WOMEN AND ARTS EDUCATION IN JAMMU AND KASHMIR: PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS

Abstract

Arts education plays a significant role in the development of society as well as nation. Arts education is classified into two main categories: visual arts and performing arts. Visual arts include drawing, paintings, sculpture etc. Performing arts includes music, theatre etc. Women are the back bone for the development of arts education as well as national development. Women are contributed more in arts education. Arts education is not as famous in India as it is famous in other states of the world. The reasons are many. The first objective of the paper is to study the problems faced by women in arts education. The second objective of the study is to study the remedial measures to overcome the problems faced by women in arts education. The main problems are as under: no government attention to arts education, no infrastructure facilities to arts education, less government jobs opportunities in arts education, less awareness programmes related to arts education, negative attitudes of parents towards arts education, no government arts institutions in Jammu and Kashmir union territory etc. This is a conceptual paper based on the reviews of various research papers, dissertations, theses, articles, newspapers, journals, university news and internet websites related to problems faced by women in arts education.
