Seeking to broaden the view of what constitutes the role of entrepreneurial universities in transitional economies, this chapter discusses the way in which Higher Education in Indonesia has over several decades used service learning programmes to contribute to rural development and encourage the growth of small village enterprises. In recent years, programmes bringing together universities and local government have introduced sophisticated initiatives designed to empower rural communities politically, socially and economically. Central to the new thinking has been the engagement of students in seeking to identify the immediate needs and the potential of communities to develop their own local entrepreneurial ventures. At the same time, units within universities, working closely with government ministries, and using the insights gained from student reporting, are focusing on specific projects that can create sustainable economic and social development. It is still too early to gauge the success of this new integrated approach. Nonetheless, the projects described in the chapter demonstrate that the concept of entrepreneurial universities should not be limited to teaching and research activity or the establishment of campus hubs, but should also incorporate the potential for direct engagement at grass-root sites in which students have a major role to play as facilitators and knowledge brokers.

"Going Green—Education for Sustainability," a German-American blended learning project for the EFL and STEM classrooms, asks students to challenge commonly held stereotypes about how both cultures approach sustainable development. Since the pilot project (2014), over 3,000 secondary school students in Germany and the US have enrolled in a shared learning management system (Moodle), worked collaboratively both online and offline, developed green action plans and shared them with the school and wider community as part of a competition. This article outlines the conceptual perspective of Going Green that includes the aspects of (a) teaching 'publics,' (b) countering expectations and misconceptions, (c) raising awareness of counter-narratives, and (d) expanding the knowledge base of the target culture (sustainable policies in the US). These components together facilitate learning objectives beyond interactional and communicative competencies by promoting learner agency and community-based actions. Attitudinal data drawn from the last two project cycles (2016–17, 2017–18) reflect a heterogeneous view of learners' expectations and understandings regarding sustainable policies in the US and Germany. Finally, we investigate how narratives and counter-narratives of sustainable development on both sides of the Atlantic can be exploited in the technology-enhanced foreign language classroom in order to facilitate the aforementioned goals.

The European Partnership for Alternative Approaches to Animal Testing (EPAA) convened a 'Blue Sky Workshop' on new ideas for non-animal approaches to predict repeated-dose systemic toxicity. The aim of the Workshop was to formulate strategic ideas to improve and increase the applicability, implementation and acceptance of modern non-animal methods to determine systemic toxicity. The Workshop concluded that good progress is being made to assess repeated dose toxicity without animals taking advantage of existing knowledge in toxicology, thresholds of toxicological concern, adverse outcome pathways and read-across workflows. These approaches can be supported by New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) utilising modern molecular technologies and computational methods. Recommendations from the Workshop were based around the needs for better chemical safety assessment: how to strengthen the evidence base for decision making; to develop, standardise and harmonise NAMs for human toxicity; and the improvement in the applicability and acceptance of novel techniques. "Disruptive thinking" is required to reconsider chemical legislation, validation of NAMs and the opportunities to move away from reliance on animal tests. Case study practices and data sharing, ensuring reproducibility of NAMs, were viewed as crucial to the improvement of non-animal test approaches for systemic toxicity.

Objective: To assess the perceptions and practices related to menstruation among adolescent girls of rural and urban schools. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study conducted at selected government as well as private schools of rural and urban areas. Adolescent girls of age group between 10-17 years who have attained menarche were enrolled in the study. Data regarding socio-demographic profile, knowledge, practices, and perception related to menstruation was obtained using a predefined questionnaire. Results: The study enrolled 350 girls from rural and 350 girls from urban schools. Maternal education was found to be higher in an urban setting as compared to the rural setting. Genital hygiene practices and usage of the sanitary pad were significantly better amongst urban girls as compared to rural girls (p<0.01). About 35% of girls in the urban setting and 26% of rural settings were mentally prepared for menarche. Most of the girls were forced to follow various types of restrictions like going to the temple, entering into the kitchen, etc during menstruation in both the settings. Conclusion: There is poor mental preparedness for menstruation before attaining menarche, poor hygienic practices, and negative perception regarding menstruation among adolescent girls. This requires educational intervention involving both young girls and their mothers.

This paper aims to critically analyse the Estonian People's Assembly (EPA), a crowdsourcing initiative carried out from 2013 to 2014. During the project, citizens could participate in decision-making and make proposals for laws and policies on a dedicated web-platform. Additionally, some people were invited for a traditional off-line debate. In that way, the project combined virtual communication tools with traditional discussion to apply the principles of collaborative e-democracy, in which governmental stakeholders and non-governmental stakeholders (such as local communities) join in a deliberative debate. The purpose of this paper is to observe, both, gains and problems of this crowdsourcing initiative. The analysis considered the design of the online space, if people had equal access to it, and the kind of issues proposed. It also applied critical discourse analysis (following Fairclough, 1995) and the index Quality of Understanding (Klinger & Russmann, 2015). As a conclusion, the paper suggests that virtual platforms can increase the quality of deliberative decision-making. However, they can also be seen as regulated "top-down" initiatives (Pellizzoni, 2012). In a wider perspective, the paper aims to contribute to knowledge on, both, positive and negative stances of deliberative crowdsource initiatives in a post-web society. ; peerReviewed

