Abstract

Due to increasing racism & ethnic violence in France, dialogue & conference building should be implemented to alleviate tensions between Muslim immigrants & the native French. Despite the Muslim community's peaceful history in France, recent political & social developments have contributed to ethnic, religious, & cultural hostility. Socioreligious issues, economic hardship, increased immigration, & France's foreign policy are triggering outbursts of violence. Additionally, France is succumbing to the Western fear of Islamic fundamentalism & is failing to distinguish Islamic terrorists from Islamic activists. In the global historical perspective, these developments are in accord with rising tensions in the Mediterranean region as the Arab population becomes more prominent. Policy guidelines are presented for avoiding conflict. 19 References. M. Grounds
