Abstract

The American public seems to understand that vital US interests are not at stake in Central America, that the US can live with leftist governments, and that the resources now going to wage proxy wars and support repression would be better used for economic development at home and abroad. The public is looking for leadership that offers a decent policy consistent with American values, without committing American lives and resources. The task thus falls to the Democrats to escape from the Reagan traps and to redefine the agenda in a way that is keeping with the public's priorities
