Politik, an der sich ein Übersetzungsbedarf ergibt. Die Erstellung eines Beratungsdokuments lässt sich idealtypisch in folgende Schritte unterteilen: Themensetzung, Wissensauswahl, Komplexitätsreduktion, Revision, Verbreitung und Evaluierung. Unabhängig davon, ob Beratung von Seiten der Wissenschaft angeboten oder von der Politik nachgefragt wird, entsteht eine Spannung zwischen wissenschaftlichen Werten und politischem Nutzen. In Abhängigkeit vom Kommunikationsziel, ist diese höher oder niedriger. Die Politik verfügt über eine breite Wissensökologie, in der die Wissenschaft nur als eine Quelle neben weiteren Quellen steht, und das Beratungsdokument nur ein Medium der Beratung neben vielen anderen ist. Der politische Nutzen von Beratung(sdokumenten) ist abgeleitet aus der Erfordernis von politischen Akteuren, sich in öffentlichen Debatten zu positionieren: also hilft ihnen das Dokument dabei entweder eine eigene Position zu einem Thema zu finden oder sie zu festigen? Während bei der Erstellung von Beratungsdokumenten Sorgfalt, Gründlichkeit der Analyse, Validität von Daten und Präzision in der Begrifflichkeit hochrangige Kriterien darstellen, die üblicherweise in einen langwierigen Prozess der Erstellung münden, ist die politische Seite im Bedarfsfall in einer Situation am "Rande der Krise". Politische Akteure müssen sich öffentlich positionieren in Situationen von Dringlichkeit, nicht selten überlagert von Unsicherheit und manchmal auch noch geprägt von Bedrohlichkeit.
