Looking back on post-war U.S.-Japan relations, it becomes clear that fundamental disparities in world views, arising from very difference histories, cultures and geographies were papered over in the interest of pursuing the Cold War. The article examines the origins of the Treaty of Mutual Co-operation and Security between the USA and Japan, rearmament in Japan, its worry about the unknowns of life "beyond the Cold War" and the USA's and Japan's options in their relations for the future. The paper argues that Sino-Soviet detente will continue to strengthen, notwithstanding certain mercurial tendencies, partly as an aspect of the growing demise of bipolarity and the evolution of complex patterns of inter-state interaction in East Asia, partly also through the demands of reform in both countries. Some early indications of how better working relations between Beijing and Moscow could be affecting the Southwestern Pacific region are examined. (DÜI-Sen)
