Bitcoin spearheaded the rise of cryptocurrencies since it was first launched in 2009. The concept of bitcoin as digital currency was first published publicly in the 2008 well-known whitepaper by pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto. The whitepaper outlined a self-serving peer-to-peer transaction network concept based on cryptographic proof instead of trust, allowing any two willing parties to transact directly with each other without the need for a trusted third party such as financial institutions. Since then, thousands of cryptocurrencies have been launched mostly through token offerings as an alternative approach of raising funds for blockchain, technology projects, and start-ups. People are holding cryptocurrencies mostly as digital asset investments. Some individuals made huge profits from buying cryptocurrencies at their initial offerings and sold later when the prices increased. Some crypto millionaires were born from such trades. However, many people lost their investment as well due to many factors. Some were due to bad investment decisions, and some fall into scams and investment programs run by dishonest peoplewith promises of highly lucrative returns. As trading and owning cryptocurrencies are becoming common, governments and policymakers around the world are coming up with proper and comprehensive regulations for cryptocurrencies. In the context of Malaysia, in which zakat collections and distributions are of state matters, this paper discusses the implementation of zakat payment platform for cryptocurrencies at zakat institutions. This paper seeks to contribute to the academic development, blockchain technology, and zakat management.
ABSTRACT: Recently, governmental institutions and private industries in power have been pushed to be more transparent so that more people can have ownership of their data. Another type of institution with a large amount of power over data are educational institutions. Colleges and Universities around the globe store a significant amount of data on millions of students, such as financial aid, grades, dropout or graduation, successes after graduation. Each institution is rated with respect to these items and more, and potential students are making decisions to go to the school based on these ratings. Therefore, it is imperative for students, who invest their time and their money into the school of their choice, to know the truth. In 2017, the College Transparency Act and the Student Right to Know Before You Go Act were passed, which were created to push transparency for data in higher education. The openness of data in higher education will be beneficial to prospective students. The push for these two bills coincided with the bitcoin bubble. In the past three years, experts in economics, medicine, and supply chain management have been researching methods on how to implement blockchains to create optimal and decentralized data systems. In this paper, we propose a model for open data in higher education inspired by the Bitcoin, which uses blockchain. When used together with InterPlanetary File System, a peer-to-peer distributed file system, we can create a decentralized platform that increases accessibility of data and autonomy of prospective students. Auf politischer Ebene hat die Finanzierung von Kleinstunternehmen, kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen (KMU) durch die europäische Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrise eine hohe Bedeutung erhalten, da mehr als 99% aller europäischen Unternehmen in Europa dieser Kategorie angehören. Als Reaktion auf die oftmals schwierige Finanzierungssituation von KMU, die maßgeblich zur Gefährdung der Innovationsfähigkeit und der Entwicklung der europäischen Wirtschaft beitragen kann, wurden spezielle staatliche Programme aufgelegt. Trotz des vermehrten Interesses auf politischer und akademischer Ebene bezüglich KMU-Finanzierung, gibt es jedoch auf europäischer Ebene nur wenig empirische Evidenz. Diese Dissertation beschäftigt sich daher in fünf verschiedenen empirischen Studien zu aktuellen Forschungslücken hinsichtlich der Finanzierung von Kleinstunternehmen, kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen