Abstract

Summarizes four mechanisms of cultural transmission: vertical (parent to child), pressure of social groups (many transmitters to one recipient), horizontal (infectious-like, based on contact between an 'infectious' and a susceptible individual), and teacher or social leader to students or followers (one transmitter to many recipients), including as an extreme form, mass media.
