Abstract
NEWFOUNDLAND HAS SINCE THE MID-19TH CENTURY CREATED A DISTINCT SOCIETY THAT COULD NOT EASILY GIVE UP ITS INDEPENDENCE IN A WIDER COMMUNITY. THIS ARTICLE EXPLORES UNITY IN A COMMON CAUSE, REJECTION OF CONFEDERATION IN 1869, AND CONFEDERATION IN 1949. IT QUESTIONS WHETHER CONFEDERATION IS THE RIGHT STRATEGY AND EXPLORES THE DANGERS POSED FOR A SIMPLE RELIGIOUS COMMUNITY BEING ABSORBED INTO A LARGE MORE MATERIALISTIC ENTITY.