in Europa und mit neuen Finanzierungsinstrumenten für innovative Unternehmen oder Start-Ups. Zunächst wird basierend auf zwei empirischen Untersuchungen (Kapitel 2 und 3) der Status Quo der KMU-Finanzierung in Europa dargelegt. Die Finanzierung von KMU in Europa ist sehr heterogen. Einerseits sind KMU als Gruppe keine homogene Gruppe, da Kleinstunternehmen (< 10 Mitarbeiter), kleine (10–49 Mitarbeiter) und mittlere (50–249 Mitarbeiter) Unternehmen sich nicht nur in ihren Charakteristiken unterscheiden, sondern auch unterschiedliche Finanzierungsmöglichkeiten und -bedürfnisse besitzen. Andererseits existieren Länderunterschiede in der Finanzierung von KMU in Europa. Die Ergebnisse dieser beiden Studien (Kapitel 2 und 3), die auf einer Umfrage der Europäischen Zentralbank und der Europäischen Kommission ("SAFE survey") beruhen, verdeutlichen dies: KMU in Europa verwenden unterschiedliche Finanzierungsmuster und nutzen Finanzierungsmuster komplementär oder substitutiv zueinander. Die verschiedenen Finanzierungsmuster sind wiederum gekennzeichnet durch firmen-, produkt-, und länderspezifische Charakteristika, aber auch durch makroökonomische Variablen (z. B. Inflationsraten). In Kapitel 3 der Dissertation werden gezielt die Unterschiede zwischen der Finanzierung von Kleinstunternehmen im Vergleich zu kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen untersucht. Während kleine und mittlere Unternehmen eine Vielzahl an verschiedenen Finanzierungsinstrumenten parallel zueinander nutzen (z. B. subventionierte Bankkredite parallel zu Banken-, Überziehungs- und Lieferantenkrediten), greifen Kleinstunternehmen auf wenige Instrumente gleichzeitig zurück (insbesondere kurzfristiges Fremdkapital). Folglich finanzieren sich Kleinstunternehmen entweder intern oder über Überziehungskredite. Die Ergebnisse der Dissertation zeigen somit, dass die Finanzierung der KMU nicht homogen ist. Insbesondere Kleinstunternehmen sollten als eine eigenständige Gruppe innerhalb der KMU mit charakteristischen Finanzierungsmustern behandelt werden. Innovative Firmen und Start-Ups gelten als wichtiger Motor für die Entwicklung der regionalen Wirtschaft. Auch sie werden in der akademischen Literatur häufig mit Finanzierungsschwierigkeiten in Verbindung gebracht, die das Wachstum und Überleben dieser Unternehmen erschwert. Der zweite Teil der Dissertation beinhaltet daher zwei empirische Studien zu dieser Thematik. Zunächst werden in Kapitel 4 in einer ersten Studie die regionalen und firmenspezifischen Faktoren untersucht, die den Output des geistigen Eigentums erhöhen. Insbesondere regionale Faktoren wurden bisher unzureichend untersucht, welche jedoch speziell für die politischen Entscheidungsträger von besonderer Relevanz sind. Die Ergebnisse dieser Studie zeigen, dass der Erhalt von Venture Capital neben der Firmengröße einen signifikanten Einfluss auf die Höhe des geistigen Eigentums haben. Zwar spielen technische Universitäten keine Rolle bezüglich des Outputs, jedoch zeigt sich ein signifikant positiver Effekt der Studentenrate auf den jeweiligen Output des geistigen Eigentums. Basierend auf diesen Ergebnissen wird in einer zweiten Studie gezielt auf das Finanzierungsinstrument Venture Capital eingegangen und zwischen verschiedenen VC Typen unterschieden: staatliche, unabhängige und Corporate Venture Capital Firmen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass insbesondere Regionen mit einem Angebot an qualifiziertem Humankapital staatliche Venture Capital Investitionen anziehen. Des Weiteren investieren insbesondere Corporate und staatliche Venture Capital Firmen vermehrt in ländliche Regionen. Als neues Finanzierungsinstrument für besonders innovative Unternehmer hat sich das "Initial Coin Offering (ICO)" in den letzten Jahren herauskristallisiert, womit sich Kapitel 5 näher beschäftigt. Mithilfe einer Zeitreihenanalyse werden Marktzyklen von ICO Kampagnen, bitcoin und Ether Preisen analysiert. Die Ergebnisse dieser Studie zeigen, dass vergangene ICOs die folgenden ICOs positiv beeinflussen. Zudem haben ICOs einen negativen Einfluss auf die Kryptowährungen Bitcoin und Ether, wohingegen sich der Preis des bitcoin positiv auf den Preis des Ethers auswirkt.
