Abstract
Forcefully dissents both from Perry Anderson's account of the historical facts and from its conceptual framework, casting doubt on the proposition that industrial capital in Britain has been subordinate to 'commercial' activity in a specifically English way. Concludes that our focus should in any case shift away from the 'peculiarities' of English development to the global crisis of which Britain is a not atypical part. (Abstract amended)
