Abstract

This volume offers a scholarly contribution to the small, but growing literature on 'radical' or 'postfoundational' theories of democracy. It endeavours to both document and evaluate a productive, yet often neglected current in contemporary French political thought. It function to challenge the limits of the concept of democracy and help us to rethink its character, powers and broader social and political implications. Organising something of a unique triangulation, this study situates the projects of Jacques Rancière, Claude Lefort and Miguel Abensour not only in relation to one another, but with respect to the larger philosophical and historical question regarding the nature of democracy itself.