The article discusses current approaches to determining the legal status of cryptocurrencies in order to create effective mechanisms of economic and legal support for their use in Ukraine. Attention is drawn to such a necessary factor as cooperation in the digital sphere between the state, individuals, and groups in the context of the «digital interdependence» paradigm, which was formulated at the #EuroDig2019 UN Digital Interdependence Report. The process of transformation of existing approaches to defining the economic and legal nature of cryptocurrencies by leading countries and international financial regulators is analyzed. The advantages and disadvantages of using cryptocurrencies have been systematized, as well as the genesis of such cryptocurrency as Bitcoin. It is determined that cryptocurrency is a new stage after the first electronic money, as well as the main advantages of its use, namely: instantaneous speed of payments (from a few seconds to several minutes); absence of transaction commission; anonymity of calculations; irreversibility of payments; no need to convert to the currency of the country of production of payments, a high degree of security of operations. The previous attempts of public authorities in Ukraine to establish a legal regime for the cryptocurrency market by adopting relevant regulatory legal acts in this area are analyzed. The ways of optimization of the legislation on cryptocurrencies in Ukraine are proposed in order to significantly enhance the innovative component of the Ukrainian economy and create competitive advantages for economic entities ; В статье рассмотрены актуальные подходы к определению правового статуса криптовалют с целью создания эффективных механизмов хозяйственно-правового обеспечения их использования в Украине. The Blockchain technology that revolutionized the world was launched in 2008 with the publication of the paper undertitled 'Bitcoin: A Peer-to-peer Electronic Cash System', by the enigmatic pseudonym of Satoshi Nakamoto, which described a version of electronic cash that allowed online payments to be directly made from one party to another. Succeeding the ground-breaking transformation that was carried out, cryptocurrencies commenced to shift the monetary system to a predominantly digital one, more adapted to the reality of a fast, technological, audacious and computerized world, interconnected by the largest and worldwide network ever seen. Behind this ingenious structure comes the concept of Blockchain, Virtual Currencies and Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), innovative and high-tech tools of security and storage that aim to reduce mistakes, frauds and costs. Decentralization, transparency and immutability are the three pillars that allow the safekeeping of private relations in order to generate confidence, reduction of finance transaction costs as well as reinforce any and all public relations involved. On the other hand, these revolutionary novelties follow an unregulated social pattern, fostering an unbridled advance by generating vast uncertainties, diversity and asymmetries. In order to reduce its vulnerabilities, these technologies are in most need of a financial and tax regulatory effort to align them under a uniform concept, as well its main characteristics and aptitudes. Beyond the legislative and conceptual approach, the challenges of a digital era and the financial revolution lead the world to innovative methods to solve issues that have arisen. The Blockchain, DLT and Virtual Currencies provide transformation and key answers that might contribute to efficient, scientific and solid solutions in real-time to governmental activities, specially tax administrations. Mit der Blockchain - und allgemein mit Distributed-Ledger-Technologien (DLT) - werden große Erwartungen verknüpft, die Prozesse der digitalen Welt des 21. Jahrhunderts neu zu organisieren, effizienter zu gestalten und bislang ungekannte Möglichkeiten für Transaktionen zwischen Beteiligten in Wirtschaft, Gesellschaft und Verwaltung zu ermöglichen. Diese Chancen müssen genutzt werden. Gleichzeitig ist mit der Blockchain-Technologie wie mit allen anderen digitalen Lösungen die Herausforderung verbunden, die Technologien, Anwendungen und zugrundeliegenden Infrastrukturen nachhaltig zu gestalten und an Energieeffizienz, Klimaschutz und Ressourcenschonung auszurichten. Handlungsbedarf besteht auch bei Blockchain-Anwendungen. Der Energieverbrauch des derzeit größten Blockchain-Netzwerks Bitcoin wird auf bis über 130 TWh/Jahr abgeschätzt, womit eine Größenordnung in Höhe des gesamten Jahresstrombedarfs von Ländern wie Argentinien erreicht würde. Blockchain-Anwendungen sind somit schon heute umweltpolitisch relevante Einflussgrößen und die zu erwartende Wachstumsdynamik erhöht den Handlungsdruck. Es ist das Ziel dieser Kurzstudie, geeignete Nachhaltigkeitskriterien zur Bewertung der Energieverbräuche und Umweltwirkungen von Blockchain-Anwendungen zu identifizieren sowie ein erstes Konzept für deren Implementierung bei der Umsetzung und Vergabe staatlich geförderter oder initiierter Projekte vorzuschlagen.

