The impact of generational renewal on political and civic life is often neglected in public and scientific debates. The disinterest is due, among other things, to the contributions and overall pervasiveness of research on primary socialization and life-cycle effects, as well as a tendency in research to adopt a Mannheimian perspective on political generations. In fact, cohort analysis of French self-placement on the left or right of the political spectrum since the 1970s brings to light major changes. Generational renewal is not politically neutral: it handicaps the right while bringing about an increase in the proportion of "non-aligned." Moreover, studying generational renewal reveals a profound transformation of the notions of left and right in France, due to the new importance of cultural issues and redefined attitudes toward politics generally and voting in particular.

Some effects persist and others, such as birth cohort or education, have become more important, particularly in the 2007 vote in the presidential election. This article tries to explain both the changes in social logics of voting during the last four presidential elections in France, and what has not changed. By discussing and extending the theories of 'old' and'new' politics, this article shows that evolutions are due not to a change in the values system, but to the politicization of cultural values by the mainstream French parties. This "two axis politics" has major consequences, and new social logics of voting have begun to establish themselves. Some social groups, such as workers or the professional classes are affected, whereas others such as atheists or the self-employed are not.

Like other European democracies, France appears to be moving towards a 'new politics'. Cultural issues such as immigration and multiculturalism are now said to be more influential on voting behaviour than socioeconomic issues. In this paper we question the impact of values on the French presidential elections since 1988 and show that: (1) both new and old politics are playing a role; (2) this two-axis politics is the result of a transition period begun in 1995 and accomplished in 2007; and (3) it has changed dramatically the way parties (including the Union pour un Mouvement Populaire and the Socialist Party) and voters interact with each other. Enfin, la cohorte de naissance ou le diplôme émergent dans les explications du vote en 2007. Il s'agit ici d'expliquer les permanences et les mutations des logiques sociales du vote lors des quatre dernières élections présidentielles. En discutant et prolongeant la théorie de la old et de la new politics , on montre que ces évolutions ne sont pas dues à un changement de système de valeurs, mais à la politisation par les grands partis français des valeurs culturelles. Cette « politique des deux axes » a plusieurs conséquences. De nouvelles logiques sociales du vote émergent ; certains groupes sociaux (les cadres, les ouvriers) sont travaillés par des conflits de valeurs, quand d'autres (les « sans religion », les indépendants) n'en sont pas affectés.

L'affaire Merah a remis la question du terrorisme, de l'islam et de l'immigration au centre de l'actualité présidentielle. On peut certes s'interroger sur la pertinence de certaines analyses sommaires considérant les évènements dramatiques de Toulouse et Montauban comme représentatifs de l'état de l'ensemble du processus d'intégration en France ou de la compatibilité entre la religion musulmane et les valeurs de la République1.