This activity is based on potensial of Tete Batu Village as agricultural area so that the availability of agricultural waste is abundant and so far it has not been used optimally as animal feed. Community service activities are carried out by providing materials on the technology of processing agricultural waste using various fermenters and local feed ingredients that can be used as alternative feed ingredients, then continuing the practice of processing livestock waste into liquid organic ferlizer and processing agricultural waste into silage. The service activity was attended by the Lombok Regional Government which involved in fostering livestock, head and management of Tete Batu, the livestock farming community, alumni and student, avarage 40 people. The community service activities have succeeded in increasing the knowledge and skills of breeders in processing livestock waste into liquid organic ferlizer which can be used to increase the fertility of agricultural plants and become products that can be sold so as to increase the income of the livestock farming community. Community service activities have resulted in good commitment from the livestock farming community, village administrators and related local government agencies to assist livestock farming communities in processing agricultural and livestock waste into useful products.

Due to the versatility of the drone, it can be applied in various areas and for different uses and as a practical support for human activities. In particular, this paper focuses on the situation in Italy and how the authorities use drones for the search and rescue of missing persons, especially now that a 10-year plague that has afflicted Italy with a large number of such incidents annually. Knowledge of the current legislation, the implementation of the drone with other instruments, specific pilot training, and experiential contributions are all essential elements that can provide exceptional assistance in search and rescue operations. However, to guarantee maximum effectiveness of the rescue device, they should seriously consider including teams with proven expertise in operating drones and count on their valuable contribution. Besides drones&rsquo ; capacity to search large areas, thereby reducing the use of human resources and possibly limiting intervention times, to operate in difficult terrain and/or dangerous conditions for rescue teams, remote sensing tools (such as GPR or ground penetrating radar) as well as other disciplines (such as forensic archeology and, more generally, forensic geosciences) can be implemented to carry out search and rescue missions in case of missing persons.

The nature of regional cooperation on capacity building taking place in Southeast Asia certainly provides a good foundation to pursue a more robust collaborative framework for nuclear security in the wider Asia-Pacific region. A step in this regard is to have a regional action plan/roadmap for nuclear security in the Asia-Pacific that could institutionalize cooperation between Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and other countries in the wider region, fostering closer collaboration. The paper recommends three practical mechanisms to expand cooperation frameworks in Southeast Asia to the broader Asia-Pacific region: (1) strengthening regional capacity building in nuclear security; (2) establishing an ASEAN-Northeast Asia network of nuclear security centers of excellence (COEs) and knowledge centers; and (3) enhancing regional nuclear emergency preparedness and response. The tomato potato psyllid (TPP), Bactericera cockerelli, is a psyllid native to North America that has recently invaded New Zealand and Australia. The potential for economic losses accompanying invasions of TPP and its associated bacterial plant pathogen Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum (CLso), has caused much concern. Here, we employed ecological niche models to predict environments suitable for TPP/CLso on a global scale and then evaluated the extent to which global potato cultivation is at risk. In addition, at a finer scale the risk to the Australian potato acreage was evaluated. A total of 86 MaxEnt models were built using various combinations of settings and climatic predictors, and the best model based on model evaluation metrics was selected. Climatically suitable habitats were identified in Eurasia, Africa, South America, and Australasia. Intersecting the predicted suitability map with land use data showed that 79.06% of the global potato cultivation acreage, 96.14% of the potato production acreage in South America and Eurasia, and all the Australian potato cropping areas are at risk. The information generated by this study increases knowledge of the ecology of TPP/CLso and can be used by government agencies to make decisions about preventing the spread of TPP and CLso across the globe.

Hepatitis A is a fecal oral disease which is still a public health problem in Indonesia. The Pacitan Regency Government has determined an extraordinary event (KLB) of Hepatitis A since June 25th, 2019, there were 1,310 confirmed cases. This research aims to determine the relation between well contamination and the incidence of Hepatitis A.This study used a case control design by means of observation and measurement of 36 dug wells randomly selected from 18 cases and 18 controls based on inclusion criteria. The water microbiology examination was carried out at the Surabaya Health Polytechnic Laboratory with the Most Probable Number (MPN) method, and the data analysis technique used was the serial point coefficient correlation.The results suggested that all observed well water was contaminated by E. coli bacteria, and more than half of them did not meet the construction requirements, namely from the aspect of distance from pollutant sources, walls, lips and well floors. The analysis results suggested a relation between Escherichia coli contamination and well construction (p-value = 0.036). However, it did not show a significant relation with the incidence of Hepatitis A (p-Value = 0.514).Improved well construction, increased knowledge, and hygiene behavior are efforts of which must be made in managing Hepatitis A.

