AbstractEpidemiological studies have consistently shown a positive association between size at birth (i.e. birth weight or birth length) and height in children, adolescents and adults. To examine whether this association is explained by genetic or nongenetic (intra-uterine) factors, we investigated birth weight, birth length and height in 60 dizygotic and 68 monozygotic adolescent twin pairs still living with their parents. Birth weight of the twins was obtained from their mothers. Height was measured in a standardised way. The mean age was 17±1.7 years for the dizygotic twins and 16±1.8 years for the monozygotic twins. Both dizygotic and monozygotic twins with the lowest birth weight from each pair had a height that was lower compared to their co-twins with the highest birth weight (dizygotic twins: 172.2±7.9 vs. 173.8±9.4 cm [p= 0.05]; monozygotic twins: 171.1±9.4 vs. 171.8±9.5 cm [p= 0.01]). Similarly, both dizygotic and monozygotic twins with the shortest birth length from each pair had a height that was lower compared to their co-twins with the longest birth length (dizygotic twins: 172.3±7.9 vs. 174.9±9.7 cm [p< 0.05]; monozygotic twins: 168.9±10.6 vs. 169.9±10.2 cm [p< 0.01]). In addition, intra-pair differences in birth weight and birth length were significantly associated with differences in height in both dizygotic twins (regression coefficient: 4.3 cm/kg [95% confidence interval: 1.0 to 7.5] and 0.96 cm/cm [0.17 to 1.74], respectively) and monozygotic twins (2.8 cm/kg [1.4 to 4.1] and 0.73 cm/cm [0.40 to 1.06], respectively). These associations were stronger in dizygotic than in monozygotic twins, but this difference was not statistically significant (for birth weightp= 0.4; and for birth lengthp= 0.6). However, genetic model fitting indicated that models incorporating a genetic source of the covariance gave a better description of the observed association of birth weight and length with height in later life than models not incorporating this genetic source. The results were similar for data on adult height after 12 years of follow-up in a subgroup of these twin pairs. These data suggest that the association between size at birth and height in later life is influenced by non-genetic intra-uterine and by genetic factors.

Compared toparticipants who recorded the fewest dynamic sitting minutes (Q1), those with more dynamic sittingminutes had a lower BMI (Q2=−1.39 (95%CI =−2.33;–0.46); Q3=−1.87 (−2.82;–0.92); Q4=−3.38 (−4.32;–2.45)), a smaller waist circumference (Q2=−2.95 (−5.44;–0.46); Q3=−3.47 (−6.01;–0.93); Q4=−8.21 (−10.72;–5.71)), and a lower odds for the metabolic syndrome (Q2= 0.74 [0.45;1.20] Q3= 0.58 [0.36;0.95]; Q4=0.36[0.22;0.59]). Our findings suggest that dynamic sitting might be identified using accelerometry and that thisbehaviour was associated with health. This might be important given the large amounts of time peoplespend sitting. Introduction: Sedentary time has been associated with detrimental health effects, so in some countries, guidelines to reduce sedentary time have been developed. As reducing sedentary time inevitably results in more nonsedentary time, effects of this reduction may depend on the activity with which it is replaced. Purpose: This study aimed to examine associations of theoretical reallocations of sedentary time to standing or stepping with cardiometabolic outcomes and type 2 diabetes. Methods: We included 2213 participants (51% men, mean +/- SD age = 60.0 +/- 8.1 yr) of the Maastricht Study who were asked to wear an accelerometer 24 h.d(-1) for a week. We calculated daily sedentary, standing, and stepping time. An isotemporal substitution modeling approach was applied to examine effects on waist circumference; body mass index; cholesterol, triacylglycerol, glucose, and insulin levels; metabolic syndrome; and type 2 diabetes. Results: Replacement of sedentary time (30 min.d(-1)) with stepping was associated with lower odds for metabolic syndrome (odds ratio [OR] = 0.72, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.66-0.78) and type 2 diabetes (OR = 0.79, 95% CI = 0.72-0.87), more favorable waist circumference (B = -1.42, 95% CI = -1.78 to -1.06), and body mass index (B = -0.48, 95% CI = -0.62 to -0.35) and improved cholesterol, triacylglycerol, glucose, and insulin levels. Replacing sedentary time with standing was associated with lower odds for metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes and favorable outcomes in waist circumference, cholesterol, triacylglycerol, and insulin levels. Conclusion: Theoretical replacements of sedentary time with nonsedentary time (both standing and stepping) were associated with lower odds for metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and beneficial metabolic outcomes. These results could be important for the general population, including those who cannot meet physical activity guidelines.
