Pollux Publishing
Pollux Publishing is a free hosting service for open access political science journals. We support you in launching or migrating your journal – from technical setup and visibility to long-term archiving.
This service is intended for political scientists at German universities and non-university research institutions. The journals are published under the Diamond Open Access model – which means there are no costs for either readers or authors.
We are launching our first journal, "Totalitarianism and Democracy. An International Journal for the Study of Dictatorship and Liberty" from the Hannah Arendt Institute for Research on Totalitarianism (HAIT) in the spring of 2027.

Publishing Software
With the Heidelberg hosting service “Open Journal System (OJS)” for Fachinformationsdienste (FID), we are leveraging the expertise in open access publication infrastructures that has been built up there over the years. Open Journal Systems (OJS) is a globally used open source software platform for academic journals, developed by the Public Knowledge Project (PKP). It supports both editorial work (submission, peer review, production) and the web-based presentation of your journal.
Admission Criteria
To be accepted by Pollux Publishing, a journal must meet the following requirements:
- Scientific Relevance: The journal focuses on political science. Interdisciplinary journals are welcome.
- Professional Representation: At least one political scientist with a Ph.D. serves as an editor, a member of the editorial staff, or on the journal’s scientific advisory or editorial board.
- Institutional Affiliation: At least one of the editors is affiliated with a university or a non-university research institution in Germany.
- Scientific Quality Assurance: Scientific articles published in the journal must undergo peer review procedures appropriate for the academic community. The editors, authors, and reviewers of journal articles are bound by the guidelines for ensuring good scientific practice issued by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
- Scientific Profile: The journal’s editorial focus must be clearly defined by distinct research fields, academic disciplines, or scholarly communities. This also includes interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research fields.
- Long-Term Outlook: Journals published by Pollux Publishing are published on an ongoing basis for an indefinite period, with at least five research articles per year. The journal’s continued publication is assured for the next three years.