This study aims to identify strategic actions towards climate resilient livelihoods and secure income for smallholder farmers in Thai Nguyen province of Vietnam using a systems approach and system dynamic modelling tools. Information and data for this research was collected through surveys, interviews, focus group discussions and workshops with relevant stakeholders and 187 farmers in two vulnerable districts during October 2019–April 2020. Findings of this study uncovered a number of shortcomings of the government policies and approaches in climate change adaptation. Local initiatives, community learning and ownership seem to be neglected. This research has substantiated the effectiveness and validity of systems approaches and tools in structuring and solving complex issues in agricultural research and development under the interwoven relationships between environmental and human factors. Climate resilient production models and practices are just part of the systemic interventions that need to be implemented in a coordinated manner towards a more resilient future of the farming communities. This study has addressed the current knowledge gap and the need for using integrated approaches and decision support systems for unravelling ill-structured and/or complex issues of climate change adaptation (CCA). It also provided practical recommendations for informed CCA policies and implementation.

Plastics are used ubiquitously and have become part of our everyday life. The global production of plastics is rising, which in consequence is leading to increasing amounts of plastics being released into the environment. Recently, the issue of human exposure to micro‐ and nanoplastic particles and potentially resulting toxicological consequences has been broached, triggered by the discovery of microplastics in foodstuff. In addition to dietary exposure via contaminated food and beverages, other exposure paths such as via air and cosmetics, have to be considered. Currently there is no legislation for microplastics and nanoplastics as contaminants in food. Substantial data gaps with respect to exposure as well as toxicity of such particles impede the risk assessment. Within this EU‐FORA fellowship project, a comprehensive data mining approach was followed, focusing on up‐to‐date knowledge on the occurrence and possible toxic effects associated with micro‐ and nanoplastics after oral exposure, especially via food products and beverages, in order to provide a basis for risk assessment and to identify important research gaps. The fellowship project was further complemented by practical work aimed at the determination of in vitro toxicity of micro‐sized polylactic acid particles.

Background: The substandard vaccine case of that broke out in July 2018 in China triggered an outburst of news reports both domestically and aboard. Distilling the abundant textual information is helpful for a better understanding of the character during this public event. Methods: We collected the texts of 2211 news reports from 83 mainstream media outlets in China between 15 July and 25 August 2018, and used a structural topic model (STM) to identify the major topics and features that emerged. We also used dictionary-based sentiment analysis to uncover the sentiments expressed by the topics as well as their temporal variations. Results: The main topics of the news report fell into six major categories, including: (1) Media Investigation, (2) Response from the Top Authority, (3) Government Action, (4) Knowledge Dissemination, (5) Finance Related and (6) Commentary. The topic prevalence shifted during different stages of the events, illustrating the actions by the government. Sentiments generally spanned from negative to positive, but varied according to different topics. Conclusion: The characteristics of news reports on vaccines are shaped by various topics at different stages. The inner dynamics of the topic and its alterations are driven by the interaction between social sentiment and governmental intervention.

The ears are air-filled structures that are directly impacted during blast exposure. In addition to hearing loss and tinnitus, blast victims often complain of vertigo, dizziness and unsteady posture, suggesting that blast exposure induces damage to the vestibular end organs in the inner ear. However, the underlying mechanisms remain to be elucidated. In this report, single vestibular afferent activity and the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) were investigated before and after exposure to blast shock waves (∼20 PSI) delivered into the left external ear canals of anesthetized rats. Single vestibular afferent activity was recorded from the superior branch of the left vestibular nerves of the blast-treated and control rats one day after blast exposure. Blast exposure reduced the spontaneous discharge rates of the otolith and canal afferents. Blast exposure also reduced the sensitivity of irregular canal afferents to sinusoidal head rotation at 0.5–2Hz. Blast exposure, however, resulted in few changes in the VOR responses to sinusoidal head rotation and translation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that reports blast exposure-induced damage to vestibular afferents in an animal model. These results provide insights that may be helpful in developing biomarkers for early diagnosis of blast-induced vestibular deficits in military and civilian populations.

Background: Perceived severity and susceptibility refers to one's belief of the seriousness and the risk of contracting a specific disease. It is an essential study in public health as it assists in the understanding of the motivating factors towards disease prevention. This qualitative study aimed to explore perceived severity and susceptibility towards leptospirosis infection among respondents in two states of Malaysia. Methods: Focus group discussions using the phenomenology approach was conducted involving 72 respondents in Selangor and Kelantan. Data were examined using content analysis. Results: Respondents perceived leptospirosis infection as severe due to its poor disease prognosis and complications. However, some rated it less severe when compared with other chronic diseases such as cancer and AIDS. Their perceptions were influenced by their knowledge about the disease, media portrayal and frequency of health campaigns by the government. All respondents believed they were not susceptible to the disease. Conclusion: The low perceived susceptibility of leptospirosis infection is a matter of concern as it may contribute to respondents' lack of motivation towards preventing the disease. The study findings may provide the basis for health promotional activities designed to heighten public perceived threat towards leptospirosis infection and thereby improving preventive health behaviors for avoiding leptospirosis.