Social media has become an outlet for extremists to fundraise and organize. While governments deliberate on how to regulate, some social media companies have removed creators of offensive content —deplatforming. I estimate the effects of deplatforming on revenue and viewership, using variation in the timing of removals across two video-streaming companies — YouTube, and its far-right competitor, Bitchute. Being deplatformed on Youtube results in a 30% increase in weekly Bitcoin revenue and a 50% increase in viewership on Bitchute. This increase in Bitchute activity is less than that on YouTube, meaning that deplatforming works in decreasing a content creator's overall views and revenue.
Der " digitale Nachlass" ist komplex. Es existiert keine einheitliche Definition. Die Digitalisierung schafft in fast unermesslichem Ausmaß Möglichkeiten, im Ablebensfall digitale Spuren zu hinterlassen. Das vorliegende Werk befasst sich mit dem digitalen Nachlass und der Vererblichkeit von Daten, digitalen Inhalten und Informationen. Dabei legt der Autor stets ein Augenmerk auf die notarielle Praxis. Er zeigt auf, dass digitale Daten und Inhalte für Erben nicht mehr greifbar sein können, wenn der Verstorbene keine Vorsorge getroffen hat. Auch die Nutzungsbedingungen der Online-Anbieter sind oft nicht mit zwingenden Grundsätzen des österreichischen Erbrechts vereinbar. En la Novena Cumbre de las Américas, ha de proponerse por parte del país anfitrión la adopción del "Plan de Acción Interamericano sobre Gobernabilidad Democrática", el cual deberá ser discutido por los gobernantes allá presentes. Dicho plan conlleva las recomendaciones de sectores sociales salvadoreños, entre estas que los Estados respeten el derecho de acceso a la información pública, la libertad de expresión y de prensa, así como el compromiso de combatir el lavado de activos virtuales -como el bitcoin- etcétera. El Estado salvadoreño estará ante la disyuntiva de asumir este tipo de compromisos de manera pública.
AbstractThis essay makes the case that current debates about the 'moneyness' of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are occurring at the incorrect scale. Rather than being some form of transnational digital money to be used alongside or compete with national fiat currencies, I argue that, instead, each cryptocurrency represents its own self-contained 'money-world'. Put differently, a cryptocurrency is the uniquely specified unit of account and medium of exchange within the socio-technical bounds of its own blockchain. This new perspective can open new lines of intellectual dialogue and inform better policy choices for regulating cryptocurrencies.
Digital ledger teknologi kan enkelt automatisera Sverige som en jurisdiktion, inklusive automatisering av beskattning, och möjliggöra digitala regeringsval, säkra digitala nationella IDn, och en Svensk e-krona. Exakt vad som behövs för en Svensk digital ledger är en konsensus algoritm som ordnar ledgern under Svenska folkets kontroll, proof-of-vote, digitala motsvarigheten av representativ demokrati. Under proof-of-vote röstar Svenska medborgare fram validatorer, som sen följer motsvarande protokoll som i Bitcoin och Ethereum, e.g., konkurrerar om auktoritet utifrån konsensus algoritmen, Nakamoto konsensus, i proof-of-vote med dom folk-röster dom fått, motsvarande stake i proof-of-stake.
