Abstract

Tests the effects of war as an agent of social change by examining its impact on state building on a cross-sectional sample of 44 interstate and 19 civil wars from 1815-1954. Treats both war and state building as multidimensional phenomena that interact in a world of socioeconomic and institutional complexity rather than strict empirical isolation. (Abstract amended)
